  1. I just read about a new emerging technology; Artificial Photosynthesis. The name says it all. The ability to mimic the natural process of photosynthesis can provide us infinite amounts of carbon neutral fuel. As for other sources of energy, Wind and solar power have enough potential to power the entire world several times over plus we´re getting closer to achieving nuclear fusion, so there will be plenty of energy to burn in the future.

    Love

Thank you I study history, what did you expect from a guy who likes to dig up the past. Now I´m off to scan for more interesting threads to revive, tee hee!

    Love

Necroing threads? I didn´t realize that an open thread was dead. I started a new thread on love and it got deleted, so I checked if there were any old threads and found at least 2 and consequently posted in them. Is this some unwritten rule of forums that I should be aware of? To let an old thread die a dignified death and not post in it? If the thread is open and I´m interested in it, then I will post in it. If this "necroing" is bad, then why don´t the moderators delete all old threads after a certain time of inactivity? Someone should have read The Rules. -mm

    Life

    Life without money is meaningless.

    Love

Love is a set of chemical reactions in the brain that makes you addicted to someone. Another thread on this topic
  7. It´s time to bring this thread up to date. Obama won the last election, but will he get a second term, I hope he does.
  8. If the child was being taken to Europe, then there should be no problem, health care here is equivalent or better than in America, I think.

    The Soul

Good point Ghogiel, but presuming that as an immaterial being you could go anywhere in the Multiverse you like, then perhaps you could live out your eternity exploring the countless universes and alternate realities?
  10. Time for morrowwind has long since passed but this thread is still active. Let me say that many games have been part of my life and will continue to be. Whether gaming is "real life" or not remains to be debated, but what does the so called REAL LIFE have to offer? You work from 9.00 to 17.00 every day and after that you go home to your nagging wife and screaming kids and worry about paying the house mortgage and other bills and then you grow old and die. Why should we choose "real life" instead of gaming?

    The Soul

Hey! I found this old thread at the bottom of the list and since it was started by Dark0ne him/herself (is it a him or a her I´m not sure anymore) it cannot be banned. I guess this thread predates the ban on religious topics. Do I believe in souls? I do not know whether we have souls or not as there is no scientific evidence for it, BUT I HOPE that we do have one, because that is a requirement for afterlife and I hope there is an afterlife. In the end we will all find out about souls when we die and it would seem like such a waste if all that we are is lost forever in the process. Hence I CHOOSE to believe in souls and afterlife and Near Death Experiences give some subjective evidence of it, but whether to believe it or not is everyones own business. As for the difinition of a soul, I consider it to be everything that we are mentally. Our memories, thoughts, feelings etc. are all part of the soul. Oh and please dear religious fanatics, we don´t need your fanaticism here, so don´t hijack this thread.
  12. Everyone has the right to health care. It should not be a question of whether you have the money to pay for it or not.
  13. Assaulting and beating a child to death or serious injury is deeply wrong, but I don´t have a problem with parents using minor physical punishments on their kids to stress the seriousness of the violation and to deter further acts. Whether physical punishment is the best alternative depends on the case, but sometimes words may not be enough. I have no kids of my own and currently I don´t plan on having any so it is quite unlikely that I will ever have to deal with that dilemma.
  14. Some argue that in order to guarantee our survival as a species we MUST become a two planet civilization at the very least. So in our own solar system we have to get to Mars and eventually colonize and terraform it and that will take huge amounts of resources. Right now just getting to orbit takes a lot of effort. The first important step I believe will be the development of non-rocket space launch techniques like the Space Elevator which would allow us to send personnel and material to orbit much easier and allow for bigger construction projects there. For resources we could consider mining the asteroid belt just beyond Mars. So there´s plenty to do just in our own solar system, and when we are advanced enough to go to other star systems we will undoubtedly do that as well.
  15. Some will always resist new technologies, but eventually that inertia will be overcome and the technology will be adopted on a large scale. Personally I don´t see anything wrong with Stem Cells and if they can provide us with treatments to different conditions, then I´m all for it.

    Porn

I read somewhere that Viagra is useless as a recreational drug, your hard on won´t get any better if you are already healthy. Personally I don´t buy the theory that Porn affects a mans capability of achieving erection. At least I haven´t noticed any results other than reduced amount of lust due to aging, which is quite sad, I have never even had sex yet and I´m already starting to lose the capability of having it and healthy young women don´t want a limp dicked man and my idea of a good relationship is NOT two people having a platonic conversation.

