  1. Hey everyone, I think this thread is filled with different kinds of "shadow flickering" issues. I'd like to limit this thread to the original problem where all shadow completely turn OFF in the game when the character moves or when the camera (in 3rd person) moves. I'm posting my video again below so you can see exactly what I'm talking about: https://i.imgur.com/pHlKqQI.mp4 Once I completely excluded ALL my game files from antivirus and changed my backups to run only once nightly (instead of continuously) I have not had a single shadow "flicker" problem. It has been weeks without a single problem.
  2. A year and half later no replies? Same thing is happening to me. Looking for a fix. Tried changing the game from windowed fullscreen (which I'm using due to resharder) to plain fullscreen but made no difference. EDIT: To get around this, try the following: 1. Change the graphics to LOW. 2. Turn on VSync in your video settings for the game. 3. Start the game from Geforce Experience. Doing number 3 above fixed it for me, maybe it was a mod I'm using in Frosty Manager. Once I'm through with the Nexus quests I'll go back to starting the game via Frosty so that I can use my mods.
  3. Great write up! Glad someone else is looking into it. I'll think for a while about what you wrote and maybe I can find a program that will monitor open files and directories so that I can prove things one way or the other. And I'll see if I can actually reproduce the problem consistently too. I paused my backups and that seemed to fix it for me, but every now and then it would still happen. That might be because the backup program is still monitoring which files it has to back up and still is putting some kind of read lock on the files even though it's not backing them up. The only way to really be sure is to completely shut the back up down by stopping its service and disabling the service and then rebooting the machine. I haven't come that far yet.
  4. Forgive me for responding to such an old thread, but this is what came up in my google search so I thought I'd give some more info to people. I just installed all 3 bird mods and started having this same lip movement bug. After some experimentation I found that disabling bird spawns in cities in the MCM menu for Birds of Skyrim, then killing all the spawned birds took care of the problem. So you either have to live with the bug or experiment with the max number of birds and spawn points in areas. And maybe increase the number of max actors in your Wrye Bash script. Changing the max active actors in your bash script tweaks probably won't help because mine is set to 50 and that didn't help me.
  5. Hey everybody, I *THINK* I've found the final solution, at least one that applies to my situation. If you look through all my posts in this thread you'll see that I have tried a LOT of things. So... For me the problem occurs when anything that the game uses is being accessed by the Windows operating system for any reason. In my case, it's my backups. I'm using a cloud-based backup service (SpiderOAK) and I have it set to back up everything in my mod list and game directory/subdirs dynamically (i.e. immediately when anything changes). After downloading a big mod (e.g. 500MB+) and then going into the game, I get the shadow flickering problem. I then exit the game and then I verify that the backup app is indeed backing up those new game files. If you are having consistent problems with the shadow flickering problem, then try completely disabling anything that might touch (even in READ mode) a file used by your game. That includes disabling (temporarily) your antivirus, backups, etc... ANYTHING that might be reading a file that the game uses AT ALL. See if that solves the problem for you. I finally did a short video of the shadow flickering problem and linked it below; notice that every time I move it removes the sun and shadows, and if I move the camera in 3rd person it removes them too: https://i.imgur.com/pHlKqQI.mp4
  6. No it's not caused by the limited light bug in the Skyrim engine. When it happens to me, all shadows disappear in the game. This is outside not inside. In other words it is as though the sun gets turned off completely everywhere when I move, then comes back on when I stop.
  7. So the latest thing I'm trying is to exclude all of the temporary and caching files that are dynamically built and used in the game from my antivirus and my backups. My reasoning is that maybe the OS is locking those files in a way that's conflicting with the game or the ENB.
  8. Well, so much for the shader cache idea. The flickering has come back, so I tried also turning it off in the Nvidia settings and it still happens. Sigh. So I'm turning the shader cache options back on.
  9. I recently turned off shader cache in my ENB and so far that seems to be working. That change also solved a blue tint I was getting in my shadows. If the problem comes back I'll also try turning the shader cache off in my nVidia settings as you suggest. Thanks for the response.
