Thor.
Hello there is a new article stating that the ps4 will indeed use directx 11 for games in general, instead of opengl, because there was allot of debating going on that is directx open source, its seems like it is. Especially when they are using a modified off the shelf hardware. So what do you think about this upgrade. Also i have another feeling that sense every console thats next gen will be using Blu ray drives, do you think the pc market will follow suit, or you will be assimilated, resistance is futile sort of thing. I would make sense, sense games will never stop getting bigger and bigger, the capacity of blu ray is quite large to, 32gb or 50gb sizes.http://www.geek.com/games/sony-iimprove-directx-11-for-the-ps4-blu-ray-1544364/ let the debate begin, looks like there was one already started on the comment thread   quote from comment threadNo, they won't be using DirectX 11 directly on the PS4 (Sony most likely uses OpenGL)... but the feature set will be compatible with DX11 (and improved on) from what they're saying (so developing for and porting between PC and PS4 will be easy).Makes sense????? Still we honestly we don't know, they could be using directx 11???? they have Physx and its a Nvidia thing.http://www.examiner.com/article/ps4-gains-support-from-nvidia-with-physx-and-apex-technology I should of put question marks after the title lol Edited April 14, 2013 by Thor. RitualBlack
I would prefer OpenGL to DirectX but I am sure people can argue either way. Valve had higher frame rates in their games when running off Linux+OpenGL instead of DirectX, but that was dx9 so I don't know how newer versions of OpenGL or DX11 would compete. Older games never seem to have any problems when done in OpenGL though. As for the blu-ray player: with services like netflix and internet speeds as fast as google fiber slowly becoming available I can see discs vanishing. Movie rental stores are already suffering from it (which, on a side note, is really too bad. I enjoy picking up a movie rental)
JimboUK
I thought the runtimes were proprietary, anyway OpenGL is faster and just as capable. I doubt they'll want to license something from Microsoft when there is a perfectly viable alternative.
Thor.
Here is a complete list of what's new with opengl 4.3  http://www.opengl.org/documentation/current_version/ and you can download the directx sdk, so it is open source http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=6812 Edited April 24, 2013 by Thor. JimboUK
The SDK is but I'm sure the runtimes aren't.
