Game runs fine in the world, cities, and some dungeons, but other dungeons drop my FPS down to ~3. I obviously can't play the game this way. I have a Radeon HD 5700 Series GPU and this is my mod list. For some reason I now can't use lock picks or keys. When I click on the door the nothing happens (doesn't switch to lock picking screen or automatically use a key even if I have it). Any idea what's up? Here's my mod list. Well, today I decided my card was unusable in this condition, so it was worth messing it up to try and clean it better, and I think I'm going to be glad I did. I've never taken apart a GPU before, but it was surprisingly easy. Got everything unscrewed and separated and dusted off the card. The heat sink was very dirty (easily 50% obstructed with heavy dust). The thermal paste is more like chalk at this point, and after googling around and finding that it's pretty easy to replace, I've decided to do that (found a gift card to Best Buy in my wallet, woohoo). I'm about to head to Best Buy for the thermal paste, and also pick up some cotton swabs and iso alcohol. Hopefully I'll be able to put everything back together with no hitches. Wish me luck! Hey thanks for the replies. I was out of town and forgot to check this. I'm using MSI Afterburner, and my graphics card pretty rapidly gets up to ~108 C. I know this is really high, but I have my fan running at 100% at all times. I'm in what you could call a low income situation at the moment, so getting a new one is completely out of the question. Am I f***ed? Is there any way to try to reduce the temp? My fan is clean, so It's not dust doing the damage I wouldn't think (I cleaned it recently). My card is a Radeon HD 5700 Series with stock fan AFAIK, I bought it new about five years ago so it's been heavily used. Again thanks for the help guys. I'm getting the feeling that this may be a lost battle until I can get a new card, but if you have any ideas I'll try 'em. :smile: EDIT: I'm just assuming it's the graphics card overheating, because I did notice the temp before, but if it's something else I should check or watch in combination to the GPU let me know. I'm not very knowledgeable about hardware so your expertise is appreciated.

I posted about this problem once before and never was able to find out why it's happening, and now it's getting worse. I'm playing along with the same mods and same settings as I always use, and everything runs smoothly, but then at random intervals my FPS goes from >30 to <20. The only way I've found to fix this problem is to shut my comp down, let it cool off for a bit, then boot it up again. Problem is, that only buys my so much more time before another random drop, and the time in between is getting shorter and shorter. I just turned my comp on for the first time today and only got about 10 minutes of playing time before my FPS bombed. Please, I'm desperate for help. This makes Skyrim unplayable for me. :(

Defrag'd C:\ three times, but started Skyrim, and it was running ~15 FPS right off the bat. What the hell is happening?

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know about defragging (relatively computer illiterate). After I ran the virus scan I got another hour or so of regular gameplay then it randomly slid down again. This is making me worried. Well, running a defrag now.

Literally the only thing I've changed is a small add on to Vilja follower to make her eyes green (it's from the official Vilja Nexus page, not a third party change). Here's the weird part; I tried updating my drivers yesterday to try and fix the problem, and I started a new game and the problem was fixed. However, I got several hours in, and the FPS tanked again at a very random place. I was just in a field in Whiterun and all the sudden my FPS went from ~40 to <20. After a reboot of my PC, my FPS again went back to normal, then three minutes later, tanked once more. This is insane. I'm running virus protection right now. Will post results. Malewarebytes and Spybot S&D found a couple problems, we'll see if that fixes my issue. I sure hope it does. :(

I've changed virtually nothing (and nothing that should affect performance), but I'm now running skyrim at 10-20 FPS and 100% GPU usage. I honestly have no idea what to do or why this happened. Help?

EDIT/UPDATE - I've equipped the item to my character with the console and am having weird issues. The weapon shows up on my character, wields fine, attacks/blocks fine, but when I try to open my inventory or sheath my weapon, it crashes. If I try to load a save where I'm holding the weapon, it CTD's after the loading screen. ??? It ALWAYS crashes when I look at the item in the inventory, even if I'm holding the weapon and swinging it fine. I've been doing some basic mesh work on some weapons from a mod that's very customization friendly. I had been modifying weapons in NifSkope (changing/copying/pasting blocks, adding weapons from one mod to a related mod), and had successfully made dozen of different meshes. They worked flawlessly, but for some reason now when I try to load the custom mesh it crashes the game once I hover my mouse over the item in the inventory. This is really odd, because I'm doing literally nothing different from when it was working (and have even had lapses after I started having problems when it wouldn't do this and I thought it was fixed but then it wasn't). The mesh is even the finished mesh that I had saved after successfully testing it. I've nuked skyrim and reinstalled everything, and done all the troubleshooting I can think of, and I have no idea what to do. Please help, any ideas are greatly appreciated. :smile:

Bump?

Right after Galmar hands me the Stormcloak armor my game CTD's. I've tried loading an earlier save and finishing the quest with the console, but as soon as I close the console I CTD anyway. I can't for the life of me think of a mod that I use that would mess with this quest; anybody had this before or know how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Was just wondering if there was any update, as NMM has been down for two days now. I don't want to complain, as this is a wonderful site and I can't begin to imagine what overhauling it and fixing some problems would entail, but it seems to me that restoring NMM should be top priority... Thanks for any info, and the continued support of this site.
