Just an idea: Why not make use of our great picture artists here and use the most endorsed picture for the site banner. BlueDanube pictures would be much more appropriate and fit the 'Fallout-Feel' so much better than the emotionless, generic banner we now have.
-
I just want to ask one questions: Where is the Fallout feeling of this site gone? There is not one thing in this design that takes reference to the game it is about. After some getting used to one will find everything just as fast as before, but the old design is still the better choice. More text and more pictures on one screen, better overlook and proportions of pictures and text, less showy and willfully hip, Pictures in image section of mods had titles, endorsement tab on modsite showed Users who endorsed regardless of comment or no comment(I gave users Kudos or Rep which is now impossible :/), no cutting off or squezzed pictures - my mod site now has a much unsharper and cut off picture as banner - not a good way to promote my mod :/

Ground texture corrupted
MentalGear replied to MentalGear's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Yes I'm sure that all was deinstalled correctly because all packs were backed up, installed and deinstalled with FOMM package manager. Revalidating the game files is no option for me, never change a running game. It would be impossible to recreate the exact same order of installed mods and their countless updates(70+ modcount) and since I have no problems with crashes whatsoever I really don't want to spoil that. It would be important to know which file tells the ground to be texturized with a certain texture. Because there seems to be a conflict in telling the ground which texture file to use. Otherwise it wouldn't be possible for a normal map to show up as a ground texture. -
Ground texture corrupted
MentalGear replied to MentalGear's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Yes I have several texture packs installed: Textures over time, Ojo Bueno, NMC, mine and several others. I already deinstalled them all but the problem was still there. For me the game is totally stable since 1.4 despite the 70 mods that I'm using. Not a crash for the last two weeks. And with all those fine mods like EVE, Project Nevada, AWOP, Warzones aso this game really kicks ass. -
I have this strange problem that in the quarry near Sloan the ground texture has big dark spots and shows strange behavior. Every few seconds it changes the texture it uses, sometimes its even the normal map that is shown. http://www.abload.de/thumb/falloutnv2011-08-0420-zumx.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/falloutnv2011-08-0420-iufq.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/falloutnv2011-08-0420-4uc8.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/falloutnv2011-08-0420-6usd.jpg This also happens when I go to Jacobstown. Now my problem is how to find the culprit. Can this be purely texture related or can a .nif file also be the problem?

Laugh back at you for misunderstanding my words so intensly. How does the word "experience" imply that you would know a gazillion IDs by heart? ;D You forgot the possiblity that by coincidence maybe you just worked on this object(the woodcart). Really no need to make me look like a dork, because of asking.

Ah great, thanks for the filename/filepath. Did you know it from expierience or is there a way for users like me to backtrack the texture by the Ref. ID?
-
Hello Is there a way to find out the name of a texture with only the Reference ID? Maybe GECK? I ask because I'm searching for the correct name of the texture for a wood planked trailer with the Ref ID 0015173e. Greets MG

Man calm down. Thats what I hate about the internet, everybody misunderstands what I'm trying to say, everybody just follows their own assumptions and jumps to strange conclusions. The NON existent 'error' I was talking about is giving a texture 11 Mipmaps while its original texture should have 8 Mipmaps, just for example. So if you would use your method not caring about how many mipmaps it should have you would then reproduce this hypothetical error. :wallbash: I just wanted to expand your knowledge, sorry for trying. :( And that has what to do with this topic? Again assumption, wrong conclusion. If you use lets say 30.000 textures and every one of them has lets say FOR EXAMPLE 11 mipmaps instead of 8 mipmaps(lets say for this hypothetical example 8 would be the correct number) then there would be an awful lot more to calculate. So mipmaps can influence performance. Lets just say we misunderstood each other pretty thoroughly. @rausheim THX very much for the hint with the tinted mipmaps. That will help me narrow down the culprits.

@nivea The selection 'ALL' is only OK if you know that the number of mipmaps of your source .dds file is correct or the same as the original texture it is replacing. Otherwise you just reproduce the error. But normally 1 or 2 textures with too much mipmaps should not reduce the performance at all. In my case the whole game has new textures so the overall performance hit should/could? be much greater. @tunaisafish I'm not really shocked, just wanted to be funny in an awkward way :ninja:

Yeah would be good to know for sure if mipmaps are used *headscratch*. But why would Bethesda then go to the length and put in different numbers of mipmaps, if they are not used? I'm pretty sure they wont have done that if mipmaps were not used. Here is a link for a tool which shows you the mipmap count(Geditor), because its rather tiring to count them. Geditor: http://www.gtr4u.de/index.php?page=DatabaseItem&id=gtr-2-allgemein/gtr2-utilities/1-geditor&l=2 Just start and import your dds. file from Fallout NV: http://www.abload.de/thumb/testcqsj.jpg

I'm rather shocked :ninja: Number of mipmaps of a texture should be common knowlwdge if one is uploading textures. I thought number of mipmaps in original textures would be the most basic question of all for a modder. Even know a site where your files wont get hosted if you upload the wrong number of mipmaps for your modded textures. Come to think of it, maybe I should ask a much more complicated question: Can anyone explain how I can export the original textures(.dds files)? Then its a matter of ten seconds and I know the number of mipmaps. EDIT: Just taught myself how to extract the dds. files and took a look for myself. For anyone who wants to know, like all the texture uploaders, how many mipmaps your textures should have: I've now looked at 30 original textures and they have between 0(pipboy images), 8(machete, maglockpick), 9(teddybear, fireextinguisher) and 11 mipmaps(world textures, dog).
-
Now thats a worry. Half the world seems to upload modded textures here, but no one knows how many mipmaps they should have? Thats like driving a car without knowing what the gearlever is for.
-
Hello I have downloaded loads of textures for FNV and on some of them I want to do corrections for private use. Now my question is: How many mipmaps are common e.g. for the original New Vegas armor textures? All I can say is most of the modded textures have 10 mipmaps(11 in plugin setting), but I assume thats partly due to paint programs where you can't set the number of mipmaps. Is there any difference in game-performance if, lets say the original texture would have 5 mipmaps and I use textures with 10 mipmaps? Greets MG

Make Steam less intrusive
MentalGear replied to MentalGear's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Ahh, yeah right. Very funny answers. I laughed a lot. Also seems you two misunderstood the question completely. The advertising pop-ups are from the steam-app. And I'm happy that I don't share your twisted views Lt Albrecht. I just wanted to know how to disable to steam-related pop-ups. I really have no interest in your phobia-discussion. I already figured out how to disable nearly all of them thanks to more serious answers in another forum. Thanks. -
Hello I never used Steam before, but with New Vegas I simply have to. Now I'm very annoyed by the constant pop-ups Steam is giving for every little crap I don't care about. Even stupid advertising pop-ups are now on my PC. First thing I will do is delete the registry entry for startup. Can you guys give me some tips for setting up Steam to be less 'there' and less intrusive? Cheers MG

How much stuff is there to do in the Wasteland?
MentalGear replied to Aethelheim's topic in Fallout 3's Discussion
I also find it very rewarding to do big tours through the wasteland. There are several places for random encounters. Now on my third playthrough I found lots of new stuff and locations. And it is impressive how much little secrets this game has (e.g. Keller family). With help of the F3 Wiki you find so much items in places you wouldn't even care to look. Atm I will get myself the Reservist's rifle. Timewise I would say I spend 70% of the time wasteland roaming or following those intriguing unfilled triangles :ninja: .
