Vendors and Keys

Hey all...

A total newbie here, just starting to work my way through the CK.

I asked this in another forum and it turned into an almost funny ****ing contest. Basically, has anyone found a way to create a vendor that sells keys? There are some work arounds, like having a dialogue where gold is taken, and a key added to the player's inventory, but at this point it's curiosity and frustration: Am I missing something obvious or is it really impossible to have a vendor simply sell a key....

As far as I can tell here is how things work: Every vendor is a member of a vendor/services faction, which faction has a specific container they sell from. In addition, said faction has a buy/sell list, which determines what items they can buy or sell.

That list is a form list, which list contains key words. For example, Urag in the College is a member of a vendor faction (ServicesWinterholdCollegeUrag) whose buy/sell list (VendorItemsCollegeUrag) contains only the following: vendoritemspelltome and vendoritembook. You can put what you want in his merchant container, and unless it has one of those keywords, Urog's not going to sell it. But put a newly made book in the right container, and it shows up in Urag's inventory as something the player can buy.

Keys come "naturally" with the keyword vendoritemkey. Generally, vendors set up to sell misc. items have a buy/sell list of "vendoritemsmisc." That list includes the key word "vendoritemkey". Makes sense then that you put a key in a merchant container which container is used by a faction set up to sell "vendoritemsmisc," they'd sell that key. Doesn't work.

Even setting up a custom key word on the newly made key, which word is used on a custom list, which list is used for the faction doesn't work. Niether does giving a key a keyword used in another formlist.

If anyone has tried to work through this and has any insights, it would be much appreciated.

@jet... Sounds like a reasonable work around. At this point it's more a curiosity thing. It was driving me batty that it's seemingly impossible to have a vendor just simply sell a key the way they sell anything else.

I want to say it's impossible, but my experience in the CK is limited. If anyone had figured out how to do it, I was curious as to what steps they took.
