"This boils down to opinions, but really I don't think ownership of a site would also give you right to force ads people do not want to see." But it gives him the right to permit you to download terabytes of gaming content for free, effectively extending the lifetime of games that should have been dead years ago? Let me demonstrate your lack of understanding with some examples: "What gives TV shows the right to show ads for women's goods when I'm a man. How could they subject me to this? It's so unfair!" "What's this, an ad for Gerber baby formula? I don't have a child, that's so wrong of them to show me these things..." "Oh god, another commercial for a GM truck. Don't they know I only drive cars? What's wrong with these people?" "A friend asked me if I wanted a beer. I said yes. He then hands me a Bud Light. The nerve of him, he should know I hate light beer!" Do you see what I'm getting at?

In response to post #45710905. I remember the early internet. We had ISPs like AOL and Prodigy. If you were online before web browsers were a thing, then the best you could get was a printout of local weather reports. Chat rooms were a new thing and AOL keywords was our first taste of "the web", fake as it may have been. Pseudo-web, hey that's a good name for it! But let us not forget, even in the mid-late 90s we still had ads, albeit in a slightly less complex way. Remember all those angelfire, tripod, and geocities pages that people would put up? I had a couple tripod pages back when I was writing IRC scripts, there was ads everywhere. They were simple ads, but even a simple ad that's only a few kb, would take a minute to load because we were on 14.4kbps connections, if you were lucky, you upgraded to 56k when it became available. -_-! At least you and I don't experience any ads on Nexusmods! Premium/support crew 4 life.

If you have no strikes against you, Dark0ne will actually go out of his way to fulfill reasonable requests personally. I've never seen them ban someone that didn't break the TOS contract they originally signed, and many banned members have been given a second chance. They are far more merciful than most online communities.

Just felt like I should defend the notion of time's existence beyond human perception. Every atom resonates at mostly stable frequencies. This is how atomic clocks work. Knowing this, one could say time exists outside of human interpretation. Even without an observer, until the last atom blinks out of existence, time absolutely exists on a very fundamental level.

Bethnet is a cancer. The fact that I need to spend days porting my mods into stripped down versions to upload to that dreadful site in order to combat theft is outrageous.

Changes to our file uploader and large file uploading fix
AKcelsior replied to TheTokenGeek's topic in Site Updates
30 minutes after uploading a 32mb file the green download with manager button is shown but it gives the server unreachable message. The title of the file isn't clickable but the download manually (small text near download with manager button) is active and working. I understand it takes time to propagate but I don't know if this is intentional behavior. If one of the goals is to mitigate complaints then I'm sorry to report I'm getting more complaints now than before the switch. EDIT: 90 minutes later and the file is still corrupt. EDIT: About 2 hours later and everything finally works. Maybe you should remove the "download with manager" button while the file is in limbo to prevent complaints. -
You have no idea how many people kept accusing me of uploading an invalid file. I kept insisting if they just waited it would work itself out. Thankfully I can now point them to this news article.

Great, maybe this means my files will have a > 5% endorsement ratio. Edit: Up 2% average. Too bad my files are under 2mb so I should disregard everything.

Steam and Bethesda remove paid modding from Skyrim Workshop

This isn't just a win for the modding community, it's a win for gaming in general. Everyone who flew a banner, everyone who shared links to the petition, everyone who stood together to shout down the paywall... We have a voice and we were heard. We won this battle, but I fear the armies are regrouping and this war is far from over. -
That's the issue that most regular users don't yet realize. I thought the Chesko issue would shed light on it, but it seems most casual modders don't understand that the best mods were created with multiple inputs. Popular mods like Realistic Lighting Overhaul and Immersive Armors weren't created by one person sitting at his computer typing away. So the issue now becomes, will we ever see mods like this anymore? It's understandable that a mod as big as RLO might want some money for the huge amount of work that is put into it, but just how do you go about dividing the revenue between the handful of people currently on the RLO team? Even worse, what about all the contributors over the years that have retired from the team but submitted countless hours of labor to the project? How will they get any of the kickback? Obviously a ton of work has gone into these projects, but unless you can divide the earnings somehow between the 20 or so modders will we see an end to big projects like this? Is it worth the trouble of releasing amazing team efforts for free when Valve is holding a fishing line in front of our faces with a $ hanging from the hook? I fear modders will be more concerned with making money than creating mods for the love of the community and projects like Immersive Armors/Weapons will be a relic of a time when things were good.

