Star Wars: X-Wing / Tie Fighter

It is called Black Prophecy, however, I lost interest when I saw the abbreviation "MMO" in the description.

But back to X-Wing, there is a site called X-Wing Alliance Upgrade which is overhauling the models, textures and cockpits and looks VERY nice. The download page shows over 100 models as being complete.

Check out some of these from the screenshot page:

Well, I found out that X-Wing Alliance refuses to install on a Win7 64-bit OS.

After a bit of research, I found that you can create a new install CD that works with XP/Vista/Win7 64-bit by using a custom installer by Markus Egger. You copy the contents of your CDROM to a folder on your computer, replace the setup with the one on his site, then create a new ISO image and either mount or burn to install the game. (Instructions)

I used Folder2Iso to create a new ISO image and then mounted it with MagicDisc.

Once I was ready to fire it up, I then got the nasty notice that a joystick is REQUIRED and will not start without one. DoH! When I built my new PC, it did not have any joystick ports and thus, all my existing joysticks are now collecting dust. I looked for a USB joystick back then but did not find one I liked. A quick looks turns up a couple of possible low-cost, good-quality choices:

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick - 12 button

  • $30 USD
  • Windows 7 compatible
  • Programmable buttons
  • Problem: The "twist" axis tends to go off-center (recalibration or re-plugging in does not always correct it)

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick

  • $30 USD
  • Windows 7 compatible
  • Programmable buttons

I keep seeing reviews on Saiteks and how they break over time. I'm partial to the quality from the two manufactures I listed. I've also been burned by Microsoft way too many times to buy any hardware from them so they are also out. ;) I'm going to Best Buy at lunch to see what they have.

I ended up going with the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Works VERY nice for such an inexpensive joystick. Feels great.

XWA let me get into the game but dang the luck...my graphics was flaky. Craft disappearing, tearing in and out of existence. I will have to figure out what settings need to be tweaked.

  • 4 weeks later...

The posts in this thread have been taking me on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Yah, the good old days, boo the loss of space sims, yeah the resurgence, eep! problems with the remakes...!!

I love space sims, but I have a question on what Dark0ne said. Why doesn't Eve Online count?http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/confused.gif I don't know much about it, but it seems interesting. Is it so different or something, than the x-wing variety?

I think what Dark0ne meant about Eve Online is that it hasn't been neglected. It was one of the 1st MMO's I think and it is still going strong. From what I'm told, there are people playing in there since the beginning. It also isn't a game you buy, sit down and just start playing around and blowing things up. With careful planning, you "might" get some descent craft in a few months. And if you take a pot shot at a seemingly defenseless mining craft, be prepared to be hunted down ruthlessly by his coalition...to the point of not being able to undock your spaceship without being instantly exploded by bounty hunters because you have a bounty on your head. hehehe.
