Newbie Modder looking for a game to start with

Hi there.

Been a fan of Mods ever since I discovered they where a thing. Lately since i have a bit more free time been wondering about getting into modding myself.

Specifically modifying AI, always been interested in messing with AI behavior, patching, etc.

Im pretty new to Modding, like the only "Modding" experience i have was with the old Warcraft III creator, making my own quirky units, changing projectiles, ability interactions and what not.

Currently im looking for a game that i can mess with, i have a few ideas but though it would be good to check on a modding forum with people who probably know better than i do, just in case there are better options.

Here are some specifications on what im looking for:

- Easy to mod (Relatively speaking) or easy to understand.

- Has existing modding tools (fan made or otherwise), or at least easy to understand how to mod.

- Relatively active fanbase for feedback and sharing.

- Doesnt require a monster Rig to run. My old laptop can only take so much.

For reference its an old Dell Laptop with an Intel i5 core, 6G ram and no graphics card. A game like Dead Cells runs perfectly with relatively high graphics, but then games with more stuff to run like Total War Warhammer II has lots of hiccups on main map and in Battles ranges from good (with rare hiccups) to intermittent hiccups or slowdown depending on how many swarmy units are on the field. That kind of old laptop.

Again im not looking to create new models or brand new zones (yet) but more like messing around with already existing assets and AI behavior, Like In Skyrim creating a bandit camp but the bandits have Incomplete Dwarf armors sets and fight with enchanted Pickaxes, and maybe they are all bossed around by a giant Skeever that spews fire. That kind of modding.

Two games that got perked my interest are RimWorld and Skyrim (Special Edition), witch im starting to read on. However if you guys got better options for a newb like me leave your comments.

Thanks in Advance, hope i made sense and cant wait to see your suggestions.

Skyrim SE would likely give you all sorts of interesting things to play with, as it's the same engine FO4 runs on, and there are some VERY cool AI mods for FO4. Trouble is, not sure it would run on an integrated graphics solution.... not sure it would even walk.... and convincing the construction kit to run, would be another can of worms...... It can be problematic on even beastly powerful rigs.....

Fallout 4 would be another game you might consider, suppose it just depends on which genre you prefer. :D (but, same issues would apply, not sure Skyrim SE, or FO4 would run on integrated video.....)

Well a long time ago i remmeber downloading Skyrim (about a month after it came out give or take) and the game ran just fine, on like medium-high settings.

So given the specifications Skyrim SE should run just fine since its the same Laptop.

Fallout 4 does destroy my rig, i tried it multiple times. FO3 and New Vegas run well so SKyrim should work.

ALso when you say Construction Kit is that like a Skyrim modding tool or a FO4 thing?

Greetings.

You should like Morrowind and Oblivion.

Hmmm given your name im not sure thats a fair and unbias suggestion har har.

I have seen videos about Oblivion but i dunno, Magic system looks hella fun to mess around with and the factions seems to actually matter. Gameplay just seems like yank city.

I have heard A LOT of good things about it so i will definelly give it a shot eventually and test it for myself

Oblivion CAN be a really fun game, when properly modded. I hated vanilla, to the point I played for about 45 minutes, and determined the game mechanics just sucked, and quit. Couple years later, when FCOM came out in it's full glory, Oblivion became a much more interesting game. (and I even have a mod out for it, Advanced Magecraft. Makes the magic system MUCH more useful.) Installing FCOM is an exercise though...... There used to be several REALLY good guides for it, but, those are becoming harder to find, as the sites that hosted them have disappeared..... I *think* there are still one or two out there. But, haven't played in quite some time.

Morrowind was a great game right out of the box. It had some bugs, and it ain't for everyone, but, there are STILL folks modding morrowind. :D
