Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10
chambcra replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
Wow, the video blew me away. The animation of climbing the steep rocks and stepping over a bridge is amazing. It doesn't look like the player controls it though. It was the only question that wasn't answered on youtube. It's pretty amazing if it drives itself but might get old after a while just riding. That mod is a good argument for playing the original. The only mod I've used is the map I mentioned which I think is the best for detail and location accuracy. I would think Morroblivion improved would work but with my triple screens the fps in Balmore is just adequate as it is. I would like to find some quest mods and I haven't searched the Nexus yet. -

With the strider overhaul the strider mount works great. You might have to stick to the main roads because it collides with rocks the same as a horse and it doesn't jump. It walks and runs. There is just one rideable strider at Balmora. -

No problem, actually you were right, there was . . . I tried the test by qwertyasdfgh and got a hard crash but maybe you need the entire overhaul with it. Thanks for the downloads. I'll give it another try. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or I'm in the wrong place but the only way I can find anything for Morroblivion is by searching the forums at morroblivion.com and with the entire site being really slow it's a long grind. I see references that Eloth has made a rideable silt strider but I can't find it. There is a cool video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSRj6JsBNhs http://www.mediafire.com/file/nchy2wcgl2qh42q/MorrobMountableStriderTestVersion.7z/file Thanks -

"Believe it or not, at Morroblivion.com there was an actual mod that allowed for mountable Silt Striders (like a horse), and had the animations for it ." When you say "was" does that mean it's no longer available? The only thing I could find is a test mod by qwertyasdfgh and it's supposed to have some problems. I see a couple other mentions but can't find a download link. I have a hard time navigating that site. Thanks -
Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10
chambcra replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
Okay, so that would partially explain it but still the number of really smart people modding these old games is something I really appreciate. It seems like you would almost have to be a Bethesda or Gamebryo software engineer to write the port script. Yeah, so many projects and so little time. I was thinking what would be cool in Oblivion is the Silt Strider and do it so it's a horse mount hack with a complete set of animations so you can ride it just like a Mech Warrior. Since I had to install the complete Morrwind GOTY, to extract the morroblivion.esm, I fired it up with an old save game from way back and in ways it might be better to replay the original. I don't remember seeing any sparks falling out of the ceiling in Sotha Sil in Morroblivion. -
Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10

I'm using V065 and this is the first time I've played it so I don't know about V064. I have: Morrowind_ob.esm Morrowind_ob.esp Morrowind_ob - Chargen and Transport Mod.esp Morrowind_ob - Conversation.esp and New Map v1_1-40283-1-1 is the map I liked the best after trying a couple. I don't remember why but I chose to not add your last three items. It seems an incredible piece of work to me. If those guys had to do all the modeling from scratch they are some real troopers! And, if you look in the CS you might notice there must be a million NPC's. How did they do it? It was working perfect for a long time but I've almost completed everything and I started getting crashes so I added Engine Bug Fixes and that is working good. There's almost no traffic at Morroblivion.com but you can still get an answer if you have a serious problem. I'm not sure why I keep plugging along with these quests that are mostly step and fetch and kill somebody (that can be worked around) but there is a comical element to a lot of it and it's a good lore refresher course. I'm reluctant to leave because once I uninstall it I probably won't ever be back. I had a number of quest bugs but those are easy to work around. -

The same sort of micro pauses that happen only right after startup in stock Oblivion keep occurring continually in Morroblivion. On Solstheim is the worst at roughly every 6 seconds when moving outside at a steady good speed. On the win10 computer this looks exactly the same as the win7 computer. This test gave me the idea to give OSR another try with this particular problem unique to Morroblivion. It was fixed completely on the win7 game computer by OSR. On the win10 work computer I saw no difference with OSR and within less than a minute it froze. Alt-Tab didn't work. Ctrl-Alt-Delete gave me the option to power off but the task master didn't work. -

To clarify it's only a comment I've seen from someone else about the stuttering. I've only used this win10 machine for mod work. I see now it was Moksha8088 who mentioned the dual boot so if you have to pick one or the other that would be tough. If the new hardware really requires win10 that would be the only reason I would go to it. I absolutely hate the mandatory updates and spying. It's like you don't really own your computer, you are only leasing it from MS when they retain the right to install anything they want anytime. I've tried OSR and I can't detect that it does anything for me but maybe I don't get stuttering per se. I only get a micro pause or two when I first start the game or go into a new land area so it seems like it's just a texture loading thing. I'm currently playing Morroblivion and it's pretty bad with these micro pauses so in the next couple days I'll try a test on the win10 comp and see if It's better or not. -
Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10
chambcra replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
I swore I would never use win10 because of the required hooks into the internet and mandatory updates. I wanted to update the hardware for my XP work computer and found a deal on Craig's list that had a legit fresh install of win10 that I planned to replace with XP. Before I wiped the disk I thought I would check out win10 and I have to admit it's not that bad. It doesn't recognize old dvd copy protection disks but for oblivion I copied the dvd install disk to a flash and it installed. I have Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim installed and for now it's working as a replacement for my XP work computer. If you're planning on a dual boot anyway why not try win10 first and see how it goes? I've seen some comments that win10 is better than win7 like no stutter, ctrl-alt-delete works when win7 needs a forced power down, alt-tab works, etc. I see the new graphic cards require win10 so I may be forced to use it on the game machine some day. I keep the ethernet cable unplugged and it still works! -
How to setstage when book is closed instead of opened
chambcra replied to chambcra's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Thanks HeyYou. Sorry I missed this. You may have the better way. What I thought was working turns out be triggered when any book is opened and closed. Back to the drawing board. Thanks D'oh - all I needed to do is use the flag variable in an onequip block instead of the menu block -

