Looking for war paint... painter

Howdy!

I'm still pretty new to the CK, but I've managed to create an NPC follower and place him in the game. Yay me! However, I was wondering if someone could help me out with making a warpaint for him. I'm looking for something like this:

http://images.wikia.com/forgottenrealms/images/5/56/Kivan.jpg

I'm an obsessive Baldur's Gate fangirl, and yes, I'm making a Kivan NPC for my character. Anyhoo, I have no idea how to make custom paint (nor how to add it in the mod, but I'm 62% positive that I can figure it out) and thought I'd give it a shot by posting here.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The video helped. I have created a crude warpaint that looks like what I'm looking for and I've managed to incorporate it into my game by replacing one of the uglier paints. However, it only shows up on the PC and not the NPC. Any suggestions? I've tried saving the new paint as an .esp like the video says, hoping it would override the one on the NPC, but no such luck.

Are you exporting your NPC's face gen data files after adding the war paint? If not, you need to make sure you've done all the facial & hair changes you will make to the character, save the plugin, highlight the actor record in the Object window but don't open it. Press Ctrl+F4, you should be asked about exporting the face gen data files, agree to do so. It will process and a small box that says done should pop up and go away.

To confirm it worked navigate to Skyrm > Data > Meshes > Actors > Character > facegendata > facegeom > yourmod.esp Inside that directory you should find an 8 digit alpha numeric number with the NIF extension. This is your NPCs head mesh and the number should match with the form ID number (minus the first 2 digits on the left) of your NPC as found in the Creation Kit. Also navigate and check in Skyrim > Data > Textures > Actors > Character > facegendata > facetint > yourmod.esp Inside that directory you'll find a DDS file and a TGA file with the same ID number. The TGA file can be ignored. The DDS file is what will be used.

You may wish to double check the DDS file and make sure that it indeed has the proper colors in place. Sometimes the Creation Kit exports the colors poorly and it needs to be rebuilt by hand.

Another option is to try the NPC Editor program available in the Utilities section of Skyrim Nexus. I myself couldn't get it to work but many people have been able to with varied amounts of success.
