  1. Arissa the Wandering Rogue mod by Chesko will do #2 & #3, if someone needs an example of these behaviors. Serana (vanilla) seems to do #1, to some extent - "sandboxing", interacting with her surroundings. #5 would be very useful, since vanilla follower AI tends to have fighter class followers charge the enemy, usually before the character gets a chance to react. If your character tries to use missile fire or spells, followers tend to get in the way.

  2. I use the Less Sexy Armor Redux mod, which take the female versions of most vanilla armors and makes them more male-looking, while fitting the more slender female form. This makes the armor look more practical looking and reduces frostbite.

  3. The excellent healer follower mod Cerwiden does this to some extent, but that feature is a bit buggy in my game (the rest of her features work quite well). Sometimes she runs around in battle in her underwear, but maybe she is a berserker? I am not a modder, but Cerwiden is the only mod I know of that can change outfits, so I assume it would not be an easy mod to create.

  4. This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but the Armor Padding Kits mod by crazyjoe2K offers a solution to enhancing player character’s armor with a variety (cloth, leather, chainmail, etc.) of craft-able “under armors”. Some of the variations are enchanted/enchantable. The under-armor counts as clothes (takes up the clothing slot) but is unfortunately not visible. The idea of under-armor padding is realistic, since quilted gambesons were actually worn under armor. The biggest drawback I have found is that if your character provides his/her followers with armor padding, they do not appear to recognize the padding and do not equip it.

  5. The Mercy mod sounds intriguing. A step beyond that would be a mod that made the bad guy NPCs flee for their lives or try to hide when confronted by your chacacter (and followers) when they are much more powerful than the baddies. I am not sure, in game terms, how the NPCs would "know" the relative capabilties or the player character and followers, though. It is sheer suicide when a lone low-level thief or assassin tries to attack my well-armed and armored character, especially when 2 or more comparably powerful followers are also present.

  6. I neglected to mention the ecellent Auroa and Twilight Followers mod by VRDaphni. They are gorgeous Half-Elf/ Half-Nord Spellswords with custom voices and a small mini-quest. Their appearance and outfits are configurable, and they have custom combat AI - they are handy in a fight. Your character does not have do anything special to get them to follow, since part of their mini-quest is that they had a vision that they should follow your character (they are waiting for you).

  7. I use the excellent Dragon Combat Overhaul (DCO) mod by Appolodown, but it does not appear to address the "distracted dragon" syndrome you describe. The Main Quest's initial dragon battle at Whiterun's West Tower lasted around 3 in-game hours. As the dragon terrorized the countryside with flame, his health eventually started to get low from the Whiterun guards and my character's arrows, then the dragon called for backup and 2 of his buddies came swooping down - my chacter died once, and he was trying to use the tower as cover. If you use DCO, you may be thankful for easily distracted dragons - it gives your chacater a chance to live to fight another day...

  8. For custom voiced & AI, goodie female followers, how about Cerwiden? She's a healer/destruction spellsword with a sweet personality, tons of dialogue, an elaborate quest line involving other NPCs, and is extremely configurable. Some of her comments come off as a bit immature sometimes (appropriate for a young newbie priestess), but she is powerful and useful.

You discounted Arissa the Wander Rogue mod previously, but she is one of the best custom AI/custom voiced follower mods on the Nexus. If your character spends time with her, she has quite a back story, lots of unique dialogue, and is fairly moral (your character can get on her bad side for murdering innocent NPCs, for instance). Like Ceridwen, she has an elaborate system that determines how much she likes your character at any point in time. If you manage to get on her good side, she comes in handy if your non-thief character needs to have locks picked, and she is skilled with sword and bow (ranger style).

  9. My games have female NPC followers with vanilla frames, as well as UNP or CBEE frames (from standalone follower mods). I use Less Sexy Armor Redux mod by JZBai, which replaces vanilla female armors with male-looking versions that fit female frames - I have not seen any clipping or issues with the more covering kinds of armors, even though I use 3 different types of female frames. For ranger type females, I use Grace Darkling's Ranger Armor mod, with no clipping or issues on any of the 3 different female frames. From what I have read on these forums, issues with using armors not specifically designed for a particular type of body frame seem to occur with the skimpy armor types where a lot of skin is exposed, and not so much for armors that cover the skin. What I am saying is that you may be able to use mods like Less Sexy Armor Redux and Grace Drakling's Ranger Armor on Sevenbase frames without issues, at least for the armors that cover the skin. It would be worth a try.

  10. For Viking era swords, InsanitySorrow has mods called The Thegn and The Stamford. For Viking style round shields, Insanitys Shields mod adds 57 varieties of those to the game. I think that one big omission from vanilla Skyrim's Nordic setting is spears. There are a few mods that add spears to the game, but only Skyrim Spears by JeffreyXiong1 mentions adding apprioriate animations "Has A Stabbing Animation for the spears. (Slimiar to the staff)", but that nods counts it as a 1 handed weapon.

