Remove Piper's smoking animation?

I do companion mods (incl. Piper, CURIE, etc.), and I'll look into this when I have time- but nobody get their hopes up, because it's my understanding that smoking is 'geographically-targeted' rather than 'character-targeted'.

(Meaning that if you reload and bring a different companion to the same spot on the map, they'll likely smoke too. Note that it's probably human-only.)

Results of my findings aren't so great, tbh.

Smoking, if I'm not mistaken, is an idle flavor animation. These are applied to characters by race and gender, rather than by individual or by geographic marker/target. They're stored in HKX format, which I'm not familiar with, because I'm more programmer than modeller or animator. Additionally, I don't know a way to test idle animations, short of staring dumbly at the screen for hours.

For those reasons, I'm testing a workaround, which you can also try (in the console, after backing up your saves like a smart person):

2F1E.addkeyword 1157E8;
2F1F.addkeyword 1157E8;

What this does is add a keyword to Piper (by both base ID and reference ID), to make the game think she's a child. I figure that if BethSoft's devs had any foresight, they'd have made the cigarette smoking animations adult-only somehow.

Presently, my Piper companion hasn't had a cigarette yet, but she's also quite modified. There's a lot of moving parts, as usual.

If you'd like the try this experiment yourself, you can undo it afterward, by either restoring your saves or using the following lines:

2F1E.removekeyword 1157E8;
2F1F.removekeyword 1157E8;

Edit: fixed the code, damn it.

It's supposed to be the fifties, smoking was not considered bad for your health yet, besides, having to deal with radiation almost every day i do not think having a cigaret matters much. Probably the reason they put it in despite todays anti tobacco stance that basically bans the use of smoking from movies, TV and games. And the French in those days were a nation of smokers, Brigitte Bardot and Gauloises :-) so it definetly fits Curie wheter you like it or not if her programmer took it al the way.

But offcourse you should be able to turn it of, but will probably take the GECK to disable the animation for NPC's, not sure how and if setting Piper as a child might affect the game in a negative way!?

i never saw my Curie smoke, but i did see Cait smoke once. My Piper smoked only during the first few minutes after the first moment when i encountered her, then after having my Piper run around for a while and do stuff she stopped. I agree there should be a mod that will remove the smoking from some characters completely, Piper is definitely one of the characters who should not smoke.