How to setstage when book is closed instead of opened
chambcra replied to chambcra's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Why didn't I think of that. Thanks a lot Pellape that does the trick. Goes to show you how much of a noob I am. This must be what KatsAwful was talking about with a flag. Thanks to you too KatsAwful. I just changed my book script in the menu block to set the variable instead of the stage. Just one more question. In this case the quest completes so I'm assuming the quest script will never run again so I don't have to worry about the setstage line running repeatedly everytime the script runs? Right? If the quest didn't complete I would want to add another condition like: If ( FlagVariable == 1 && anotherDoOnce == 0 ) Setstage TheQuest Stage set anotherDoOnce to 1 endif Right? Thanks -

I think that's the first thing I tried and hitting the exit button isn't the same as un_equipp. Thanks, I'll keep looking. -
How to setstage when book is closed instead of opened
chambcra replied to chambcra's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Thanks for the replies. I'm just trying to make something happen when the book closes instead of when it opens. Setting a stage just happens to be the thing I want to happen. It could be anything. This works fine except it happens immediately when the book is opened. I want the quest window to pop up right after the book is closed instead of popping up on top of the book. Sorry if I'm not being clear. scn a1ccBookScript short doOnce begin MenuMode 1026 if doOnce == 0 setStage a1ccZepplinQuest 20 set doOnce to 1 endif end I don't know anything about setting a flag. Still a noob after all these years. I was wondering if while in the menu mode you can detect the button press (exit button). Maybe I can assume it's button index 1. I could just start trying stuff but I thought this might be something that is so commonly done someone would know off the top of their head the exact script. I think I've seen it work this way all the time in lots of mods but maybe I'm mistaken. I'm the kind of noob that tries to find an example and I can't find one on this. Thanks -
Vilja reset her inventory
chambcra replied to perrochanchoQliaoxd's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
You should post this to the Vilja mod itself. https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/28977?tab=posts&BH=0 cdcooley has answers sometimes. You could always try the reset option when you cast the Start Combat Spell on Vilja. Something isn't right. That has never happened to me.- 1 reply

.BSA Files, should I use them? & Game performance?
chambcra replied to MotokoKHammond's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
Okay, sounds good. Thanks -
Okay, I got it, thanks a lot. So that's where my tracked stuff is at and it does work.

Okay, I see I need to use some filters on the bell. I see I can select "Your Content" or "Content you follow" but not both at the same time and maybe that's only for the current session or does it apply to what goes onto the bell continually? I try to type oblivion into the Games and the Include drop down boxes but it doesn't stick. I'm not sure if I can figure the bell out by trial and error. I can't find the "Tracked Content Updates" tab. I have to admit I'm a bit lame about how Nexus works. I've tried tracking several mods and it's never worked as far as I can tell. Thanks

.BSA Files, should I use them? & Game performance?
chambcra replied to MotokoKHammond's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
I didn't even think about Steam, GoG, GOTY or anything else. I need to say now that everything I've said only applies and has been tested on a bargain bin version that was packaged together with Bioshock. @KatsAwful If "SkyBSA removes the date precedence outright" then what sort of precedence is there? Something has to come out on top. Right? It was this mod (https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/49652?tab=posts&BH=0) that got me thinking about the decompressing thing. I have repacked the meshes bsa without compression now. I can always imagine that it's working better. The new Textures bsa is slightly over 2 GB but I think that limit is probably actually 2,147,483,648, similar to the way 1 K is really 1024 as far as a computer is concerned. -
.BSA Files, should I use them? & Game performance?
chambcra replied to MotokoKHammond's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
What happens if you use a utility like File Date Changer to change your repacked uncompressed Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa to year 2006? Then the loose file goes back to taking precedence. This is without SkyBsa installed. Somewhere I got the idea that it was a hard rule that loose files always trump what is in a bsa no matter what because the loose files are loaded last and so regardless of date they win. Now after all these years I find out it's really because the loose files have a more recent date. -
I see the bell that's full of notices that I'm not interested in, the envelope that goes to my PM's, and the orange and white icon that goes to my account. You say there will be a new icon indicating new comments on all my mods? That's how an author with a lot of mods can check them all at a glance? Thanks
-
Is there a way you can get email notices whenever a post is added to your mod or is that automatic or what? How do authors stay in touch or do they have to check everyday?

.BSA Files, should I use them? & Game performance?
chambcra replied to MotokoKHammond's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
I've always made my own BSA files just for the organizational benefit. I've never used a mod manager and never will so I had to make BSA's because the Unoficial Oblivion Patch trashes the data folder. Here's what I think I've found, to be taken with a grain of salt. 1. Oblivion Mod Manager is good for browsing and extracting from BSA's but has a bug when creating if there is a single international character (à å ä ç č é è í í ò) in the file names. It acts like it made a good bsa file but it won't work. 2. I go along with what snargel said. I extracted Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa and repacked it with no compression using BsaCommander and the tiny little bit of stutter I saw at the very beginning after starting the game has gone away. It's not going to hurt anything so when in doubt, why not. 3. With the OBSE plugin called SkyBsa I think you could pack all the loose files of the Unoficial Oblivion Patch into a bsa. You don't need UOP if all you play are quest mods so I haven't tried it. 4. I like Drake's point that Bethesda uses bsa files for a reason. Surely it's significantly easier to open and close a single file than 18,000 files. 5. I'm not sure if this goes against conventional wisdom but here's what happened. I've been using a map replacer that was a loose file. C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Textures\menus\map\world\cyrodiil_resized.dds. After I decompressed the textures bsa file the new file had a new modern date and the cyrodiil_resized.dds in the bsa was overriding the loose file.
