SirFrank114
Years ago, when Oblivion first came out, I played it, vanilla, with no major problems. Then I added OOO and several other mods. Enjoyed the mods but some problems developed such as crash upon exit and the blackening of the upper LH quadrant of my desktop screen. That was using Windows XP.Now, I've got a new computer, using Windows 7. The same old problems are now returning as I put more and more time on the game. I've done most of the suggested things, such as putting Oblivion in its own Game file, not the Programs file and turning off all automatic saves. I'm using the Nexus Mod Manager and have only 2 large mods and 10 smaller ones. Because I'm an epic player, I have more than 600 hours of real time invested. I've used the animation fixer 2 or 3 times as problems develop. On a technical level, I'm a 2 out of 10. To me, it appears that my computer's memory can not keep up with the ever accumulating data of an epic game. Can anyone in that 9 or 10 technical range give me a suggestion that won't take 10 hours of reprograming my computer?PS: I keep my active game file to no more than 55 saved games, +55 OBSE files. I just reloaded an old save, less than 100 hours. It loaded all the mods I currently have with no problem and I had no problems in reloading a game. However, If I reload from a more recent save game, its crashvill. Again, it must be file size. Edited April 15, 2013 by Sir Frank
Hickory
It's not your computer, it's you marathon saves. Oblivion was never designed (the save game format, to be precise) for 600+ hours of game play. As you are experiencing, the longer you play, the more junk clogs up or otherwise maims the save file. Using methods to reset the Abomb timer is a band-aid at best. It's a harsh reality, but that's what you have to live with when you play for extended periods, as you do. SirFrank114
I may, repeat: "MAY" have found an answer to my problem. While trying different loads I started to change some of my mods by turning them off, ( The NMM makes this very simple ) . While getting some inconclusive results I got the error message " NMM has quit working" . I restarted it and things worked without any problems, I then went back to the mod manager to reinstall the ones I had turned off. Again, everything seemed to be working until I tried a reload in game. Major crash to desktop! Next step was back to the mod manager which had stopped working again. This time I did not remove any mods from my selection list. Restarted the game and everything seems to be working great! No crashes what so ever. Not sure why my MM crashed but if its working so is my game. I think if I check out the MM before starting the game, I may avoid some crashes. As to the hours on the game: Five years ago when I had a similar problem, I had some people tell me that they had well over a 1000 hours on a game with no problems. Let me know if you have mega hours with/without problems. I'm sure Bethesda did not design the game for over 200 hours. But then again, they won't support you if you are using Windows 7/8 either!I'll update this line if it continues to work. Thanks for your help. Oromish
Hm, a few things here: 1. Don't use NMM for oblivion, use wrye bash. 2. How large are your current save games? 3. Do NOT overwrite your save games, make completely new ones, and never use quicksave, overwriting the same file might, and with many mods WILL cause corruption eventually. 4. Do not reload from ingame, due to the engine, it will not rerun certain scripts as intended and will also cause corruption over a long period of time, or leave certain mods barely functional. So basically, if you want to reload, quit the game, start it up again.5. Out of curiousity, what's your current load order? TheRomans
I have run a game for over 2000 hours, about 220 mods running, another about 150 mods played and unloaded, save size around 23MB, using Just OBMM rather than the more sophisticated wrye-bash and Bain. It is still running fine. I have had to go back to older save a few time when a mod mangled the data or save and I could not continue after it was unloaded. I have had to clear corrupted spawn point or other objects in a cell 3 times. I have twice had to go back a few save when the saveline was otherwise corrupted. With better game hygiene that my limited skill can apply, I suspect you could play a game almost indefinitely. Pay particular attention to #3 and #4 in the post above. SirFrank114
I thought there were some long hour players out there. My current Save file is just over 6 meg and I do not use quick save or overwrite any saved games. I also do not have any auto saves active. My game still crashes from time to time if I try reloading from within the game. If I save now and then exit, I'm no longer CTD ( Crashing to Desktop ) ( An abbreviation I have seen but had to figure out what it was).I have about 10 mods along with 10 plug ins. Therefore, I'm still not too complicated. I am trying to sell off much of my extensive inventory as I probably have over 10,000 items in over 100 chests, closets, barrels, ect. Much of it being in the Armory mod. ( A very large storage facility )I'm still interested in those of you that have over a 1000 hours in one game and still manage to keep it from crashing. Currently, I'm playing the Lost Spires ( The newest version ). I tend to play those epic mods such as OOO, TNOTN Revelation, and TLS. I have about 5 more of those Mega Mods that I haven't loaded yet but this isn't the forum for commentary. So far, so good. Thanks for your suggestions and when I have 2 or 3 people recommending the same thing, I may try it.
