SSE How can I make my custom-voiced follower talk to Lydia?

Hi everyone,

 

I'm working on a custom-voiced follower and I think I'm on top of things like idle chatter, quest commentary etc., but one thing I'm not sure about is conversations with other NPCs! Popular followers like Inigo and Vilja are able to respond to an NPC such as Lydia when she says a particular line. I can make it work using scenes if I make *my* NPC say his line first, triggering the scene to start, but what I'd really like is for him to reply when Lydia says one of her idle lines. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
