Hello there

I was searching around online just now just for fun to try and find a multiplayer mod for the game... I found a forum where some guys had supposedly developed one, and were using it online, but I somehow doubt they're being truthful about it. Only about 4 of the people were using it, and kept going on about people coming and messing them up from rival clans online, and how they can't give these other guys a password to get it from some IRC channel or something. Just for the simplest little reasons. *blabber blabber blabber*

Point is - it isn't really possible to make a multiplayer morrowind with the existing engine, since it relies on the use of "cells"

These cells are each a part of the area you are currently standing in in the game world - and every area, which is of a square shape btw, can only contain so many of those cells. The game uses updates of your current location in a cell, which is then referenced to a grid of sorts, so that triggers may work, or creatures may respond or just about anything for that matter.

Now, when the game updates the information, it has to send X/Y/Z information, your current weapon/spell status - which if either is drawn, your current line of sigth towards creatures/NPCs in the area - millions of itty-bitty little things.

This is the first problem for playing online - the use of the cells.

Next. Every time you enter a new 'area' as mentioned before, the game has to do an update of your location in X cell and which cell you are moving into, and send information to the 8, read that number EIGHT neighbouring areas so that any creatures that may have been attacking you just outside that area may continue following you even after it's been loading. That's again too much information to be processed for multiplayer, let alone online playing.

Next.

People can and will cheat. There will be bums exploiting every little bug they can in the game, simply because it's there and it makes the playing experience easier for themselves - regardless of how much it screws everything over for everyone else.

Example, go to Vivec, and then goto the Telvanni canton. Now go into the middle area, and into the vaults. You should find at even level 20 that it is very easy to take out all the guards and the storm atronachs and then loot the several hundred thousand gold worth of stuff. Because the guards don't respawn withing 24 hours.

Because they're weak compared to what you could become. Because you could even go through with just the little amulet you get from the pond when the woman tries to take you up the backside.

That'd piss me the hell off, if I had to go to loot the place, only to find that someone else was already there and did it before I could. Now you've got some guy with 400,000 odd gold running about, getting himself Azura's star, killing some golden saints and ascended sleepers - getting those permanent enchantments on the daedric armor he lifted off the old, very much old, dark elf wizard in Tel watever.

There are far too many issues to address, and as was said before, you would need to effectively rewrite the entire game code to do so. An idea I personally had, is if it were possible, revamping the Quake3 engine to such a degree that it is capable of running the entire land of Vvardenfel in one massive load. Even the Serious Sam engine might've been able to pull it off. If you could do that, you could have the interior and exterior cells combined. You could have all the different areas combined, which gets rid of the effect of someone getting stuck in mid air as they jump into the next area.

A simple list of things that would even everything out in any kind of Morrowind Multiplayer:

Every single one of the characters, apart from plain villagers, is controlled by a human. Right down to shopkeepers. As a result, you could lift something from a shopkeeper simply because he wasn't paying attention, instead of just using your chameleon ring or the amulet.

Because everyone is controlled by humans, guards also become human - and naturally everyone gets bored with their shift, so they'd switch. This could mean the new guard is a might bit weaker than the last, or you could do something while they're talking to eachother - behind their backs.

People hide their things all over the show - and someone else happens to find one of those hiding places - you could lose tons of stuff in one foul swoop.

You get a bank system, where everyone's money is deposited, and works like any real bank. People might decide to rob a bank - which may suceed, but will result in people being hired to guard the place.

Someone might go in under an alternate identity as a guard, and eventually end up using that to steal even more money from the bank.

The list of things you could do if the game were an MMORPG are virtually endless. But again, they aren't about to happen. :bye:

Someday we'll all have superfast computers - faster than any supercomputer today. We'll also be using nerve connections to our games, which means we are really engaging in those sword fights, and have to block/slash accordingly. We'll also be able to run only as fast as we normally could, and terrain would have at least 10% real physics. You might not be able to jump off a building just because you're afraid of hights, never mind your health meter flashing invulnerable in the corner of your mind.

However, until such a time comes - it's best to only >DREAM< about such things - not try and get people to actually do it for you just so you can have fun.

Well anyway - My name is SibSpi everyone, and I'm your newest member :)

This was added to a long-dead thread (like a year dead). The poster apologises as having posted before reading the rules, being a newbie.

So we'll be kind and move you to newbies where people will (or may) welcome you with words of wisdom and general insanity.

Have fun, chill and don't eat all of the strawberry jam!

Welcome to the forums Sgt. Sausage, have fun and don't spam :P

Well, I couldn't possibly read through all that but it certainly looks like you've done your homework. Basically it's not possible with the current engine... and recoding it would take years. Plus it would be illegal. Anyways let's keep away from that subject as it's been discussed to death many times already. ;)
