Quest Markers/Items in the wrong place? How to fix with console.

tl;dr- There was a bug where the quest marker for The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller was in Proudspire Manor. I used console command to advance the quest, but it became a dead-end later. I fixed it by noclipping into the void.

 

This morning I fired up a relatively new playthrough, with lots of mods. I'm still early on so I went on foot from Rorikstead to Solitude, and stopped at Ustengrav to do the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller quest on the way. (I did not have my quest marker on).

 

I got to the end of Ustengrav and the altar with the note from Delphine was nowhere to be found. (Sorry, I didn't want to go through the dungeon again to get a screenshot). No biggie, I just advanced the quest and added the note to my inventory with the console.

 

This got me into trouble, but here's the console commands in case that's what you googled to get here:

About six hours of playtime later, my travels brought me to Riverwood, where I detoured to meat with Delphine. But, even though my quest showed that she was my next item:

and Delphine aggresively did not have the "attic room" dialogue option.

Seemed like I was stuck, and after about 2 hours of frantic googling, I was about to resign myself to going back all those hours, or sacrifice the main questline. Or rage quit and play Breath of the Wild. But I decided to investigate a bit. I loaded the morning's save and checked the quest marker:

That's odd. Why would the note be in Solitude? I made my way there and found the quest marker pointing me to Proudspire Manor.

I used the console to teleport in, since I didn't own the place.

The quest marker showed that it was off in the distance, far beyond the boundaries of the manor. Here you can see it is roughly south-southwest of the ground floor entrance. Also here's a photobomb of Lydia doing what she loves-being in the effin way.

I turned on noclip and left Lydia in the bed/bath, and headed into the great beyond.

If you run into this specific problem, here is the direction I went.

It took me about five minutes of running in that direction before I saw something in the distance.

I was well outside of viewing range of the manor, so I was careful to run in a straight direction. I can't tell if I ended up moving vertically during this time, though I don't think I did more than a little.

Picked up the note and the quest advanced. I tried loading my most recent save, and did the same thing. I had marked my direction pretty clearly so I was able to make the journey into the void again without the quest marker. Picking up the note (and reading it) allowed me to ask Delphine about the attic room.

 

That's my story. It was incredibly frustrating to think about having to start over, especially so early in a playthrough where so much progress can be made in a short time, so I'm hoping if someone runs into a similar problem this helps!

 

I have no idea which mod caused the altar to manifest itself in the between place. Since I have a solution, and since I use my gaming pc on the couch with a controller (which means getting a list of mods to copy/paste is difficult) I'm not going to include that unless someone thinks that might help them troubleshoot their own problem

If you don't mind a bit of work, return to this altar in the void, open the console and get its ID number. Then load ALL active plugins in SSEEdit and search for the ID number. See what mods have edited it.

Probably the only way to fix it.

 

Unfortunately, you can't change questmarkers with the console. There are no console commands for this. What you can do is advance or even complete quests with the console. I wouldn't recommend it though. You can bork your save that way...
