I tried validating my game files that way; it made no difference. I also checked and there is a steam_api64.dll file under the main SSE folder under steam apps so I have no idea why it is giving me this error. I also uninstalled and reinstalled CK64 but that didn't work either. Do I really need to uninstall and reinstall SSE?
-
I reinstalled Creation Kit 64 for SSE but get the error message that steam_api64.dll file is missing and program needs to be reinstalled. Where do I get this file and how do I install it?

My general understanding of the dark face bug is that it results when you have a conflict between mods that change a character's appearance caused by a discrepancy between the plugin load order versus the mod or data load order. The mod with the desired look should be loaded last on both sides, after all other mods impacting the affected NPC. I found SSEEdit a useful tool to help figure this out because it identifies all mods that modify the character.
I've now found a character with dark face that isn't impacted by any of the NPC overhaul mods I've installed: Brina Merilis, the Imperial loyalist sister of the Jarl of Dawnstar. According to SSEEdit, there are no mods in my current setup that overhaul her appearance. So what's the likely culprit here?
-
Hmm... You got quite a large load order. I didn't see anything obviously wrong. But there are lots of mods changing towns and villages - and also some mods adding NPCs. I'm not an expert on mods like "JK's Skyrim" or "Settlements expanded", so I can't say for sure, if there are compatibility issues. But that's definitely something you should check.
Apart from that, mods adding buildings and - more important - NPCs will put some strain on your system. And you got a lot of this type of mods. So it may be an "overload" issue.
So, what could you do? IMHO the only way would be to go back to a stable load order and restart from there. Maybe you still know what mods you had installed before the CTDs started. If so, go back to that configuration. If you're unsure, start uninstalling the last mods you added, until the problem goes away.
I know this isn't particularly helpful right now, but when building up load orders like yours, you need to test a lot. Only add a few mods at a time, then test...
On a side note: I'm not sure if checking in xedit will tell you, if a master file needs to be cleaned. The normal way is using LOOT. If the master files need cleaning, LOOT will tell you. From my experience, LOOT is very reliable in this respect.
Algabar, thanks for taking a look at my load order! I was following the "Nordic Skyrim" load order. He tested it on his PC, which is powerful and up-to-date. My PC, which only has 2 GIGs VRAM and no SSD drive might be overwhelmed by an ambitious load order. I only wish I knew a bit more about what kind of mods tax what resources. For texture mods, I know enough to stick with "performance" versions of the mod or to stick with 2K or less. For other types of mods, I'm clueless.
I tried disabling some mods but had no success in fixing the problem. I ultimately decided to start another "instance" under MO2 and try to do a watered down version of the mod list with far fewer plugins. Hopefully, I've learned something along the way...
-
Could you post your load order please? Without knowing which mods you have installed, it's pure guessing...
Also please give us more information on the CTDs:
- Arre they related to certain taverns or do they happen when exiting ANY tavern?
- Are the CTDs limited to certain cities (which might indicate a problem with a city overhaul mod)?
- What happens if you enter and exit other buildings than taverns (e.g. shops, Dragonsreach, temples etc...)?

Update: I ran SSEDIT and found a CTD error caused by a mod being out of place. I made there correction and tried running game again. (I considered cleaning the Master files, but SSEDIT didn't indicate any problems that needed to be cleaned.)
For going to the Riverwood Tavern, before it CTDd during the "Change Screen." Now I get an infinite load screen. No crash, just a load screen that never ends.
Next time, I'll try some other scenario to see if the results are the same.
I then tried putting PC in Whiterun tavern. PC makes it out the door.....and then CTD.
Edit: Regarding Load Order, I try to match up the "data" side with plugin load order posted above.

Currently, I'm using the Alternate Start mods. When I start up the game, I go through the usual character creation & destination selection process. Lately, I've had my PC go local taverns. The moment the PC tries to exit the tavern, I see the change screen, but then soon after a CTD occurs.
My game is modded and I'm using MO2 as my mod manager. Any ideas as to what would cause this? Any utility to deal with CTDs? Or any maintence I need to do to files?
Yes, I'm upgraded to the latest SKSE.
-
I was having problems with my previous install, so I did a clean reinstall of SSE and switched to Mod Organizer 2. Now my Logitech Gamepad F310 controller no longer works with SSE. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Any setting that needs to be adjusted?
Update: Never mind; found game setting to put controller back on!

