MehunesJack
Why, out of all the things, are they used as replacement for money. I mean, I can understand not using old money since the money printing machine is probably destroyed but still. Why can't we just barter?
jaosals42
Well, I mean in a wasteland like this I'm pretty sure people are constantly cheating and fighting each other over items, so caps are used for currency. And either way, I can't really think of anything else that's abundant that could be used for money, unless you like trading burned twigs.
omgwtf666
because you cant make fake caps :) they actually tell you that...
Xtreme_energy
It does seem strange to fight over bottle caps, So you have people running round after the nuka - cola However personally when I see something I want I shoot the owner and get and instant discount But A BRILLIANT thing to do is go into the console select a person who has some good thing on the like Lucas simms type the word kill into the consol and when they are dead steal their stuff the go into the consol again and type resurrect and they will come back to life with all their stuff on them you can repeat tia over and over again to get loads of guns and ammo for you player
grumbler
Why, out of all the things, are they used as replacement for money. I mean, I can understand not using old money since the money printing machine is probably destroyed but still. Why can't we just barter? "Money" is just the name we use for something that has little intrinsic value but which (1) is cheap to store/doesn't deteriorate (2) has a widely recognized and fairly uniform (even if artificial) value, and (3) cannot be readily imitated. Bottlecaps are fairly lightweight (though I'd hate to lug around a thousand of them!), available in enough numbers to make fine gradations of pricing possible, and no longer manufactured. Barter has a hige transaction cost - you have to find someone who wants what you have and has what you want, or else you have to do some complex intermediate trades to walk away with what you want having gotten rid of what you had to spare. Money of any sort makes transactions infinitely easier. They were kind of a joke in Fallout, and in fallout 2 the NPCs mock the idea that their ancestors used such a stupid form of money, but they are a fun idea. Plastic poker chips would be an infinitely better form of currency, but they make too much sense and so aren't as funny as bottle caps. Remember, the whole game series is to be approached tongue in cheek. It isn't supposed to make logical sense.
Skotte
I could see poker chips being more used where gambling would've been more prevalent but caps imo would more widespread. aside from beer caps there isn't a reasonable means means of counterfeiting caps
Circuitous
How would beer caps be considered counterfeiting? They're still caps.
Skotte
How would beer caps be considered counterfeiting? They're still caps. Uh...they're not Nuka Cola caps
Circuitous
They're still caps. Just like most places will blindly accept Canadian nickels. They're close enough to nickels that anyone you give them to will accept them. That's the ENTIRE POINT of currency - its value is determined based on whether or not other people will accept it. But, more to the point, it doesn't say "Nuka-Cola Caps." It says "Caps." :D
grumbler
Actually, it is "bottle caps." Any kind would probably do. I don't recall anything in the canon that said only Nuka-Cola caps were acceptable.
