Memory Leak Issues

Recommended Posts

I have been having a consitent memory leak all day.

I have the 4GB Patcher from RoyBattarian. I am using the memory allocation of nvse. I have used the FNV BSA Decompressor. I have xNVSE. I have NVAC. I have New Vegas Tick Fix. I have JIP LN. I have JohnnyGuitar. I have FNV Mod Limit Fix.

The memory leak always occurs in the courtyard outside the belltower in Salida del Sol North in Dead Money.

Here is the NVAC log that was generated...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your load order is a mess. Nothing is to load between any of the base game or DLC .esm files. Pre-order packs are to load after the DLCs.

You should also remove any plugins that are not active.

Just in case the above (good!) advice does not resolve the issue, here are some more general things to try.

* The game has "memory leaks", primarily linked to the audio system due to the version of the Ogg Vorbis Libraries used by Bethesda. Getting 2-3 hours before a CTD is pretty good. The audio problem is fixed by using the updated "Ogg Vorbis Libraries" posted by Kane Wright. You might also want to try using the tool "CleanMem", which periodically (you can set the interval; default is every 15 minutes) tells the OS to perform it's built-in "clean up" of memory. It has a "mini-monitor" that displays memory usage. Doesn't seem to hurt and might help.

* If you are using the full 4GB of memory, most likely your CTD problem (now or in the future) is the default "heap size" is too small. It's so common you might as well deal with it now. Please see the 'Issue: CTD without warning, "Out of Memory error", or stops responding after the Main Menu') entry in the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

* You can also get "out of memory" errors from the graphics system (which is separate from exhausting system memory), even with the game 4GB enabled. The video pipeline is known to have "memory leaks", and these occur faster with "beautification mods". Here the cause is a combination of larger image sizes ("higher resolutions", aka "hi-rez"), hi-rez texture packs for skin, hair, clothes, weapons, and landscape; along with mods that increase the number of NPCs in a given cell. (All those hi-rez texture "personal accessories" get multiplied by the number of Actors.) Please see the wiki "Display resolution versus Image Size" article. While "ENBoost" can help, you may need to switch to lower resolution/ smaller sized images or even lower quality in your game graphics configuration.

Please see the 'Vanilla Load Order' entry in the 'First Timer Advice' section; as well as the 'Towards Game Stability' and the 'Common Game Problems' sections of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.

If the problem persists, then work through either the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' or the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' sections in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

I recommend anyone read the entire "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article to understand the differences between this game and others you may have experience with; especially if this is your first attempt to play a modded FNV or it's been more than a year since you last set it up. It is designed for someone who has never played a modded PC game before, so it tries to avoid making any assumptions, is kept "up-to-date", and covers years of "lessons learned" by a retired Technical Support expert. It is NOT a list of various mods to install that happen to work on the author's machine; only "the essentials". It addresses fundamentals underlying how to get the basic game and mods to work together. At least 90% of everything I post in the "Technical Support" sub-forum is already in that article. Once you can play a test game to at least Primm, only then should you try adding other mods from some other "guide".

Wow I think I'm having the same issue in the exact same area just outside the Salida del Sol belltower. I've been trying to debug what is causing the issue and getting consistent crashes where if I keep walking up the steps which lead to the path to the belltower ladder I will sooner or later freeze and crash or consistently fall through the landscape of either the staircase or rubble piles at the top which then results in a crash. Game has been perfectly stable up till then. Tried turning off all my plugins to isolate the one responsible but it didn't seem to make a difference. Just happens faster with my full load order.

Did you by any chance "clean" ANY of the game DLCs, but DM in particular? If so, that can cause such a problem and you will have to start over after "verifying local files" because it has corrupted your saved games.

Cleaning any mods in this game is generally regarded as a "bad idea" (author responsibility) but doing so to the published DLCs is a guaranteed game breaker.

"Disabling" mods does not necessarily restore the original files, especially if they "overwrote" existing files. If you have the disk space, maintaining a "virgin install" copy of the game for testing in situations like this is recommended. Just keep it in a separate folder and rename the folder as needed.

Funny you mention this bug. I just happened to have the exact same issue recently in Campanas Del Sol, the bell tower area. Not the rest of Salida Del Sol but specifically Campanas Del Sol. No issues at all with my mods up until this point. https://gfycat.com/unfitfrigiddarklingbeetle In this video, I literally just loaded a game. 30 seconds in, I fall through the ground (sometimes it only takes a short 3 seconds, but it always happens without fail). I exit to main menu, try to load any game, then game crashes. To add, a few times the corpses of the ghost people start spaghettifying to the extreme while flying into the sky before I fall underground.

Anyway, I figured out that disabling NVTF - New Vegas Tick Fix highly reduces the frequency of these memory leaks at the bell tower. YMMV. Though it still happened to me once with NVTF disabled but only when I was trying to run around the place for like maybe 3 minutes to see if it would happen again. Still, you can do what I did by turning the mod off, completing the bell tower Gala Event, then getting the hell out of dodge and turning it back on afterwards.

Just for more details, I also tried this on a fresh save with every mod disabled except NVTF(tested with 9.9.1c & 9.9.1h+performance ini), OneTweak, and NVSE. With NVTF enabled, the bugginess started a few minutes in. With NVTF disabled, I ran around for a few minutes without any bugs at all. However, this doesn't really pinpoint NVTF as the culprit since as I mentioned before, it happened once with the mod disabled. All this testing has really told me is that there's some memory leak issues in Campanas Del Sol, and NVTF is strongly contributing to it. And looking through your load order, the only things I have in common with you there are YUP, Ragdolls, and JAM. Considering the ghost people turning into spaghetti, my gut is going with the first two (though I tried disabling these mods too, without success).
