Weird, timed CTD? Help!

Hi all,

 

I'm experiencing a very weird CTD. So far the game has been working flawlessly, but now it crashes, as far as I can tell, when it reaches a certain amount of time played.

 

I took an earlier save and played it until it roughly reached the same amount of time played as the earlier crash. And it just goes CTD without any warning, different locations. The game is unplayable now!! :(

 

I'm not a very experienced user so I don't know where to start with the debugging... I would very much like to try and save myself the trouble of a full reinstall and starting up a new character.

Doesnt look like mod conflict, your Papyrus is pretty clean, something in the game is suppose to happen @ that time but doesnt :S

Are you doing a specific quest when it happens perhaps?

It's a fairly new character, level 21, I was just exploring around Falkreath and Whiterun, I haven't been farther. The first time it started crashing, it happened while in Knifepoint Ridge. The second time, I took a different area to explore, so now it happens at the Sleeping Tree Camp.

 

It's so frustrating! And I'm clueless...

Crashes that are time related often are caused by automatic processes/services (like autoscans, autoupdates from antivirus programs, etc.), or related to hardware issues like overheating, memory.

You might check to make sure you have disabled your processes/services, put your av in gamemode, etc.

Also, have you checked your VRAM/RAM use and temps in game?

How do I check the VRAM / RAM use and what are the temps? I have a pretty decent computer, I don't think it eats up the memory, but of course, I'm willing to check it, maybe it is related.

Well, depending on your video card, you can use whatever you use to adjust your video card settings for checking your VRAM usage and temps (temperatures). You can find your RAM usage in the task manager of Windows. If you play in windowed mode you can check these while playing. You can also use something like Riva Tuner, or CPU-Z. Even if you are unable to get them to superimpose their info onto the game (I have never been successful with this) you can have them set up logs that you can see after exiting the game. The STEP guide has a good explanation of how to benchmark your game, and links to the programs I mentioned. Actually, the whole guide is really amazing, even if you don't follow it religiously. The main cause of high temperatures is dust. You may benefit from blowing your computer out with some canned air. All it takes is a barely perceptible layer of dust to negatively affect performance and increase the chance of static charges causing chaos.

 

Also, you didn't mention--are you using something to turn off background apps/processes/services? Gamebooster is popular, though I prefer to do this manually. If you are not, then the problem could simply be something like your antivirus kicking in an auto-update or something like that.

I usually don't use anything to turn off processes, but I have tried it now (I have Zone Alarm that has a game mode), but the crashes are still there. I will look at the guide and see what I can come up with, thank you.

 

Just in case, my comp: Intel Core i5-3570 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660.

Just to clarify a bit, it took from a certain save to crash a playing time of about an hour - the first time when I first encountered the problem and the second time when I took a different route of playing... Afterwards it just crashes, when I load the saves close to the crashing time. That's why I don't think it has anything to do with the computer's performance... :((((

Hello, first of all I´m not english speaker, so I apollogice for my kickass english. Well, are you using Wire Bash? This mod manager detects

conflicts between mods and aware you from mods that has missing .esm or .esp. And I think yoru mod list is a bit huge. My game crashes

when using hi-res txtpack and other hi-res mods, but my computer is an abbacus. Your computer must be a monster to carry wit this mod list. Try to clean repetitive mods (hair, etc...) I wish you good luck.

So far I have only relied on NMM. I know it has some issues, but it worked for me. I will try to install Wrye Bash and see if it detects some major conflicts. Thanks!
