  1. Tell me about it, tried the diablotek again to test old motherboard and my vid card.... heard the PSU start whining... total system shutdown, and it appears it literally FRIED my GPU... this has not been a good month for my rig... first the PSU, then mobo, now Graphics card.... STAY AWAY FROM CHEAP ASS PSU's!
  2. Next we'll have Steam monitors. I don't mean that as in Steam COMPUTER monitors, they'll actually send someone to your house to watch you and make sure that you're not illegally modding the games or hacking. Oh, and the cost of the ppl watching you come from your pocket, not steam's.
  3. OH... MY... GOD! If Bethesda fixes at least most of the crashing issues with the upcoming patch and releases the DLC that allows to travel to MORROWIND AND CYRODIIL in the next year (or at least one of them) then by all means, I will forgive them for this initial hiccup!
  4. ... And now I have to find whoever thought it would be a GOOD idea to say "Hey, there's a texture bug on 360, stuttering snowballing lag on PS3, and it's more or less unplayable for a good portion of ppl on PC... lets leave PC for last and have 2/3 of the team work on the Xbox 360 textures." along with the PC version's QA team. I must give these ppl a piece of advice.
  5. Actually it should be like monday or tuesday that patch comes out...
  6. well until my mobo comes in, I can't check through steam, but GamePro.com says the same thing. The article on gamepro
  7. Ah, ok. We just confused each other. No, the one I have right now is only 20A on 2 12v legs. While the one I just ordered has 4 12v legs 34A on each (or so it says) so it should be good... As for the motherboard, I just need a decent (somewhat inexpensive) one that's AM3 and ATX sized (forgot to mention that last time, I've had a MSI microATX board and it got REAL HOT real fast. Nothing against MSI though since I've heard about microATX boards overheating). Leaning towards this mobo In patch news, it seems they skimmed over the PC issues (Why does no one pay attention to Skyrim-PC's problems enough to fix them?) (still waiting patiently for the patch, though)
  8. Uh, haven't gotten the Raidmax one yet... the Diablotek is the one I was using. Are you telling me the one I just spent 125 USD might not even work?! The 600w (previously thought it was 500w due to me mixing up invoices) keeps crapping out on me. It'll randomly stop working altogether. The 850w (which I should get tomorrow) is HOPEFULLY powerful enough to handle my power needs. ...then there's the mobo... which is beginning to piss me off. Half the time it boots, half the time it doesn't get to bios before crapping out and screaming.
  9. I'm avoiding the Diablotek brand of PSU's for at least a few years... current PSU (Diablotek) specs: +5@25A, +3.3V@20A, +12V1@20A, +12V2@20A, [email protected], [email protected] (ordered from Amazon so it doesn't obviously list stuff like that) New PSU (Raidmax) specs: +3.3V@24A, +5V@30A, +12V1@34A, +12V2@34A, +12V3@34A, +12V4@34A,[email protected] ,[email protected] (Ordered from newegg so I can get a good amount of reviews) mind you I don't know what half of those mean, but from what I heard about my current one... it's closer to 300w than 600w (was looking at wrong invoice at the time of reporting 500w) either way, the one I have works... and previously worked well, but for some reason the rig is shutting down completely (fans, cpu, everything) and I have tried 3 power cords for it, so they're not to blame. Also gonna order a new mobo (as much of a pain in the ass as THAT is gonna be) so any suggestions for a good AM3 board that's less than 150 USD? and back on topic: Placing bets on Skyrim patch fixing the majority of game-breaking problems for PC! Odds are 13:1 that it'll allow 80% or more to play!
  10. Ah, ok. Now I get it. I forgot to factor in the the efficiency. I think my current one has a 80% efficiency (it says) but for some reason I can only get stable power if I remove 2 of my fans and my backup HDD. I figure I'll keep the one I have now as a backup. Also I don't OC the CPU much (it's a Black Edition, I just don't want to have to upgrade the cooler atm) though it sits about about 40oC most of the time. Which my friend told me that it could also be the mobo (Biostar Motherboard TA790GXB3) isn't allowing the PSU to properly maintain the correct amount of power to the CPU. Either way, if it IS the mobo that's causing me so much grief, I won't buy a Biostar mobo again. It's the third one I've gotten (One I had to RMA to get current one).
  11. Min requirements on that card are a 500w PSU. If total system power consumption on load was only 300w, why require a 500w PSU or even make any PSU above about 600w? To make sure you have enough power when you need it. Besides most tests are using the bare minimum rigs anyway, which I don't know anyone that uses the most basic they can get.Yes I could have saved money and went with a lesser PSU when I bought the new one, but it was highly recommended by a friend of mine that builds computers for a living. So I'm going with my friend on this one rather than someone I don't know on the internet. Plus I'm slowly upgrading my system, which will require more power anyway when I have a couple of vidcards in Crossfire/SLI. If I'm coming off as a pompous ass, I'm sorry, but I'm not meaning to be. I'm simply trying to point out that getting the minimum didn't work out for me.
