nostrar
Hey folks! You might remember me from a while ago asking for help in getting Skyrim to run with STEP installed, well I did (with some help!) and have gotten my fill, for now, of Skyrim. I'm currently in a "phase" where I'm looking into underrepresented genres of gaming, this seemed like a good place to gather more connections and feedback on it. I've recently been curious about role-playing online. First hand reaction you get when I tell people I'm looking into role-play... well, let's just say it seems to be a hard sell. Hear me out though. Have you ever played GTA? Good.Imagine an online GTA where people own houses, arranges "street racing" with in-game money betting, where some players plays cops and scouts the city for races or illegal activities, and so forth. More or less an alive city with people playing for different factions, goals and ideals. I got convinced to play on such a server, it took me a few days to get into the flow but once I understood the approach... it was most probably the best gaming experience I've had. It felt like an interactive digital movie.Unfortunately that place shut down and I'm now looking for more like-minded people or interesting projects on role-play. Are there any suggestions, ideas or people playing currently on role-playing games?Imagine Skyrim like that? Too bad our only hope for something similar right now seems to be Elder Scrolls Online, though on that note...I've been getting some suggestions on World of Warcraft role-playing. This project looks very interesting but I have not tried it yet, anyone here playing WoW RP with more knowledge? Or do you have suggestions for other games/mediums? Check out their promo too:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7VACjQMXpkThanks!Don't kill me for liking nerdmanship. It's fun once you try.
nostrar
Already had a bit of chat about this on the STEP forums, and got ideas to check out NWN and servers for them, which I am doing, but thought I'd crosspost here and see if the larger Skyrim community got ideas for places to go RP! Preferably with at least a touch of similar atmosphere as the TES setting.

Vagrant0
Unfortunately the number of games out there where this sort of thing can happen is very small simply between the number of WoW MMO clones, the absence of emergent play from games other than EVE, and the tendency for most people to not really care for active, long-term, roleplay. What does exist usually only exists on the fringes of the normal gaming world (WoW, Startrek Online, Champions Online, ect) on "roleplaying" servers where 9/10 people are regular asshats, on Second Life (and similar) where most of the roleplaying involves adult situations or standing around staring at eachother awkwardly (unless you head to some of the far reaches of the grid, and then just have to deal with griefers, off-theme wanderers, and others), or NWN or Minecraft, which is a little low graphic, or on some MUDs or other text-based environments. Most actual game-like environments though tend to fail or fall apart primarily because you have people who slip into OOC constantly, don't care for the lore, try to control everything, or people who just want to create drama or ruin it all because they can. Of those, unfortunately Second Life or Minecraft is probably your best bet, as long as you can find the right group of people and the right combination of themes. Second Life however very quickly slides into adult themes (and X-rated potentially taboo themes) once you slip away from the usual clubbing scene. NWN is there too, but is slowly going the way of Ultima Online RP shards. Unfortunately you don't see much else simply because these things are usually only there because of individual efforts to mod or otherwise create that content due to the fact that few companies are willing to spend the money to develop things for a minority.
