Installing question

Technically, no. The game can't handle it.

But there is a fairly easy way to fake the game out and basically accomplish the same thing.

Install Fallout New Vegas, then copy the Fallout New Vegas folder somewhere (the one from Steam). Now you have a clean install saved somewhere with no mods that you can easily get back to. Copy your FalloutNV folder in your Documents\my games\ folder as well. Save it in a folder so that you know which copy goes with which Fallout game folder.

Now install all of the mods that you want, play around with different configurations, etc. When you have a setup that you like, copy that folder somewhere else as well, and also copy your FalloutNV folder in Documents\my games\ to go with it. Put these both in folders (or maybe a single folder) with a name on it that you can remember so you know which ones go together. Export your mod list from whatever mod manager that you are using, and save that with these other folders.

Now that you have everything copied safely away somewhere, delete your Fallout New Vegas folder and copy over the original Fallout New Vegas folder that you saved, do the same thing with the folder in Documents, and remove all mods from your mod manager (depending on what mod manager you are using you might need to do this step first). Now install a different set of mods, whatever you like. Again, when you get a stable setup that you like, copy over your Fallout New Vegas folder to somewhere safe, preferably in a different folder name so that you remember which version is which, and also copy your Documents and export your mod list again.

Now you can easily switch between these two versions by removing the current version and copying your folders from wherever you are keeping these backup copies, then import the mod list that goes along with that copy back into your mod manager.

If you have a lot of mods this may end up using up a lot of disk space, but most computers these days have plenty of disk space so no biggie.

I probably have about a dozen different versions of FNV saved on my computer.
