The Trouble with the stupid DLC

Satansoft (sorry Microsoft) are nazi bastards, forcing ppl to install there crappy live software that's probably just spyware anyways.

I'm no fan of MS either. That means privatly, I like it for work, Windows Server 2003 actally makes sense, but privatly, I hate my WinXP home which is one reason why I will change to Ubuntu once the ATI/Crossfire drivers support it.

However, I think that if ppl wouldn't download DLCs and games illigally, MS wouldn't come up with something like WinLIVE in the 1st place!

I payed for it,didnt work...found another 'way' and it works!

Some positive things:

1)The whole concept of fighting in a simulator is pretty original.

2)Most of it is nicely done, the scenery, the buildings etc.

3)Gauss..

4)Gauss..

5)Did i mention the Gauss rifle?

Some negative things:

1)no massive 'battlefield slaughtering of millons of soldiers',but something that plays and looks like a Medal of honor expansion pack.

2)

You get to shoot at a tank, and it fires at your mate who seems totally indestructable..

3)Too much of the same,destoy this,kill that...

4)Too short

5)Not really a war, just some special forces missions.

6)Where's Prime?

7)No vertibirds dropping soldiers around the battlefield.

8 )

HQ is 100 yards away from all hostile locations, you walk around a bend and voila! there it is!

Good thing about using it as a mod,i got the winter armor now!and the winter t51b too!

One thing i observed,as soon as i got my items from the storage room everybody turned hostile on the women that says you can come back..i left the area as soon as i could cause it usually makes them go back to relax mode again...just odd..

Overall i give it a 6 out of 10...and these are my final words on it..it could have been so much more, but it simply isnt.

It was just a little sidestep..

Making a dlc available trough MS Live was ,well a not so good idea..

Now that we found a way to make it work i can see the future..they will release it in an even more and complex way which is doomed allready..

so my plea to Bethesda is PLEASE dont change the way we have to download it,or install it!!We are more than capable of doing that ourselves, just dont ruin it again!!

Just make the content available and ignore everybody and everything like you do now.....

Is the DLC moddable? If so, that might make it a worthwhile purchase (aside from the actual content).

I for one haven't bought the DLC yet, but I might if it can be modded.

Yes it's moddable (you just need to move the files from the Xlive folder to your Data folder and activate the OA .esm in the GECK and it'll act like any other master file).

Bah. I pirated all of the Oblivion DLC. I might do the same here, if the opinions of competent gamers (Read:Normal forum folks, not review gurus on Fileplanet) flame it too much.

Piracy and the discussion of such is not welcome here.

Goodbye.

Well, after reading a few atricles about how impossibly hard it was just to get the MSPoints and WinLive set up for XP and downloading, I've taken the plunge and am currently in the middle of getting the 'Operation: Anchorage' DLC.

It was suprisingly easy, though WinLive and their "help" pages actually slowed me down.

Being from the U.S., and not able to get to a local retailer (and seriously NOT wanting to have to wait for a purchased card to come in the mail for an online purchase... I mean, order something online to dowload something else, but still have to wait for snailmail to arrive to be able to complete said download? Come on.) I was able to easily get my points through the Zune network (which was linked right through the MSPoints help site, though not directly on the page where the FAQ is explaining where to purchase them online...

1. www.GamesforWindows.com search for 'microsoft points' led to http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Live/...ace-points.aspx... thereby finding a link at the bottom of the text which goes to...

2. http://points.microsoft.com/userportal/About.aspx Rather than actually reading the supposedly helpful info there as to how to purchase points online (the hinted-at place to go is really a red herring... gallery.live.com has NOTHING to do with being able to purchase microsoft points), click the [buy] tab at the top of the center window space, which leads to...

3. http://points.microsoft.com/UserPortal/Buy...Portal/Buy.aspx Where you find out that online credit card purchases can only be made though the Zune network, or you can go out and buy from a local retailer in your area. The link on that page is for the Zune Account Management website.

note: Zune and WindowsLive are interlinked if you use the same account name on each. If you have one, you might as well sign up for the other, just don't d/l and use the Zune Software if you don't like snooping. (It isn't needed for purchasing Zune Points, and they openly state that it uses Web Analytics software to track your online activity.)

