AK 74 AK 74M

While I like fancy guns almost as much as the next guy, I just don't see what the difference is between a 74, 74m, and a 74u. They look like the exact same gun, just one of those there has some synthetic furniture instead of wood.

My point being, why not just use the 74u that exists and rename it?

You pretty much answered your own question between the 74 and 74m: That synthetic stock. Some people prefer that over wood.

As for why the 74u over the 74/74m, the 74u is a shortened version of the 74. So it's actually smaller than the 74. Some people don't like the compact look of the 74u. Not to mention that technically the 74u is actually "weaker" than the 74 due to the shorter barrel.

In any case, the Millenia just finished the 74 so it won't be long till it's released:

Huh, ok. Well thank you for clearing that up, actually. Seems kind of a pointless difference. I think the synthetic stock looks bad in the Fallout world, but that's my opinion.

On a mostly unrelated note, I sure do wish Millenia would go back to finishing the WRP project instead of all these look-a-like real world guns.

AK-74 was the replacement for the AK-47.
AK-74M is the modernized AK-74. Mostly with more synthetic parts.
AKS-74 is the AK-74 with a folding stock.
AKS-74u is the carbine variant of the AKS-74.

It's mostly slow upgrades / sidegrades to a single platform. It makes sense when you realize that the weapon needs of a generic soldier are different from the needs of a spec-ops fellow and those needs are different those of somebody sitting in a tank. But it's expensive to make a bunch of wildly different guns when you can just modify the old one.

As noted by becauseofreasons, there are legit reasons for why there would be different models of a gun due to different purposes and usages.

As for the WRP project, considering how much is still left in the project and the fact that at the end of the day you're still fixing someone else's work rather than you creating your own work and enjoying that process, it's no surprise that Millenia would not go and retexture all of the weapons in the game.