People on the workshop forums have already posted torrent links for the paid bundle. So yes it's really happening right now. Being a programmer myself, I fear for the future of this community with regards to piracy of paid mods. Honestly, what in the world would make you think this wouldn't happen? You really thought people weren't going to pirate paid mods? Is this your first time on the internet? This effects everyone and sticking your fingers in your ears and calling people fear mongers is only adding fuel to an already raging inferno.

Yes that's most likely correct. In the past great mods like "Weapon Mod Kits" have been an inspiration for future game systems Bethesda creates. A user most likely cannot try to engage in a legal dispute due to this very reason. I remember when "Build Your Own Home" was released. A couple months later Bethesda released "Hearthfire". It could be odd timing, but it's no secret Bethesda has used the modding community in the past for bright ideas to capitalize on. In the case of Antistar's WMK mod, they openly thanked him for the idea and Antistar viewed is as a recognition of his accolades and good publicity in the professional world. I would personally be flattered as well. It depends on how you look at it. Of course, Bethesda doesn't do a carbon copy. They rewrite the entire system in house, but the ideas come from this site. It's pretty much impossible to lay claim to an idea though so whether Bethesda owns our esps or not I doubt it matters in the long run. -

In response to post #24623019. #24623139 is also a reply to the same post. This is that grey area I've been mentioning. Technically it is no longer an individual property once it's been uploaded to the workshop. It will remain there forever, assuming at least 1 person buys it before its removed. So if you yank your mod from the workshop and then post it here, it's technically a type of retail fraud. That could get real nasty. There's a reason "Wet and Cold" is only version 1.4 here, while the steam version is 2.0. At first it seems normal that the author would want to exclusively release a new version on steam to generate some income, but is it really that simple? He no doubt had to sign an agreement to not upload that property elsewhere. 1.4 is fine, but if he uploads 2.0 a legal hammer could be brought down on his head. -

Wight is absolutely correct. The community is throwing labels and slurs like my ex throws babies. Now is not a great time to add anyone's name to the workshop. Your unexpected change of heart is not only shocking, but is inspiring. Here, have a kudos. So far I've speculated on some of the issues mod authors would soon be facing after joining hands with Valve... For example what would happen if a mod author releases a paid mod on workshop and then let's say he/she gets banned from Steam. Because Valve now owns your property, a consequence of this could be legal ramification if you then at some point uploaded an updated version to the nexus, or any site for that matter. Even though the creative mind was you, you technically don't own your own mod any longer and if Valve wanted to get nasty they could send you desist letters. Or in the case of Fores, his animations will forever be uploaded to the workshop against his will. Anyone that purchased Chesko's fishing mod will forever have access to Fore's animation even though Fore will never see a penny. What's worse, what's to stop one of users with that file from then using those animations in their own personal mod. The expectations that we are going to police ourselves is ludicrous. -

You will have to excuse my disbelief, but I don't believe things just because someone said so. If you have a link, please share it. If a mod author lists the nexus as an influential figure in helping them in their modding hobby they can opt to list them, just as people have listed AFK mods (who also runs a free service), You could list google if you wanted too. -

You advertising "future" features like that here is pretty shady. Valve is giving you all the boost you need, but to come to a free site and self promote your paid product is just low. -

Valve/Bethesda announce paid modding for Skyrim, more games to follow
AKcelsior replied to Dark0ne's topic in Site Updates
There's currently a divide in the community. This civil war has been brought on by Valve's new pay-per-mod system. This sick business practice entices mod authors to sell their work through Steam and take home 25% of the earnings while Valve takes 75%. This demotes the idea of releasing new content on sites like the Nexus because they can easily be (and indeed already has been) stolen from here and posted on the open market. Checks and balances mean nothing to big business. What is a mod author to do except enact a pay policy lest their mod be stolen and charged for by thieves? Valve is actively discouraging donation methods by banning users with links to sites like paypal. This is a truly filthy business practice brought on by corporate greed. Valve simply must take 75% of the mod's earnings and will literally silence you if you think differently. I find this absolutely disgusting. If you wish to add your voice to the growing list of users that feel this may be the beginning of the end of what made modding great please sign this petition and stop this madness...