4. Set up the Zune account, click [Finish], and click [My Account] at the top-right of the screen to find the [buy Zune Points] link at the top of the new page.

Bonus: Zune Points come in the lowest increment of 400... so complete 2x transactions, and you have 800points, exactly... no having to leave 200points unused on your account... and "save" yourself $2.50

5. Now, back to WindowsLive and proceed with login and the rest...

(The XP update isn't much of an issue, though having them link you to the MSSupport page is just idiotic. A straightforward d/l page would mean people that have never dealt with MSSupport wouldn't get lost in translating the page to find the [Download This To Get It To Work] link... But, we're talking about MS, here... ::sigh::)

If this is helpful, then I've done my part... now I just get to pray that I remember to update FO3 before installing the DLC... I knew I forgot a step in my haste... Heheheheh.

*edit*

Link went haywire... hopefully fixed, now.

Hey, I paid for my copy of Fallout 3... But there's no way in hell I'm getting into that Windows LIVE crap.

I'm with ya brother. I shelled out my hard earned cash for the PC *AND* XBox360 games... c'mon Msoft and Bethsoft, throw me a frigging bone. $100 bucks isn't enough?!

I'm just hoping the mod community will come up with some awesome content that equals the size and scope of the DLC. That will make it money well spent.

AND... the WindowsLive was a TOTAL pain to install/update/reboot/install another update/restart... then have to start over since something in that process KILLED my saved games. Nice. Thanks.

A bit of looking around led me to find out that save games aren't dead...

1) Use FOMM to reset the 'fallout3.esm' back to the top of the load order after patching (and put the 'Operation:Anchorage' file directly below it)

2) WindowsLive savegames are made in a new subfolder, so you just have to copy the savegame you want to take into the expansion over to that subfolder. And, if you want to skip over the whole logging in riggamarole to be able to play your game wihtout having to be on LIVE (say if someone wants to play on the x360 at the same time...) you can do the same shift in files for the DLC, itself.

Pulled from the PlanetFallout 'Operation: Anchorage' FAQ:

How can I use my saves offline?

If you're logged into Games for Windows Live, you'll notice that you have to log in every time you wish to load a saved game, as they are associated with your account. However, there is a fix that allows you to use these saves offline. Go to your Fallout 3 save folder. The default path is My Documents/My Games/Fallout3/Saves. From there, you should see another folder that has the same name as your Games for Windows Live Gamertag. It will contain your saved files. Just copy them into the /Saves/ folder, and you should be good to go.

How can I play the DLC without connecting to GFW Live?

Like Fallout 3 GFW Live saves, you'll need to move the DLC data to a different folder if you wish to play the DLC without connecting to Live. If you're using Windows Vista, the DLC files can be found in C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC, with [username] replaced with your Windows username, and in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Xlive\DLC on Windows XP. Just copy the files there into your \Fallout 3\Data folder and you should be able to play Operation Anchorage without GFW Live, assuming you have the Anchorage Data Files enabled when you launch the game.

*moderators: if there is an issue with this link, or excerpt, please feel free to snip it. (I know some message boards don't prefer this sort of linking/quoting)

I know I'll be going this route, myself... as I really don't like having an offline s/p game being inexplicably linked to needing to be online for no real reason. ('Achievements' mean nothing... I mean, really, if you just play the game all the way through, you'd do 3/4 of the listed achievements, anyways. And what use is it for bragging rights? "Hey, look... I actually played the game I bought... Cool, huh?")

6)Where's Prime?

7)No vertibirds dropping soldiers around the battlefield.

I guess you didn't see them, cause there were actually a couple places where vertibirds dropped off soldiers. As for Prime... that's a good question. I didn't even think about that. Wasn't that thing supposed to be there at the battle?

To answer the question about Liberty Prime...

No he wasn't there.

The intention was that he WAS going to be sent there, but by then they had the more practical power armour, and he took too long to build anyways. Anyways, imagine the difficulty of transporting a forty foot tall robot by plane and then mustering up the enormous amount of power needed to power him for thirty minutes in the field.
