Oblivion Freezing on Combat Start & End

Recommended Posts

As the title says I've been having some problems with Oblivion freezing for a second right when the combat starts and when it ends.

I've tried disabling and re-enabling all my mods and OBSE plugins but it didn't seem to have any effect. I'm also running Oblivion Stutter Remover but that also didn't seem to fix it.

Any ideas what could be the cause of this and are there any fixes for it?

Is it at the start of the battle music and then when the battle music ends and explore/town etc resumes? If so you could try disabling music in Oblivion.ini (change bMusicEnabled=1 to bMusicEnabled=0 in the [Audio Variables] section) and see if it stops the pause.

That actually fixed it, tho is there anyway to still keep the music on? Or will I have to play without music?

I'm going to guess and say you're playing on a machine (possibly laptop) that is using an onboard sound chip (Realtek is a common one, and one that I have a little experience with). Like all onboard solutions (another example in the Intel graphics on many laptops) it uses CPU and memory resources to do a lot of it's work. That takes away those CPU cycles and memory from the game engine, hence your pauses.

First thing to do is go into the Control Panel applet for that onboard sound and make certain all effects are turned off. You could also check on the manufacture's web site for updated drivers (Windows update will often "update" drivers with older versions/broken versions ... I let Microsoft only deal with their own stuff and keep their fingers off all else).

Codec packs can also play havoc with the game, so check to see if you have any of those installed (often those get installed silently when you're installing something else).

Turning the music off was just to make sure that the problem was sound related.

Ah sorry I haven't answered quicker.

I'm using a Logitech G430 headset and have all other options in the Sound panel disabled.

My system specs if you need them:

i5-3550 SPU @3.30GHz ~3.7GHz

GeForce 770

16GB RAM

@Forli: No I'm not using any custom music or other music mods.

The odd thing is also, this happens in Morrowind as well.

What sound card is the key thing ... a discrete sound card like Creative SoundBlaster or the sound solution built into your motherboard such as Realtek (i.e. the thing you plug your headset into that takes care of the actual sound processing).

Its VIA High Definition Audio.

I don't have any hands on experience with VIA but here is the link to their driver download portal:

http://download.viatech.com/en/support/driversSelect.jsp

A caveat they have after you've inputted your operating system etc mentions that motherboard makers will probably be the better source for drivers. Finding out who is the motherboard manufacturer for your machine will be a bit more problematic if you are on a desktop machine (for laptops just go to the laptop maker's website). Used to be that you got the motherboard manual when you bought a desktop, but it has been decades since I last bought a desktop machine (I build my own desktop machines, so I always get a manual with my motherboards).

Before trying to find drivers you should check the VIA control panel applet for your current driver version. While in there make sure you have all effects (e.g. concert hall etc) turned off in their control panel applet. From what I can see on their driver download page the latest from them is version 5.60c.

I've tried to let windows itself update the driver but it seems that its already up to date. My driver version is: 6.0.1.10200. I even disabled it and only kept my headphones enabled in the sound menu and it still seems to lag on combat start and end.

I also checked the only option I have turned on is Loudness Equalization which i also turned on and off and it game the the same results.
