Thanks Wightmage! Keep the message going! To be clear, I'm not mad that I didn't get a thanks for donating, I'm not entitled to a thanks. I'm just saying, it makes the donator feel really good about donating to know it is appreciated. I can't know if the modders who don't respond are ungrateful, I would highly suspect that they are grateful (unless there are modders out there literally sitting on Scrooge McDuck piles of money, which I doubt). Anyways, let's keep the movement for raising donation awareness going!
  2. In response to post #24837689. #24838489, #24839739 are all replies on the same post. Discussion =/= trolling. There has been some trolling but most of what I've seen is legit attempts at discussion (no matter how out there some positions are). The trendy thing to do on the internet is call anyone who disagrees with you a troll.

Another aspect to look at is Valve's refund policy. After 24 hours, they would tell you to go pound sand. That sort of thing doesn't fly with physical goods. That and the very real DMCA claims that were popping up on mods was set to turn the paid marketplace into an absolute train-wreck. Also, I love Valve's one rule that they would not curate. Really Valve? Because your lack of curation has gone over big with the rest of the gaming community. Flood the market with 15 year old games that are barely functional? Sure!
  4. I want to say thank you to Robin today. I heard him mention (in an interview with TB) that he really wanted to delete a lot of the comments that were made (that weren't in violation of the ToS) and he didn't. Good on you! Not suppressing dissent (like Valve did) it is so important for a community. Some of the things people said were pretty distressing for someone who supports modders, but discussion should never be suppressed. Also, anyone who hasn't should listen to at least some of the interview on TotalBiscuit's YouTube channel.

Just throwing this out there. I've donated to many modders and have only received a note of thanks from one. I'm not talking small $5 donations either. I've made several $100 donations and got no response. Does that make the modder ungrateful as well? I will say, the one who replied received several other donations. As someone who has donated over $1000 to modders, I was upset by the idea that a.) I would likely need to pay again for mods I had donated to and way way more importantly b.) I don't want 75% of my money going to Bethesda and Valve. The terms of this deal were horrific (reminded me of the Nintendo "deal" for YouTubers). As Robin and other members of the community have pointed out, Valve and Bethesda put so little thought into this program it is insulting. Perhaps after a re-think and maybe actually consulting a large segment of the community, something can be put together for the future (and probably future title ie Fallout 4). My hope in all this (and here is a pessimist being optimistic for once), is that attention has been drawn to the issue and more people will donate to modders. It is a long shot, but I feel this is what the reasonable part of the community should be pushing for. Instead we've turned inwards. There is plenty of blame to go around, but I for one, will never forget that it was Bethesda and Valve's insulting lack of understanding of the community that has ended up causing the community to turn on itself.

The program was a terrible solution. Valve would only seek to increase their take over time. Getting in on a 25% stake just to have something would compromise your hope to ever get properly compensated for work. It also wasn't feasible due to the way many mods interconnect with others(I think Valve and Bethesda really didn't understand how this worked). Personally, I don't think we're back to square one. This has raised some very good points about mod authors getting compensated for their work. I know I've seen quite a few pledges from folks in comments to make a greater effort to donate to their favorite mod authors. I know you're mad and are probably seeing the negative more (because that is how humans work), but from my perspective I saw quite a bit of support for modders. Especially on YouTube where people like TotalBiscuit, Boogie2988, Gopher, Brodual, etc. discussed the issues in a fairly balanced way. However, the main issue is that Valve and Bethesda were trying to steam roll modders with the pipe dream of being able to make a living off modding. Have you done the math on how much you would have to sell to make a living off of their pathetic 25%? And that's 25% that taxes still have to come out of. Consider the $10k Valve cited as being spent on paid mods. That is $2,500 to modders. Take into consideration some countries where the tax rates on online self-employed work is monstrous (ie Norway, Sweden) and you're left with very little. I can't speak for modders, as I'm not one. But I would not be happy if my donations to modders went through Valve and Bethesda. At least with their 75% grab. If Valve/Bethesda can re-work the deal to take a small (say 25% split amongst them) cut on donations to modders, then I think it could go forward. I don't think I'm currently using any of your mods. I would deactivate them out of respect for your decision. I know I have in the past though (and wish I could make a few work better with the mods I am using(not your issue)) , and I know I haven't donated to you yet. As a small token of what I think the majority of the long-term community thinks of modders, I shall make one today.
  8. In response to post #24765204. #24765939, #24766349, #24766914, #24767844, #24769849 are all replies on the same post. To be honest I saw most of the hate being directed at Valve and Bethesda. I saw most of the mods title "Pay me for doing nothing" as an attack on Valve for taking a 35% cut for hosting only.

I don't believe there is a corporation running the craft fairs and taking 75%. As someone who has donated getting close to $1k to various modders/content makers, that was my biggest complaint about the system. Do I want to financially support modders when I can? Damn right. Do I want to give 75% of that money to Valve and Bethesda? Hell no.

  11. In response to post #24730434. Any lawyer worth a damn would run the hell away from the mess that would've been involved. The nature of the community to use community assets and require other mods makes the whole thing a mess. If Valve/Bethesda are smart, they'll hop on board the donation train and take a small percentage as a "processing" fee. That said, there are scummy lawyers who could make this a long drawn out war. But, they've tipped their hand now. I genuinely believe that Bethesda and Valve got into this mess without doing the proper research and they had a very, very poor understanding of the Skyrim modding scene.

  13. In response to post #24662939. Basically, yes. There is apparently an option through the steam workshop to defer 5% of Valve's cut to the Nexus, but I cannot see implementation of a pay-mod system here. You'll still have the ability to donate (for those authors who have that option as well as to the site itself) but no storefront. The Nexus will live on!

Psijonica, you seem to be the one acting childish in this thread. Your angry and you're ranting on like an angst-filled teen. Yes, I'm not very active on the forums and haven't done any modding, that is part of the reason I'm not shouting at Nexus staff or modders who want to be paid for their work. You, as someone who seems to only be able to shout, should be required to prove your contributions if you're going to shout. I don't believe you're able to speak on behalf of the modders as you seem to be trying to do. Also, I can't believe your stance on no donations is a popular one amongst modders. I believe they'll take a stand against pay-for-mods but I find it hard to imagine that they would stand against optional donations. That seems silly
