[HELP] Unusual CTDs : Always crashing 15min after TESV launch

Recommended Posts

THE ISSUE : [PLEASE HEAD TO NEW POST... MORE TESTING HAS BEEN DONE AND THINGS HERE ARE NO IRRELEVANT]
Crashing when running a modded setup of Skyrim. Always 15min after TESV launch (15:12~15:50) with varied load orders and regardless of location, even in main menu.

I've been through nuking it (2x), reviewing ALL my mods, managing conflicts (loot/wrye/tes5edit), optimizing textures(smco/ordinator), and much more. Every single easy fix that you want to suggest, I've probably tried it. I hope at least one person knows what this bulls*** is... I've spent way too much time on this and it looks like I'm the only one with this sort of problem.

If any of you have an idea on how this can be fixed, please comment below.

P.S.: I run a new game every time I test, no I don't believe nuking it again will help, yes I use LOOT and my VRAM is not getting maxed out. [Reddit thread here]

DISCOVERIES AND PROGRESS : (latest update should be helpful towards solving the CTDs)

  • UPDATE#5 : Back to having no clue about why this happens. Vanilla still works, previously working load orders result in crashes and background programs don't seem to interfere (Was worried
about AVG TuneUp). Drivers and Win 10 shouldn't be a problem either and there's no dll causing the crashes (previous problems when using tamriel online). So since none of
these are problematic and vanilla is working, then the problem simply must be the mods or MO itself (doubtful). However different load orders seem to occasionally work, yet
when I try to add a few things to isolate the culprit mod, fail then revert back, the previously working load orders are also crashing exactly 15 minutes in. Papyrus logs are useless
to me as I crash even in the main menu. A possibility is that I reach a sort of limit as to the amount of mods I can run but that's ridiculous as I had a 200+ mod setup running on an
i3 with Intel HD Graphics 4000. TLDR : No logical explanation.... HELP SOLVE THIS..
  • UPDATE#4 : Got it working by removing a few more mods and optimizing textures (clutter, furniture, clothes, etc. to 1k). Highest VRAM around 1600Mb but outside whiterun I get around
1000Mb now. Mods that might be causing the problems : Wet&Cold, The Ruffled Feather, Summerset Isles.
  • UPDATE#3 : Got rid of most mods listed under "contain scripts" and still crash 15min into the game. See Test 4 papyrus log. Sofia Companion stuff shows up a lot now.
  • UPDATE#2 : With MSO gone I now see the other Epic Gameplay Overhaul mods populate the papyrus log. Notably FIO and CWO. Apart from that I see It Rained On and Real Shelter
frequently but these mods require constant updating so they don't really alarm me.
  • UPDATE#1 : Looking through the papyrus logs I see Movement & Stamina Overhaul pop up LOTS of times and it can be seen at the end of both logs. Though knowing that it has to apply its
effects often these warnings/errors don't seem unusual to me. Is this something that could be causing the problems?

Backgroud Information : (to avoid the generic "get rid of texture mods" or "script mods too heavy" tips)

  • My rig : i7-5500U, 8G RAM, Geforce 840M with 2G DDR3, on Windows 10. Playing at ~30 FPS using SKSE (Memory Allocation Patch -> 1Gig Total) and NO ENBs
  • Typical Memory Blocks Log : 248/768 119/256
  • Typical VRAM Usage : 500MB~1500MB (max 2048MB)
  • Typical RAM Usage : 1000MB~2300MB (max 8094MB)
  • Tools I use : Mod Organizer, LOOT v8, Wrye Bash (3.06), TES5Edit, Ordinator, SMCO, TexBlend. Tried ENBoost (no gfx) : same issues
  • No crashes with : Vanilla skyrim + skse has 0 problems. (3x 40min tests)
Occasionally while fiddeling with mods I get a load order that survives the 15min mark, when I come back to it again there's a high probability of it crashing.

Last Working Load Order : MODWATCH *Updated on 22/09/15 12:25PM*

Crashing Load Order : MODWATCH *Updated on 23/09/15 3:16AM*

Current Load Order : MODWATCH *Updated on 23/09/15 2:30PM*

Papyrus logs : (For the few magicians capable of analyzing this)
[Test 1] [Test 2] [Test 3] [Test 4] [Test 5](No crash) [Test 6](Should have errors from a few different runs)

TESV Monitor : Showing typical run (Notice Elapsed Time) TYPICAL 8 TESTS IN ONE BASHED PATCH

TEST RUNS

  • Test 1:
Open -> New Game -> Pick to join Companions -> Go to the bed -> Spawn inside jorrvarsk -> 2 members sparring (female has purple texture-less body *fixed*) -> exit to whiterun -> purple sprinnigan during loading sequence. -> Run around whiterun for a few minutes -> exit to skyrim -> loading hangs after a bit *(that's normal)* -> leave for a drink, come back, skyrim is gone. (papyrus 1)

  • Test 2 :
Open -> New Game -> Pick escape -> leave -> run around outside abandonned prison -> die, respawn -> run towards throat of the world -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 2)