  10. Same thing just started happening to me yesterday. I've just started testing a new build and I'm incrementally installing about 5 mods at a time and then testing them, sometimes starting a new game each time depending on the nature of the mods. I have a 2070 super video card and ENB loaded (no presets yet, but I plan to use Re-Engaged). No weather or lighting mods installed either, though I plan to use Obsidian and ELFX. When the problem happens, ALL shadows disappear when I move my character or even look around in 1st person or in 3rd person mode. Usually an exit to the desktop and restart of Skyrim fixes it. I haven't had to reboot the whole PC yet because I'm still loading mods and testing. I just upgraded the video driver and turned off Ambient Occlusion in Bethini per other's suggestions. My first test after that showed no problem, but it's been hit or miss (completely random) up to this point. I do have Improved Camera Beta 4 loaded in case that's a common factor. Also, when I turn off ENB in the game using SHIFT-F12 the problem is still there. Only a restart of the game fixes it. A reload of a save doesn't fix it.
  11. I've never liked the idea of the Standing Stones: Anyone can touch them and suddenly gain magical powers. Yeah I know NPCs don't actually use them, but there's nothing preventing them from using them, at least lore wise. The fact that NPCs don't use them doesn't make sense.Since the stones give such increased power/abilities/benefits, why aren't soldiers guarding them? Why don't bandits camp around them and force people to pay for the privilege of using them? The whole economics of the stones is overlooked.I don't remember any backstory to these stones when playing through the game. But I didn't read all the books (yawn) or look through all the online wikis (DOUBLE YAWN) to see if there was.I've looked around for quest mods that disable all the stones until you've procured some ability or some rare artifact, or something that would "unlock" the stones for you, but didn't find anything. I think it would be best if the standing stones just outright KILLED you if you weren't worthy or hadn't achieved some quest objective.So... the next best thing I've decided to do is use this mod and modify its changes to drastically reduce the effects: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/4688
  12. No, loose files get loaded AFTER BSAs regardless of the load order. If there is a conflict between loose files, the last ones loaded "win" (get priority). So what about conflicts between files in a BSA and loose files? Do the loose files always win since they load last?
  13. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! So excited about this mod! I am a hunter survivalist and I never knew about this mod until now. I'm going to also make my own personal patch for RND.
  14. Wow I didn't know that about the requirement for ESPs with BSAs. That's why I always see directions for unpacking BSAs after deleting dummy ESPs.
  15. I'm getting back into modding after a 4 year hiatus. After doing some research on mod order and BSAs I came to the following conclusion, but I want to be sure I'm correct. Can someone comment on the accuracy of what I've written below? ============= If the files are in a BSA, the BSA loads at the same time as its corresponding ESP. If the files are loose, they load in the order that the mod is listed in your mod organizer. Now for an example... Let's say you have 2 mods with these contents: MOD1: 1.esp, 1.bsa MOD2: 2.esp, 2.bsa Then let's suppose that LOOT sorts the plugins like this: 2.esp 1.esp Even though the mods in your mod organizer are listed with MOD1 first then MOD2 second, the plugins are NOT loaded that way! And since BSAs are loaded when their corresponding ESP files are loaded, it means the files in the BSAs would be loaded in this order: 2.bsa 1.bsa Hence, if 2.bsa had meshes, textures, scripts, etc. that conflicted with 1.bsa, THEY WOULD BE OVERWRITTEN BY 1.bsa, even though the mod in your mod organizer has MOD1 listed first (i.e. with lower priority). But let's say you extracted the contents like this: MOD1: 1.esp, loose files for MOD1 MOD2: 2.esp, loose files for MOD2 LOOT would still load the plugins in this order: 2.esp 1.esp But the loose files would be loaded in a different order like this: loose files for MOD1 loose files for MOD2 Which is the OPPOSITE LOAD ORDER THAN BEFORE. And instead of the files in MOD1 being the winners, the files in MOD2 are the winners. This is why it's generally a good idea to have the mods in your mod organizer ordered in the same way LOOT organizes their plugins.