Currently, following a mod list and using Vortex as mod manager. Earlier had a problem with infinite loading screens after using Racemenu with Alternate Start. Resolved that problem using SSE Engine Fixes. Was able to start practice PTs with 235 mods installed. I finished the list and had exactly 250 mods installed. At that point, when trying to start PT, I would reach Racemenu Character Creator through Alternate Start but CTD would occur when trying to set PC gender to female. I have since begun to uninstall less important mods. I'm down to 241 but still get CTD. Are there any other tools aside from Engine Fixes or LOOT I should be using to deal with this problem?
-
I currently use Racemenu and Alternate Start. When I load up SSE, I get the normal and choose a scenario.....and then end up with infinite loading screens when I go to the bed to "start a new life." I didn't seem to have this problem when I used ECE instead of Racemenu. Any thoughts as to what's going wrong?
-
Especially on female Foresworn, the facial tatts are too much. Any way to get rid of them or lessen them? On various Nexus sites, I see pics of females in Foresworn armor without the tatts. Surely there has to be a mod out there to do that?
-
I just installed "Babes of Skyrim." Vortex simply put it in "default" category. Is there any special category for NPC overhauls? Or do I want to make it an "early loader?" Or a "late loader"?
-
Purple items generally means a missing texture.
When you said you deleted SS and redownloaded from steam, did you make sure to delete EVERYTHING left over manually as well after, otherwise there is a good chance there is remnants of mods, that would mess up with filepaths and stuff, which very well could indeed lead to the game thinking it got some textures missing.
So yeah I would say delete it again, and then go into your steam folder and make sure there is absolutely no remains of skyrim at all, and first then actually redownload it again
I not only deleted sse again, I also deleted vortex as well and was finally freed of the purple plague. I reinstalled vortex again and connected it to my clean reinstall of sse. The new vortex download gained access to all the old mods -- undeployed -- but so far hasn't foisted the purple plague on me again. Hopefully, by carefully reinstalling mods, I should avoid future problems or catch the culprit early and delete it.
-
After messing around with my mod configuration lled to a "purple food" problem, I decided ito get a fresh start. I deleted SSE then re-downloaded from Steam. Yet when running the game in a vanilla state (no mods), I noticed some things in the far off distance were purple, most notably the ruins of Bleak Falls Barrow. So, was my fresh download corrupted? Or am I simply noticing a common graphic glitch for the first time? Is there anything I can do?
-
You don't actually mention your saves. You have to roll back to a save from before you made the change.
Once you remove a mod using Vortex, there should be no traces of it left in your game directory.
Not true of your saves starting with when you installed the mod.
I thought of that, so I went back to Alternate Start to start another PT -- this time as a patron at a pub -- and found the same purple food problem. So I'm still confused as to what caused the problem.
-
I've been using Vortex to try to assemble an ideal mod list for Skyrim Special Edition. When the Racemenu character creator became available, I tried to switch from ECE to Racemenu. Unfortunately, Racemenu didn't work properly, so I switched back to ECE. I assumed this would put me back to where I was before. Instead, I find that many foods and ingredients are now purple. Could switching between character creators have caused this problem? When you muddle between using and not using a certain mod, does the experimentation alter the game files so that you can't go back to exactly what you had before?
What should I do? Clean re-install SSE? (I hope my descriptions are reasonably clear.)
-
in that case you're missing a needed dependent file, either a patch file or a master file for one of your mods
But why would changing from ECE to Racemenu cause the problem to emerge?
-
you're mistake was in removing / deleting a mod, you NEVER do this. It will break your saves EVERY single time. There "may" be a work around though.
start a new game, and as soon as you can try loading your most recent save
IF it loads, immediately save and quit the game
restart the game and the newest save "should" work
I wasn't trying to start a saved game after installing Racemenu. I was trying to do a whole new PT. Unfortunately, the infinite load screen intervened...
-
After switcing from ECE to Racemenu, I now get the infinite loading screen glitch. I use the Alternate Start mod. The opening screen with the talking statue of Mara starts up correctly. I'm able to use RACEMENU to select a racemenu preset. I undressed the PC to make sure body mod loaded properly. Then after selecting the desired start scenario, I get the ininfinite loading screen.. Is this a common Racemenu issue? What can I do besides switching back to ECE?
-
False alarm. After rebooting my system, everything works properly again as before.
Just curious, any idea how close we are to having Vortex complete its Alpha testing?
-
One of the things I liked about Vortex previously was that mods that overwrote the same files would be identified and grouped together; you could then click on the lightning bolt that would appear in the dependenceis column, and the mods overwriting the same files would appear and you would be able to order them accordingly. Now the red lightning bolt appears, but clicking on it doesn't allow you to order anything. What am I missing here?
-
Go to the SSE Forum, there are a number of posts dealing with this problem and how to solve it. SSE was updated and SKSE64 2_00_07 will not work with the updated SSE esm. They should have SKSE64 updated shortly.
Thanks. I dug up a YouTube vide that had a good workaround. Good to know that an SKSE update is coming.
-
I've been away from the computer for three weeks. I came back and find that Steam has updated my SSE to something beyond what the latest SKSE will work with. What do I do? I seem to remember some workaround.... Anything to prevent this in the future? What does Bethesda update anyhow?
-
There are stickies in the vortex forums that tell you this.
I know I'm missing something basic, but where would I go to see these stickies?
The latest stable (0.15.9) should be pretty stable, I'm not aware of any mayor issues with it.
Many thanks, Tannin!
-
I've been away from my computer for several weeks. When last I played, it was necessary to go back to an earlier version of Vortex because the then current version of Vortex was having problems with XP32 or XPMSE. Has Vortex been updated to address this problem?

Bump. I think this is a good idea for a mod. The elegant outfit you're supposed to model before Elisif is like every other elegant outfit rich NPCs wear all over Skyrim. At least a color change from puke green?