  12. ok just so everyone knows what we (or in some cases -I-) have tried If it sounds silly, stupid, or crazy... well that's because I'm silly, tired, and crazy.... and now I'll never get the bloodstains out of my computer... though they give it an awesome look.
  13. HD6850 on load uses about 200-300w while Phenom X4 uses about 170-190w on load. I have a Diablotek 500w PSU. So that used up quite a chunk of power, plus this'll give me a good amount of leeway for upgrades in the future. Plus I'm beginning to wonder if my mobo is f**king up since I"m randomly crashing shortly after startup (and well before I play skyrim) AGAIN and my onboard graphics don't work for some odd reason. I really hope it's not the GPU though.... that would suck. And now I shall get back to the topic at hand: Is anyone else just gonna wait for the patch to see if it fixes the problems?
  14. I actually found out from a friend that his comp keeps crashing cuz he didn't have enough power going to his GPU. And I'm thinking that my issue is the same since I just realized I have a 500w PSU atm. So I ordered a new one (800w) so I should be in business by the time the patch arrives. btw I use a Radeon HD 6850 (Sapphire Toxic) and a Phenom X4 965 (3.4GHz Stock) so it's not a case of too little specs.
  15. voldoman, 1) I have tried the underclocking and damn near ruined my computer, 2) they have a borderless window mod so that windowed looks like fullscreen. and finally 3) EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE HAS BEEN MENTIONED AT LEAST ONCE EACH! READ THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE POSTING!
  16. What bothers me most about this is Bethesda's silence on progress. If they would just say "Hey guys, we think we may have found a possible solution, but it requires more testing" or "We thought we found a solution, but it's only a stop-gap solution, more details later." I'd be happy. Instead all we get it is "We're working. Come back later." and "We're gonna fix Xbox textures! We gonna fix PS3 lag!" and simply IGNORING all of us. Don't get me wrong, I'm DELIGHTED they're working on the issues (allegedly) but come on, telling us they're working on the PS3 lag and Xbox texture issues (which do in fact work AND play!). But with no info on why the PC versions are broken and how they're planning to fix it (or even as I stated earlier their progress) is frustrating. So many blogs and articles go on and on about how the CONSOLES are getting screwed but only a few (almost all PC exclusive) tell us about how PC users can't even PLAY!
  17. Ok, DanRocco, I can tell you right now, a box fan doesn't do anything (I have tried) unless you use it to EXHAUST. Pointing into the the computer doesn't cool the components down directly and really could do more damage by overpowering your case's fans and circulating hot air. As an exhaust, it works fairly well to pull hot air out, but again, not all that well. If you want an oversized fan to circulate air, I suggest a shop fan (looks abit like half a yin-yang, has intake on the side of it and forces air through a tiny opening) in exhaust mode. Really box fan sized fans are a bit too powerful to use as intake since A) they will typically only circulate air in the case and B) more importantly you could wind up causing something like a bit of paper (or even a particularly dense dust ball) to clog the cpu/gpu fan(s), without you noticing or just plain clogging them with dust. Or you could use one to create something of a wind tunnel (put up a couple pieces of cardboard or something around computer (2 parallel pieces about 3-6 inches from sides of computer) and pushing air past the entire case. Even better would be liquid cooling setup for your rig. One of my friends showed me a neat lil rig he made using some old refrigerator parts. He literally attached the coils to one side of the case and set it up to keep that side at about 5oC in the summer with moisture control capsules taped to the inside of that wall. And before you guys start freaking out about that, it's a double-walled case he built. The inside of his OC rig maxes out at about 50oC with 2 fans (front bottom intake and top rear exhaust) with that system.