  • Test 3 :
Same as test 1 except I stayed still in whiterun till the crash -> Particularities : statue of mara invisible, njada still has purple body, crossed aela and her body is weird and doesn't fit the head *fixed* and finally the papyrus log stopped 5min before the crash (I wasn't moving) -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 3)

  • Test 4 : (fixed texture/mesh issues...) (Got rid of most script mods)
Same as test 3 except I visited dragonsreach -> used tcl ran to azura statue and back -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus 4)

  • Test 5 : (more texture optimizations) (Got rid of more mods)
Same as test 4 -> ran around whiterun -> left to skyrim and ran towards rorikstead -> exited after playing successfully for 30min (papyrus | TESV Monitor | Load Order)

  • Test 6 : (added back all mods I want, wrye bash conflict management, made a bashed patch
Stayed on main menu for 7min -> started new game -> chose to sail to dawnstar -> ran a bit then stood on barrel near docs till crash -> crash 15min into execution time (papyrus |TESV Monitor | Load Order)

Ok you are playing on a somewhat weak system due to your graphics card and using both interesting NPC and inconsequential NPC. Along with several city changing mods. You are more than likely just over taxing your system. Eliminate interesting npc and the city overhauls and try on a clean save and see what happens.

Probably not what you wanna hear....but dont ask questions if you dont want to know the answer lol. Basically you are gonna have to seriously lighten the load to stop the crashing. I play with around 70 mods including ENB and almost never get a CTD.

your rig isn't weak, not really powerful but it can run all your mod without a problem.

here is my advise, Purity + Sfo + Smim bundle is a fps killer, try to choose , go with Purity + Sfo even Sfo is really heavy now

because it's a laptop, your main problem is heat and performance setup, i'm pretty sure that's why it shut down every 15 mins, if it was the game it should be random!

go in the setup panel and create a high perf profile, you must be plug in not on battery and set every thing to the high lvl, no stand by etc.., most important HDD and CPU

go in NVIDIA setup

change for single screen perf and power mode to full power

Do you use SKSE.ini memory patch?

Have you used Tes5edit to clean mods with conflicts? Have you tried using TES5Merged Patch.

Yes I use the memory patch, should of been more clean about that.

And yes I use TES5Edit (background information section exists for that)

But I clean mods that were flagged by LOOT + DLC. How do I "clean" mods with conflicts or do a merged patch (I usually let perkus maximus do its own thing and use that) ?

I love you for trying to help but can you read the background info first?

I'll add some more to that :

  • vanilla runs maybe 5-15 fps more depending on location (ETAC being gone = no stress in certain locations).
  • I use AVG TuneUp's Turbo mode when pugged in (aka when I play, or in this case try to play)
  • I'm always on Window's High performance mode (laptop manages it automagically tnx to TuneUp)
  • If you check the TESV Monitor Screenshot you can see that performance nor heat are not issues here
  • Here's another screenshot with many tests on it just in case [LINK] Each test can be see pretty clearly, look for everything suddenly falling to 0

Breakdown : 1st 3 tests (sample 0~2500) are in menu, crash 15min in.

4th is vanilla exited after around 30min (ends at ~4400)

5th one is me actively doing things around the game before again crashing 15min in. (6000~6750)

final three are again main menu tests

Had it been performance related I wouldn't be crashing in the main menu. Bonus : I run Witcher 3 / GTA V for hours and they are far more demanding.

I used both these mods and more on my desktop with an i5 and a shitty low-profile radeon HD 6570 only difference is my shadow settings. Not only that but I can run much newer and more taxing games with no issues.

Check my background information section, it specifically exists to mitigate "weak system" comments. Lastly if you still think I'm over taxing my system can you please provide some insight into how it is I'm doing that (like @korun did), you have all the performance graphs in the OP.

EDIT#1 : Currently testing without SMIM, Interesting NPCs, Incosequential NPCs or Dawn of Skyrim Collection. Will be back in 15min..

EDIT#2 : Crashed in main menu after 15 minutes. [Performance] [Load Order]

Since you use MO make sure your SKSE.ini is not overwritten by any other mods that have it's own SKSE.ini . Simple way to check go to your MO- Mods folder and search for SKSE.ini. Also if you have installed the patch through Mo make sure it is located at bottom in the left pane so it's not overwritten.

Also try using Enboost with graphics modifications off. There is an extensive post in comment section made ArturoPlayerOne which he explains a lot.

And finally if nothing works try reducing Hi-Res Texture mods as those above have stated.

To create Tes5Merged patch, i have linked a video in my previous post

Already tried everything except merged patch. I talked to gromulos in chat and he suggested I do a bashed patch. So I sorted things using Wrye Bash and made a patch. I threw all my mods (~140) back on here and we'll see what happens. Update soon.

UPDATE : Still dies 15min in. One time windows popped up telling me that Skyrim stopped and when I tried to debug (VS2015) it was talking about writing access violations

1st sorry, i've read your post to fast :) then in your .ini :

fAutosaveEveryXMins =15.0000.

you probably crash on auto save which is a long known bug for many players, disable ingame all saving setup, keep just the last and set it to 60 min.

you'll have to save manually then but it's worth the try :)
