Skyrim Crashing While Loading Saved Files

Recommended Posts

Anytime I try to load a saved file, Skyrim says "This save relies on content that is no longer available, continue?" I say yes (I recently deleted some mods, more on that later) I get to the moving mist with the game hint and the object on the left, that's there for about 6 seconds, and then the game crashes. I was in Elvenwood last time I created the saved file, which I recently deleted. I installed a lot of different Skyrim mods, but then my game would lag from time to time, so I uninstalled a few, and it would still lag. Then, I uninstalled ALL of them and that's when this problem started occurring. I have tried to uninstall and re-install the game, but I still have the same error. Any help?

Your save relies on content that is no longer available, like the message says.
Uninstalling the place that your character is, then trying to load the game is going to cause crashes. Now that you've uninstalled all of your mods, there is no way your save game is going to work.

You are going to have to start a new game. I suggest that before you do that, read the STEP Guide on reverting to Vanilla Skyrim, so you don't end up with bits of the old game causing problems for the new.

In your new game, if you want to avoid problems, play through on vanilla with no mods until after Helgen, then add one or two mods or other changes at a time, run BOSS (if you added mods) and play a bit to check stability before adding one or two more. Once you get a stable game with the mods you want, do not alter the game until you are tired of your character and are ready to start over. Also, disabling autosaves and quick save will minimize corrupt save problems.

Okay... Man, I'm such a moron. There goes 120+ hours of my life. Whatever, I guess it will be nice to start over, at least now I will know the right choice to make and what not. Thanks for your help, I don't plan on installing any future mods because I had such a terrible experience this time. Maybe I'll install the Crimson Blood mod, but that's about it.

You can always safely run Weather, Lighting and Texture mods, as well as weapons, armors, skins, skeletons, etc... they contribute a great deal to the experience... just take care with things that add stuff (buildings, quests, skills, etc) to the game... they have potential to break stuff if not used (uninstalled in this case) or created well.

Really the only thing you done wrong is uninstalling mods, particularly the mod in which your same game was placed. Which added key elements in your current save game. Save games remember everything... so the more you add/remove from them (mods) the higher the chance it breaks stuff.

It's fine to create a game, mess about with mods, try stuff, mess up twice or 3 times... and then start a real game and have what you wanna play with enabled and don't change things along the way (or at least don't take key elements out... mostly it's pretty save to add new stuff in as long as it's not a game overhaul in perk systems or skills...)

Don't be afraid, I think everyone has broken their game at least once who is using mods.

I try to queue up mods I want to use (usually about 10 - 15) and mods I want to remove. I then play my game until I am done with it, then I delete the save game.

Uninstall the mods you want to remove, and install the mods you've been wanting to use, and start a new game. Also make sure to use the Alternate Start - Live Another Life mod, as when you start the new game you shouldn't have any issues (being that you use BOSS, have a Wyre Patch and have cleaned the new mods with TES5Edit).

If you want to keep a game save, try not to uninstall / install too many game changing mods or it will eventually corrupt.

I had this same issue for a while and was banging my head trying to figure it out. I took the steps as follows:

1. In NMM I uninstalled by the utility itself and the MODs stay in the program utility. I reinstalled them selectively using NMM, Wrye-Bash and BOSS. I made sure going this route first.

2. I used two other utilities: TES5.Edit and TESVESS to clean the saves of whatever was wrong with the saves vs the MODs in the saves.

I had thought I was experiencing bloating due to Scripts, was not the issue.

I made a file folder outside of Skyrim for my game saves, mine was Gamesaves Females ONLY, then went into Skyrim where all of my saves are located C:\Users\(your computer name)\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves and transferred all of my saves and auto saves into my Gamesaves Females ONLY folder. I used TES5 and TESVESS on all of the saves to clean up the problem. I had already created a Bash file, which does help in the management of the game, MODs and saves.

Each time you uninstall a MOD, you must make sure to look at their description of the MOD for details you might leave out and is important.

I reinstall MODs according to their part in the game, like say clothing, armor, etc and don't skip about all over the game. Some are textures, animations, etc and have to be dealt with individually to make sure you don't go insane working on MODs.

If you downloaded a save - you may need all of the mods used in that save - It may work with some missing, and not with others not present. And may conflict with other mods you have outside of that downloaded save. The mods are not included in the save -YOU will still have to find, download and install each one, then get the load order working yourself.

What the save does is to reference the mods. So if there is a game changing mod included in the save, and you don't have that mod - when the game tries to load those game changing parts - they are not there and it crashes. Mods that add simple objects - such as weapons will probably not crash, but the weapon will not show if the mod is not already in your game. Cosmetic changes will likely not cause a crash, but you will see the vanilla faces. A custom race - if the race is not already included in a mod it will crash because that race does not exist in your game.

There might still be a way to save your progress

just load a save away from the place you uninstalled it might work...No promises tho
