Dj963
Ok, so I just got my new computer yesterday, and I ran into an issue while trying to play fallout 3. A little background first: I am running windows 8 64 bit on an brand new computer with 16 gb of ram. So here's the problem. I installed the game and it went fine. Then I went to open up the launcher and hit play. After pressing play The disc spins up, and it looks as if it were about to start, and then the launcher just comes back. This goes on and on no matter how many times I press play. I really love this game and I was so excited to finally play it and I can't so Im really desperate for a solution, SOMEONE HELP :(
BenWah
I wrote a guide for getting Fallout 3 working on Windows 8. Written for the steam version, but hopefully it will still help you with your CD version of the game. http://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/828937546147175081/

Should i download GFWL before the game? or the game install first?2. Yesterday when i was messing around I installed the game first, then GFWL, and it still was looping the launcher. 3.The reason i want to ask before trying, is because your guide seems set-up for crashes etc. and I have never even seen past the launcher window.EDIT: One last thing, I've never had GFWL before and after clicking download on the link you posted I end up with this small window for games for windows marketplace. Is this the right program? Or is windows live something different? Edited May 22, 2013 by Dj963

I then installed the game. I upldated with the patch 1.7. I ran the access enabler 4gb thing. I changed the busethread thing and added another line in my falloutprefs doc. and then I tried running and still no luck. Even when i tried to run in windowed it still just went straight back to the launcher. I NEED HELP I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME SO BADLY! Last note: my disc is GOTY and it comes with two discs I have been trying to play on only the game disc and not the dlc disc. But when i put the dlc disc in and i double click to run it it just freezes up. my computer just runs the disc continuously untill i like force it to stop or shut down. M48A5
What are the specifications for your CPU and GPU? Installing the second disc has become a problem after XP. After you have installed the first disc, you have to restart your computer in Safe Mod with networking. You can then install the second disc. Do not activate any mods or the DLC before you start a new game. Just start a game and play through until you exit the vault and make a hard save. At this point you can activate the DLC and any mods. The base game was made to run before there were any mods and before there were any DLCs. Sometimes the game will play fine and other times it will freeze during the opening scenes. Also, you changed the wrong Fallout.ini. The one you need to change should be in your Documents/My Games folder. Edited May 23, 2013 by M48A5

Download the tools from the securRom web site and use them before-attempting to play the game.then you download a fresh copy of the 1.7 Bethesda patch and install that, "AFTER" you install the dc's. what this will do is replace the badly maimed and now corrupted launcher your left with. then you can deal with GFWL and all the other neat things we are forced to do for a simple RPG game. Not so simple as it seems. If all else fails, download and install the Fake patch By JustinOther here on the nexus, the steam file even if you don't run steam, it will fix your game. search here for (fake).run the launcher after doing all of this in that order you should be fine unless you have an Intel chip-set that does not meet the system requirements for this game, there is a workaround for that here also.Kitty
Chazillah1
Hi Dj, I had the EXACT same issue as you, I installed FO3 GOTY on my laptop (which has an intel graphics card and a Nvidia one too). Both which I believe that the game could not recognise. Anyways, I downloaded this and the game actually starts instead of reloading the launcher over and over again. http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/17209/?tab=2&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D17209&pUp=1 This tricks the launcher into thinking you have a Nvidia 7000 series gfx card. Hope it goes well for you!

cdawg821
i know this is pretty old, but i have had the same issues as listed above, i tried to fix listed by chazillah1 among many other fixes and am still having the same problem. i have installed windows live gaming, i have tried the disabler for windows live gaming, i have tried the unnoficial patch listed on this site. i have added in the extra lines and changed the existing ones. i have tried every fix that i have seen on the web and am still having the exact same issue. i click play and the startup menu gets rebooted. incredibly aggrivating