  16. I came here to let the Nexus admins know that I absolutely *LOVE* the new notification system!!! What a pleasant surprise to find this after I came back from vacation after a month. THANK YOU!!! In terms of clearing off the notification, I really like that fact that the notifications stay visible until you click the x to remove them unlike the old system where all notifications regarding comments disappeared if you clicked on the first one. This is REALLY IMPORTANT since I often check the status of mods from multiple PCs including my phone. I often check them on my phone and look at the new changes, but I don't want them to disappear until I've had the chance to upgrade them (if necessary) on my main gaming PC.
  17. I use Avast, it's free and works great. It's prevented a lot of viruses, I know that because it pops up a message when it prevents something. Works great with Skyrim.
  18. ...and so it begins... another unsuspecting Skyrim player to get sucked down the hole of addictive Skyrim modding, never to be seen again... Here are some general rules about modding: 1. Don't remove mods once you start a playthrough. It's generally ok to add mods if you're careful and you know what you're doing. 2. Research each mod carefully to be sure it's not going to conflict with other mods. Apply patches as necessary for mod compatibility. 3. Learn the difference between mod order and plugin order. Use BOSS to sort your plugin order. 4. Use Mod Organizer to add/manage your mods if possible, even though it has a steeper learning curve than NMM. 5. If you add mods that create new items in the game, use Wrye Bash to create a "Bashed Patch" that will prevent conflicts between the items. 6. Clean your mods using TES5Edit where needed. 7. Have fun. :) You mentioned SkyRe... Be aware that SkyRe is considered an "overhaul" mod which means it make many sweeping changes to Skyrim. Hence it will be less compatible with other mods since other mods can try to change the same things in the game and therefore conflict with SkyRe. But if SkyRe's changes look good to you then by all means use it. It's got a great number of devoted followers who would never play without it. Here's a general suggestion: Use the advanced search features in http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/ to sort by the most endorsed mods. Those are probably the ones to start considering first. Good luck!
  19. I use SKYUI and unfortunately the search features are lost if you use a custom map like Warburg's paper map mod.
  20. If you have followers like Vilja that teleport to you when they get too far away, that can cause it too. I know for Vilja you can turn the teleport off which makes her just catch up to you. Of course then if she gets stuck you have to go find her...
  21. I just saw the following thread, so I downloaded the DLL and used it for about an hour. No problems yet. Would like to see others comment on this! http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1vjcuw/ctdfreeze_memory_fixes_this_guy_pretty_much/
  22. Please excuse my ignorance, but I didn't even realize that one could "become a member" and help to support this site. I really apologize for that, I'm sure it was probably in my face all the time and I missed it. But maybe you should consider some way to advertise that a little better, and offer perks for full membership (I'm sure there are ones already?). I don't know if a popup now and then would help; I know people hate that but sometimes it's needed. Anyway, after posting this I'll go see what it takes to become a member. *EDIT* Ok so I just became a Premium Member for Life. I'm really glad to help this site out. God bless you guys for the work you do, you make life really fun. :-)
  23. Yes I wondered what (is) going on with the site. It's up and down several times daily. But I'm really thankful for what you guys are doing! Hang in there, and please don't let any complaints bother you. Those of us who use the site daily know that you guys have made it possible for us to even do the modding we do. THANK YOU!!!!!!
  24. I've had a few CTDs at times when I think an autosave kicked in, so I've turned off all autosaves "just in case". Check Neovalen's guides (links in my post above): He tells users to turn off all autosaves to avoid CTDs. I've also installed Dynamic TimeScale (EXCELLENT mod for changing the timescale based on where you are), and it has a lot of autosave features. I turned them ALL off in that mod.
  25. @chanchan05 Awesome answer! In my last playthrough i did tons of grinding in order to get my smithing, enchanting, and alchemy to 100 so that I could create the best gear. For what? So I could truly one-hit dragons? What's the fun in that? There's a much easier way to become godlike... ~ tgm <enter> ~ DONE If you don't like grinding then just do that instead.
