There is a certain version of the niftools plugin you're supposed to use which is mentioned in on of the first of Nightasy's tutorials. The issue you're mentioning is typical of trying to use a later version. -

Nightasy's tutorials do cover this but they teach you to use 3DS Max or Maya. I think the 3DS mask section starts on 42 - Shaping The Mask, Testing.