  11. I have been using NorseViking Armor II by Croc, which contains some passable chainmail hauberks and Viking era helments. The Immersive Armors mod previously mentioned contains some chainmail hauberks that look like the ones in NorseViking Armor II, but these may not be as high-res as some folks are looking for. Immersive Armors also adds several shields, including Viking style round shields. One plus for Immersive Armors is that it adds it's armors, helmets, and shields to the leveled lists, so your character can encounter them in game on bandits, etc.

I have recently seen (but not yet downloaded) the new Simple Hauberk mod and Early-Middleages Helmets pack by VAultMaN30 that look promising for European Dark Ages and Early Middle Ages armors and helmets with a more detailed chainmail texture - I will be checking those out.

For fans of the History Channel's Vikings TV series, I have seen follower mods from MoFoPSN for some of the major characters like Ragnar Lodbrok and Lagertha - these appear to come with some Viking style gear.

Someone even created a Gokstad Sailable Ship and Portable Player Home mod.

There are a few Viking style mods for Skyrim here on the Nexus, and new Viking/Dark Ages stuff seems to be coming out every once in a while. My thanks to the many talented modders who supply their creations to us for free and keep Skyrim alive!

  12. In addition to all the above, I like stand-alone armor that does not replace the vanilla armors. I also like them to be forge-craftable. If it is the sort of armor that others could have (not a unique set), it is good if it can appear in the leveled lists, so you can come across others wearing the armor.

I prefer more historical Medieval-ish armors, such as some of the Witcher 2 or LOTR-style armor mods, even if they are not so lore friendly - but that is a matter of personal taste. I also like the armor to not be overpowered/god-like, maxxing out with Steel Plate stats and requiring the Advanced Armors perk, tops. For the ladies, I prefer practical armor to many of the skimpy Frazetta-style outfits that pass for armor here on the Nexus (but I may be outnumbered).

    Good discussion!

  13. I second the motion for someone to please create an eleven spellsword follower based on her. There are some other shots and video where it is more obvious that she's an elf. In the pic supplied, the green magic glow just makes her face look green, even when it isn't green.

  14. I like this idea, but it would be good to have it configurable. I play different characters who have different pay arrangements with their followers. For my characters who do split loot, it is tedious to handle. For example:

    • Keep the useful items and distribute them amongst the followers based on who can make best use of the item, then sell the non-usable loot and share the proceeds equally
    • No loot sharing, but equip followers as you please
    • Payment up front (like hiring a mercenary)
    • Some combo of above, like maybe hire for 1000 Gold, + some form of loot sharing

Vanilla Skyrim (and some of the NPC mods) have mercenaries - the going rate seems to be 500 Gold, up front. Perhaps the mod could make almost all followers hireable for 500 Gold (except the Housecarls, who do it out of duty)? Maybe the mod could allow for configurable mercenary fees, perhaps based on the NPC’s level? Still, there may be some potential NPCs who would willingly follow the Dragonborn for free, looking for adventure, and others may still be willing to tag along just for food, lodging, and equipment.

  15. I have not seen a mod like that, but the Climates of Tamriel mod has a variety of optional dungeon lighting settings, where the darker settings (such as "Hazardous") make torches, lanterns, or seeing in the dark a necessity. It does not extinguish a dungeon's torches or braziers that happen to be lit, though.

  16. I've tried the Organized Bandits in Skyrim (OBIS) mod, which sounded promising, but I got CTDs on startup - maybe I have too many mods? I also tried the Gangs of Skyrim mod, but found the bandit gangs way too over-powered for my 17th level character and his 4 followers.

I reccommend the excellent Immersive Patrols mod, which "Adds fully functional, scheduled patrols of almost every major faction across all DLCs, including Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Imperials, Dawnguard, Travelers, Merchants, Bandits, Skaal, Redoran, Reavers and Rieklings without cluttering the world. Now also includes Warzones like battles with fort capture behavior." After installing the mod, my character was passing through Rorikstead when a bandit raid swooped out of the hills - I'd never seen that happen before. If you play either side in the Civil War questline, or even if your neutral, the included Civil War patrols and battles make the conflict seem more like a real war.

  17. I tried the Organized Bandits of Skyrim (OBIS) mod, but got CTDs when I tried to start the game with this mod installed. The mods sounds like it brings organization and increased variety to the bandits, making them more of a force to be reckoned with. I have also tried the Gangs of Skyrim GOS) mod, which basically also brings organized bandit gangs, but they were too powerful for my 17th level knight character and his 4 17th level followers -- I assume you would need to have a very high level character and an army, or go into god mode to survive that one.