  18. Ok, I'm with others in that almost 100% of ppl here are suffering from a TOTAL SYSTEM CRASH, and this should not happen on a game that has be officially released. They really should have checked it out on a multitude of setups first, or if they did, should have really stress tested it on said setups. Also, how is a total system crash bug "almost unavoidable"? Seems like that should be a major red flag. I'd also say that they more or less ripped off the modding community with some things. Finishing moves are (from what I've seen) pretty close to Deadly Reflexes for Obliv, HUD looks nearly identical to another mod I've seen. And one mod (which was never finished, but the idea seems blatantly ripped off of) had you being able to absorb souls from high-level enemies to use more powerful versions of spells. I can't remember the names of the HUD mod or the Souls = More powerful spells mod (that one kind of died when the creator figured out he was in over his head with bugs), but Deadly Reflexes by (I think the modder's name was) Skycaptain or something similar, seems to be pretty close to blatantly ripped off and added to Skyrim. Also, I've only heard about a few minor issues and some major texture bugs with Xbox version. PS3 (I have heard rumors that it can corrupt your hard drive) and PC (confirmed it can force your computer to shut down) seem to be the more serious issues. The reason that the Xbox is getting special treatment is that Microsoft has a contract or something that Xbox get patches/DLC/Official stuff first. HOWEVER! They report that they are in fact working on a patch. Link to PC Gamer article
  19. ok, looking at this, I have a theory. It seems the game is somehow overloading the memory on our video cards with faulty data. When said data is repeatedly accessed, it causes something of a memory corruption, forcing our video cards to try and fix the problem by re-loading the data from the game. As it repeatedly tries to load and reload the data it overworks itself and shuts off. I am not saying that this is correct, but it is a somewhat viable theory imho. I have heard of games that cause a video card to try and load faulty graphical data and it essentially shuts down to prevent catastrophic failure.
  20. OK, it turns out that one of the times that I had to hard reset, it somehow caused a feedback loop in the display drivers. My system thought it was CCC version 11.10, but the GPU was thinking it was version 10.09. This caused a bit of an... argument. After rolling back the drivers (might update them again tomorow) I then had to to do a syscheck through the advanced startup menu. After my computer opened an orphanage for orphaned files and retrieved all of them, it has started up nicely. Also, it seems when I turned fan override off, it froze my system and crashed it for some odd reason.... so not gonna touch that again >_<. So far system seems stable, but I have to get up early tomorrow so I can't put it through it's paces with Fallout 3 (Not gonna touch Skyrim until I get -PLAYER- confirmation that a patch fixes the majority of our problems) and I know that Fallout 3 works on my computer (or at least did work). Also, kudos to monsterminty for the driver suggestion (I was gonna buy a new motherboard)
  21. I'm having trouble even getting to the windows startup screen (sometimes it crashes and freezes on bios screen) A friend said that maybe it was the motherboard (Biostar TA790GXB3) since my GPU is literally pretty f'ing huge and heavy it may have caused damage to the PCI-E slot. I'm rather hoping this isn't the case obviously, but I've tried using the built in GPU to test and it doesn't work at all either. Any ideas? And yes I know that has nothing to do with skyrim, but I'm hoping SOMEONE may know so I can get BACK to skyrim. EDIT: oh and before anyone asks, yes I fully removed the discrete graphics card before testing the built-in, and I get the same results, either nothing shows up and the computer hangs and crashes or I see a bunch of blue boxes going nuts on the screen and the computer hangs and crashes.
  22. OK, I found a HUUUUUUGE bug. When I tried to go into Whiterun after slaying the first dragon, I heard my card's fan kick up to high gear, drop down to almost unhearable and repeat that for a few seconds. Then my PC crashed (as per usual) and I went to reboot the system. And now it hangs and stops responding during simple low-graphic-intensive tasks like opening documents. Using my laptop to post this since my system is pretty well buggered. BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT F**K WITH YOUR SYSTEM AND KEEP TRYING. I MAY HAVE JUST RUINED MY GPU UNDERCLOCKING AND PLAYING SKYRIM! WAIT FOR THE PATCH!
  23. Ok, scratch the underclock thing, I just had a system fail even when I underclocked. Guess I was just lucky the last couple times.... or it COULD be that the CCC turned off my off my override and boosted GPU clock to 820... Don't you just HATE it when your override is overridden?
  24. I've read (either here or elsewhere) about some XP and Vista users that have the same problem as us Win7 users. Also, I'm pretty sure UNDERclocking your card won't hurt it. I don't know much about computers (Not stupid per se, but I'm not a guru) and I have never heard of underclocking hurting your rig (performance yes, but not actual damage) especially if you use the GPU's control suite to do so.... unless you go stupid and underclock it to almost 0 or underclock the fan (if you call it that, I don't know really know what to call it) in which case, yes you could do some damage. Either way, the underclocking seems to work for me so far, and I'm happy with it. Also, I have my GPU fan at 50% to keep GPU cool-ish. ALSO: Yes, wait for the patch, if you constantly crash, DO NOT KEEP TRYING IMMEDIATELY!
  25. Ok, I tried the underclocking method on my Radeon HD 6850 and it works for me ALMOST exactly as they said. GPU still maxed out at 75C, so I'll wait for patch, but at least I can play for short bursts (well relatively short, about 2-3 hours) and I love it. Only problem I had was random texture bugs. A few textures took a second to load or fix themselves so it looked a bit weird sometimes. I'll await the patch to see if it works but at least I can play for now.
