ruvuk
. . . the Legion or the Stormcloaks or the Companions . . . I've passed level 50 in the game. I made an effort to catch up with most of my Quests, which was great. But now I find myself looking for things to do--you know, stuff like finding books for Urag in the Arcanaeum. Before, the Quests (all sizes) seemed to come at me from all directions, but now the game seems really quiet. I haven't gotten a new major Quest for quite a while . . . I haven't joined any of the groups gearing up for the civil war, and now I'm wondering if maybe the game is waiting for me to pick one. Earlier, I was thinking that I'd like to just help defend Whiterun as a citizen of Whiterun or something like that. Also, I don't know if this matters, but I haven't bought any of the Player's Houses. (I'm still living in a cave; until just recently, I was too busy to worry with a house.) Maybe the game is waiting for me to buy a house? I'd really appreciate it if you guys could let me kmow if I'll be able to fight in the civil war w/o joining a group and/or buy a house. And, if I need to join a group, will the Companions get into the fight as much as the Legion and the Stormcloaks? Tx.
Mewness
Unfortunately I don't think there's any way for the civil war to progress without the player taking sides. (Pity. I rather like the idea of just defending Whiterun.) I don't think it's necessary to own a house in order to finish the quest line, though. I've only played through the civil war quest sequence once (on the Imperial side). I don't remember the Companions doing anything during the Whiterun battle (and I think I was harbinger at the time). I could be wrong, though.
IsharaMeradin
The Companions have nothing to do with the Civil War. In fact, they hide themselves inside Jorvaskr during the battle for Whiterun. The Civil War battles will never take place unless you pick a side and go thru the quests. So if you have done pretty much everything else, then yes the game is waiting for you to make a decision. As far as buying a house, that is extra fluff to spend gold on. The game will go on if you don't buy any houses.
tnu
If the Companions wer ean option I would very much side iwht them. It beats the Empire and Stormcloaks.
Deleted5388374User
Would've been nice if we could toss the Thalmor Dossiers* on the table during Season Unending, call out both sides for playing right into the Thalmor's hands, and either help them work together or bow out of the civil war altogether. *Presumably after we kick out Elewen, though it'd be fun to see her reaction. :P Edited April 14, 2013 by Guest
ruvuk
Thank you guys for the posts--the info will really help me a lot. I'm genuinely surprised that the Companions sit out the war--at least the part where Whiterun is under attack--maybe somebody needs to burn down their too-comfortable hall? <lol> I'll join the Legion. It's tiresome, but Ulfric has turned out to be such pompous ass and such a silly bigot that it's gotten pretty hard for me to like him anymore. (Earlier in the game, I was impressed by the fact that he shouted down the High King. Other than the Graybeards, I think Ulfric is the only other living person I've encountered who can voice a Thu'um, so I was wondering if there might be more to his story than what had been told. Plus, the Nords from Skyrim's history who could voice the Thu'ums were all great heros.) Got to run . . . got to get ready to do a good job with the fighting . . . thanks! Anska
If you are doing the "No stone unturned" quest, I'm afraid you'll have to buy one of the houses to finish it, because one of the stones is hidden in a player-home.
ruvuk
@Anska: Tx for the note. . . . I haven't gotten the "No Stone Unturned" quest yet. . . . (Maybe the game is waiting for me to buy a house b4 offering that quest?) . . . Originally, I just assumed that I'd want to do all of the quests, but I've changed my mind about that . . . The quest that requires you to lead somebody to the pillar and then kill them with the Sacrifice knife was a total dud for me when I realized that the game wasn't going to allow an option that would work for me--no way was I going to sacrifice anybody for some asshole god's approval . . . I think I was supposed to get a special knife to keep--like that was supposed to make the sacrifice part worthwhile?? . . . There was another quest in Riften where I was supposed to play the heavy for the crew in the Thieves Guild (I think); no idea why either the Guild mutts or the game developers thought I'd do that . . . I think I have 3 quests that I'm not going to do and maybe 6 or so misc. quests that I'm not sure will ever get done . . . I wonder if one of those Hearthfire houses will count for the "No Stone" quest? . . . I'd really like building my own house (I think) . . . <lol> . . . my cave with 2 containers and a sleeping bag has its advantages . . .
MightyZ0G
actually you can get that stone without buying the house if you pick pocket the key. if you don't want to know who has the key, don't click the spoiler the fletcher in solitude has the key to proudspire the Heartfire houses are ok but can take a long time to build.I do like having my own bard playing instrumental music in my manor house Edited April 14, 2013 by mighty zog
Anska
You get "No Stone Unturned" once you pick up one of those shiny little pink gems floating above a little golden box, there's more than one of them and any of them can trigger the quest. In the end you'll have to collect all of them all anyway. It's one specific house, I just didn't want to spoiler you too much. From what I have read, you might not exactly be on speaking terms with the person you have to give them to though... The game is thought of as a rpg because the choices of your character don't necessarily have to reflect your own opinion on the matter. While you wouldn't help the Thieves Guild, I am sure you can think of a character who would. Most of the daedric quests seem to be a bit about the idea that power corrupts too, you can either do something really bad in order to get a powerful magical artifact or you keep your integrity and get nothing - but a new friend perhaps. But apart from that, I can understand you, because there are some quests that I don't do because I (and my characters) don't feel comfortable with them either. The one for which you are supposed to sacrifice a follower counts among them. @zog: cool, I didn't know that. I thought you had to buy and furnish a part of it. The possibilities of this...