    Love

Ok, so that´s why my topic of the same name got deleted, someone already had a topic about it. Personally I have been in love ONCE ( don´t count my first girlfriend as being in love, more like lust), and I don´t intend to repeat the mistake. Love that a parent feels for a child is good, but love between two adults is NOT necessarily good. I don´t like being attached to a person in ANY way, emotionally, fianacially, professionalyy or in any other way. I quite like being alone. I don´t have to put up with a nagging *censored* in my own house like countless other hapless men have to (and some of them even like having those "golden chains" in their fingers, called wedding rings) Having little experience in REAL relationships, I am not really qualified to debate the issue, but I know what love is and I don´t like it. It ties a person to another and robs them of their individuality. Women will inevitably attempt and change their partner to something they like and men are expected to follow along as "women know best" when it comes to relationships. Personally I am NOT about to change any part of myself for any lady and I discourage other men from giving in to their girlfriends/wives demands.
  18. You want proof that Russia is a threat to Finland? Okay, look at history, how many times have we fought the Russians? Today two of Russias important strategic centers lie on the borders of Finland; St. Petersburg (remember that the WInter War was about the security of Leningrad) and Murmansk in the North. St. Petersburg is the second most important city in all of Russia after Moscow and Murmansk is the only year-round Ice-free port the Russians have and a primary Naval base for their Northern Fleet. This has led to the fact that both the St. Petersburg military district and the Murmansk area are heavily garrisoned with troops and materiel. Russia maintains overwhelmingly superior forces right next to our borders and you are perhaps suggesting that we trust the Russian democratic government (if it can be called a democracy) and its goodwill to protect our safety? I think not, we´ve seen what happens to those who trust in peace and international institutions as the guarantors of that peace. I am aware of the fact that NATO is a defensive alliance and not an offensive one, but in the case of war, would NATO rather fight on Russian soil or on the soil of some EU country? Every belligerent nation will try to push the fight to the territory of the enemy to avoid casualties and damage on their own soil. I too would rather fight the Russians on Karelian soil, rather than allow the Russians to freely penetrate deeply into Finland, which would result in casualties and damage to Finnish property, but alas, our forces are geared purely for a defensive role and plans call for defense on Finnish soil, resulting in inevitable damage to our infrastructure and property. Russians too are probably only too eager to avoid the kind of damage to Russian property that was inflicted in WW-2 by the Germans. That´s why the Russian doctrine was an offensive one during the Cold War and I believe the Russians would attempt to push the fight to the territory of the EU and NATO in any potential conflict. Also the question is, who has the resources to go on the offensive? Russia maintains the strongest conventional forces in Europe, so it is questionable if NATO could even stop the Russians without using tactical nuclear weapons, which would lead to a likely escalation to a strategic nuclear exchange. To counter the Russian supremacy in conventional forces NATO countries would have to increase their defense budgets considerably and currently there seems to be no will to do that. So NATO is left with the hope of trying to counter Russian superiority with Air Power and superior technology or prepare to use nukes and the latter option is out of the question, so which one will win, Russian superiority in numbers or superior NATO air power and technology?
  19. There are some Finns who think like me and wish for the return of Karelia and the lost territories and it is good that we don´t just forget what happened. Most Finns though do not want a war of any sort and some are still cowering in fear of angering the Russians and hence opposing our membership in NATO, although the public opinion may be shifting to favor it. Some of the Presidential candidates in next years election have spoken for NATO membership in the past, although they are keeping their voices down for the moment in fear of alienating voters who do not support NATO membership. Finland would not have a snowballs chance in Hell as an aggressor against Russia, so starting a war with them is quite out of the question. Russia however remains a threat, not only to Finland, but to Europe and I would hate to see the EU being unprepared to fight Russia because all of NATO´s military assets have been geared towards overseas expeditions in distant lands such as Afghanistan. NATO was created to protect Europe and not to fight overseas wars and especially not to further American interests on the global arena.
  20. So it´s the Shadow virus (from Babylon 5) that we need to worry about. A virus engineered by a species far more ancient than ours.
  21. The Saw series is a good one.
  22. Ok, I got sick and tired of running into copyright issues with using 3d models, so I´ve decided to make some of my own. I´m still a noob in 3d modeling, but hopefully I will improve with time and I will release all my models for use freely. You don´t need to ask me permission to use my models, you have it automatically, just credit me as a contributor to your mod. So, the licence I give you is similar to that used in literacy in the academic world. You can use my models freely as long as you credit me as the original author. I also give you the freedom to modify my models in any way you like, in fact you may have to work on the models in order to use them in games as they are not perfect. You can also distribute my models freely. You may NOT sell my models on Turbosquid for your own profit, not that you would get anything for them anyways. Some or all of my models may need textures, so do that part yourself as I am not too skilled in texturing yet. Here´s the first model that I will publish: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45299890/pill-jar.blend It is a pill jar. Made of plastic, usually white. Just give it a white plastic texture and put on any logo of a pharmaceutical company and you will have a new container to use for medications for example in FNV. I am working on some house models, so in the future I might release a few Nordic style modern house models. All my models are 100% made by me, they´re not ports from anywhere, as you can see from the quality. Cheers!

    Inheritance

The question is Werne, CAN you give everything to charity? It depends on what kind of inheritance laws your country has. If your laws are like those in Finland you cannot give everything to charity if you have legal heirs, such as parents, siblings, uncles or aunts etc.
  24. Ok, this thread is about the sci-fi concept of Alien Invasion. What´s your favorite style of attack upon humanity?
  25. Oh, but here´s a piece of information: Suicide is NOT illegal in the UK, not since 1961 and the passing of the Suicide Act. Look it up in Wikipedia. So we should be allowed to debate suicide on these forums. By the way, I congratulate the British on giving their citizens the right to decide over their own lives. As for me, my suicidal tendencies are well known to the local authorities after the university called the mental health authorities over a couple of essays I wrote. However, since I am not going to do anything to myself before my parents are dead, which should take some 10 to 20 years, the authorities are quite content, but what happens after those years have passed is up to me and if I choose to end it all, there is very little the authorities can do. Only a total change in my personal thinking and logic could prevent that unfortunate outcome from happening and so far I see no reason to change my mind. I see that someone voted that the goal of the penal system is to make the life of the criminals a living hell? I will refrain from calling that individual a sadist as that would be a personal insult, but I think that losing your freedom is punishment enough. Maybe some would like the prisoners to be waterboarded or put to the rack or some other form of torture like in medieval times or in Guantanamo Bay?
