Now my question:I used a spray paint brush to make the texture a bit darker to better suit my own taste yet when i look at it ingame it is very shiney but the original texture was not.What did i do? is it something fallout is doing? (note: i used the sponge brush type to darken the texture if it's relevant) i am new to the GIMP and texture editing so please help me. :smile: Thanks to any who replies! Chrophiss Posted May 11, 2013 Author Share Posted May 11, 2013 (edited) I would like to make a small change to this as i tried another way to make the armor darker, i found the colorisation tool now and it's like i want it now except for the shine/oily effect, so i know the brush type doesnt have anything to do with it. I have read on several sites and tutorials about how the alpha channel controls transparancy and gloss/shine but i can't figure out what option does that, so far my tinkering and experimenting have been in vain. Also i saw several forums posts about this aswell but they talk about a normal texture with the ***_n.dds at the end and i am using the one provided in the mod itself yet the shine is still very apparant, like i'm a big walking mirror or something. Any help or tips would be very much appreciated! EDIT: I have found something that maybe a solution but i dont know how to continue from here.I created a texture set for my adjusted textures and than applied to the model through the GECK, for some reason the armor is shiny the clothing underneath is not. However when i completely replace the .dds file with my texture (giving it the original name) the model is exactly what is is supposed to be, alot less shine and just perfect! But i don't want to replace the entire armor. I want to keep the original and my retex at the same time in the same way. Any idea on how to approach this? BarefootWarrior Posted May 12, 2013 Share Posted May 12, 2013 Posting a screenshot of your texture would be a big help on this one. From what I am reading, you have 're-textured' an exisiting armor in the game, right? And it appears shiny in game once you apply it, using the same file name or default name. This is fine, but you don't say anythng about your normals map. If you 'modify' an exsisting texture, you really can't rely on the default normals map for your modified texture, you need to create a new normals map to go with it. You have the following files for textures. mytexture.dds or the diffuse mapmytexture.dds_n or the normals map These two work together, and the normals map will control 'shine' on a texture once in game. Been there done that and at first this drove me nuts. I am some what familiar with GIMP. I can't remember if GIMP has a normals map plug in or not. Seems to me there was one available and you may want to look at that. I'll leave it at that for now and I hope this helps awnser your question. BarefootWarrior Posted May 12, 2013 Share Posted May 12, 2013 Here are a few links to get you started. This first one is using GIMP, but the guys voice is terrible. He also goes into some Blender stuff that you don't need right now, but for your purpose, the first part is pretty good. The other two links have good information and the last one goes into details on the 'shine' aspect of the normals map. The normals map gives your texture some 'depth', and also gives you a way to control 'shine' in your texture. The diffuse map (texture) and the normals map work together.
