Tolkien27
I just started playing the game and was on my way to Whiterun. At first I coudn't get in because there was no guard in front of the gate. Through a little trick I managed to enter Whiterun but it didn't load correctly. There are only a few doors and people floating and walking in the air. I can move around and open the doors. When I do that I get into the houses, which are loaded correctly. I tried leaving and closing the game and coming back. I also tried fast traveling to Whiterun. Nothing worked. What can I do? (Unfortunately I have no photos yet. I'll try to post some later.) wfandrews
Depends on how you tried to get in. You must enter through the gate or the town of Whiterun will not load properly. Go up to the gate, enter the console, click on the gate, type "unlock:" without the quotes, hit enter, exit the console and the gate will be unlocked. The guard has been missing for me before and this is the way I got in. As far as I know this will not affect the rest of your game play, unlike many console commands which should not be used unless you know what you are doing. I entered by punshing a guard and then I was thrown into prison. Then I walked out of Dragonsreach and saw the desaster. After I officially discovered Whiterun by glitching my way through the not correctly loaded city to the gate and back out, I went through the gate several times and it still didn't load correctly. I started a new game today hoping the problem would go away. It didn't. And by exploring the world I discovered that not only Whiterun, but also Bleak Falls Barrow is not loaded correctly. There is just a door floating in the air. Is there any chance I could fix that?

The guard is only needed after Alduin appears.
wfandrews
As far as I know you must have the guard open the gate for you. With alternate start you just have more dialog choices with the guard. From what the OP says his problem is more than just a missing guard if Bleak Falls Barrow is also borked. I would start with a vanilla game, no mods except for the unofficial patch, Play through to Whiterun and see if the problem persists. Uninstalling the game and reinstalling does you no good as it leaves hundreds of files behind. Go to the Skyrim forum on Steam and open the pinned topic "Helpful Links and References" by smr1957 and scroll down to "Resetting Skyrim to vanilla or A Clean Reinstall" and follow that guide. From the sound of it you may have a mod conflict. Do you have any mods installed?
