jaysus Posted January 10, 2009 Share Posted January 10, 2009 i may rant a bit in here plz dont take me serious then :P ------------------------------------- yesterday i decided to check the bethblog out of boredom and to my surprise most mods they feature they got from fileplanetwell i wrote em and asked why and they denied it telling me they do feature nexus occasionally... well lets believe it...but since i got aware that really alot of people only use fileplanet i decided to host some of my mods there again...BIG MISTAKE!!! i hosted one there in the past and it even netted in a magazine feature... but i started to grow a hatred towards this site due to its annoying advertisements, spyware and whatnot... so i retreated from that sin pool well i thought that changed after 2 yearsand well again i was wrong... so lets compare the two pages... planet: uploading:your descriptions get totally distorted you have NO "one look" info on your files statistics ratinganyone can rate, i rated for my own mods of course giving them a 10you need no comment to rate... thus i got devastating 5 scores by now (dont ask me why... i simply dont know) page layout:heck what? planet has no layout... every frame looks different apart from the dozens of advertisements littering the place... i needed customer support just to find the fricking button to change my settings usernamesi registered back in the half life 1 days and yet upon returning i wasnt allowed to use my old username again... i had to change it???? WTF???? file of the month:its a bloody joke... after i gave my files a rating of ten and was the first to rate i was the top notch file fo the month... obviously others couldnt stand it and derated my mods not for quality it seems but to get back in the top ten... moderation?dunno ---------------------- nexus: uploading:a status bar during uploadlots of info can be added and its not getting distortedone look interface to get your files statistics; icluding views, download, comments and ratings rating;must post a reasoncan reportyou see who ratedrates are usually fair due to the report feature one is allowed to use if the rating reason is bs layout: simple yet effective... i never got loststill has ads but they dont make my surfing experience suffer usernames:seems i still have mine :P file of the month:seperate voting system for file of the month resulted in no way to manipulate it as easy and actually made only mods appear that really were liked... moderation:awesome... love you guys :P --------------------------------- well there is probably more to itlike for example the support planet receives from all kinds of gaming companies and developers... they were nice back during half life 1 or quake 1 but soon after became a plain advertisement, unnavigatable, biased and totally sick imo...also i didnt see any really good mod being released there in the last few years... sure some host em here and there but those going for planet cause they like the place are definately smaller in number than my income...and as i see it the talent is here on Nexus... every looked at the planet forums? apart from a horrid layout there just aint any interesting nor valid or even creative post... look what we have here... so basicly why do i write this?well kick fileplanets ass whereever you can and let em fall off their high horse... its crap and sane people should notice... all hail the nexus! if you think i write that cause i got bad rating youre partly right... got sick of planet during upload yet but the ratings toppled it... should i post that on planet too? would they care? I can't recall) that were patches and utils for Icewind Dale, but that's been it. Regardless of corporate sponsorship, Nexus gives plenty-good results in d/l speed, has knowledgeable people who can help with specific problems, and serves as a social outlet as-well. Can't say that about fileplanet, now, can we? Bethsoft is making a mistake by not referencing Nexus more often, but then again, their discretion does keep the dilettantes away; the only way somebody finds the Nexus is with a bit of searching... the casual surfer will miss us... not necessarily a bad thing, y'know? TheTerminator2004 Posted January 10, 2009 Share Posted January 10, 2009 I have to say, I've never had any problems with Fileplanet... the ads dont get in the way too much, and I dont usually have any trouble reading the information for a file; in fact there are a variety of great mods hosted there, which simply cant be hosted at the Nexus at all, due to the size limit - mods like QTP etc. While theres no denying, TESNexus is a far superior site, that doesnt make Fileplanet a bad one. It was the only place I could find with a decent variety of NWN mods, for example, and I've found it helpful for other games too... whereas TESNexus only provides files for a couple of games. jaysus Posted January 10, 2009 Author Share Posted January 10, 2009 oh ya i totally forgot the d/l and surf speed issue...but youre right... planet and these other ad drive companies are utterly slow... prolly to force us to buy premium memberships or somin, most of the time im just waiting for a bunch of ads to load till i can see a page lol... had a talk with someone from the bethstaff called just "me" (or im unable to decipher my mails correctly) who said he usually scanned only planet cause its easier to surf and find top mods... after some reasoning he promised to check here more often :) which i truly appreciate... i wouldnt have a problem with a bunch of mainstream users joining here... we have such awesome moderators i really cant complain much... idiots go quicker than they come :) and to my knowledge most people are reasonable anyway as long as theyre not in a group @terminatorits not just the adds necessarily but also all those unrelated pictures everyhwere and the "inside"ads like links to other planets - the layout is just horriblefile size here was recently raised to 150mb if im correct and planet needs u to contact the mods to get files up larger than 24mbits true planet offers more support to a variety of games but once you searched abit for those games u usually end up with better pages than planeti wish nexus would also support other games but thats a workload which would need sufficent funding and much more staff... something i think is not needed atm and would maybe even drive nexus to its own doom... selling out never made anything better... as i said in the beginning (during Quake/HL1 times) i liked planet... but that changed quicker than i thought is possible Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

LHammonds Posted January 12, 2009 Share Posted January 12, 2009 It should be noted that even if you love TESNexus to death, modders should feel the need to host their files at other places as well. You never know if TESNexus will be here next year and just think what would happen if it disappeared. Remember the the silence when TESSource.net went dark? I recommend to modders to host their mods at multiple locations and file mirrors for this very reason as well as DL speeds and uptime/availability issues. If you upload a mod to TESNexus, upload it to PES as well and list a couple extra pure file mirrors such as MediaFire and 4Shared. If the day comes when the Nexus goes under and I am still modding, all of my mods will still be able to be found elsewhere. I do have some Nexus exclusives (on purpose) but I have everything necessary to host elsewhere the next day if the need arises. jaysus Posted January 19, 2009 Author Share Posted January 19, 2009 i wouldnt advise anyone to use fileplanet tho... somin that sprang to my eyes recently was the possibility that they manipulate the rankings...all files that are in that top list can be rated for and show an immediate effect in the rating number, xcept for one...enclave commander, i dont wanna implicate that the author is resposible tho, but this mod has a rating of 9.8 since weeks... which i found strange and just to test it i gave it a rating starting with 8... then 5... then 1...(you can change your rating) = no effect... it stays at 9.8...just do the math - there are 25 votes... lets assume everyone except me votes with 10 (unlikely) that would be 24x10 + 1x1 = 241 divided by 25 = 9.64 but not 9.8strange is it? (i voted with 1 when it was still at 22 votes btw) i like the fact that they introduce new mods with a personel statement and was rather flattered that i got a nice statement but nevertheless that rating thing irks me... also am i quite unpleased with the fact that there is close to no user support... im still waiting for an answer on how to delete my mods from this place... ill prolly have to replace em with blank textfiles... the description bug they seem to have fixed resulting in my by now html coded descriptions now being filled with code blocks the users there are kinda unpleasant aswell... i got bad ratings cause they were too bloody retarded to download from planet or cause they use an xbox... ya my fault sure... and its not like here that you could report such a crap its afterall not part of their TOS to rate with sanity...
