Extended High level game play hightlights

41 kb, are you serious? -
Commonwealth Minutemen by a country mile. People in Diamond City love ya, and they'll run up and give you presents. DC guards will comment how they wanna join the Minutemen one day. Your Minutemen boys and girls will eat at Power Noodles and casually read Piper's paper by the stores, and everybody will love them for it. You are in tight with both the Brotherhood and Railroad, and have access to their bases and merchants. BOS patrols drop by to say hi, and RR assets like Amari continue to be friends. In fact, the Minutemen ending is almost too perfect with very few drawbacks, some players like to have drawbacks and tradeoffs, instead of being a complete everyfaction/everyguild god like in Skyrim.

Extended High level game play hightlights

At your level, NPCs that scale with player level, such as charred ghouls, mutant warlords, deathclaws, star paladins etc, have super high health pools and become bullet sponges. Since weapons damage doesn't scale, NPC battles just get longer and longer. If you go to Fallen Skybridge, Gunners and Mutants will probably shoot at each other for ages. The pack of named ghouls you ran across, they were probably all charred ghouls at your level. They are like a walking apocalypse to any humanoid NPC that they can path to. Charred ghouls have insane damage output, backed up by a massive health pool, combined with scary run speed. They can't deal with monstrous creatures and high end robots though, since their radiation damage does nothing. -
Stuttering in first person

So there is no stutter if you use TCL? -
Stuttering in first person

Sorry must make another post, incase you don't see an edit: Tapioks has a very useful guide on determining VRAM settings for ENB. -
Stuttering in first person
Roentgens replied to NathanTheCreator111's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
If it happens more when you are running, it suggests to me that it is texture streaming/object loading issue. Basically, the faster you run, the quicker you approach loadable objects in the distance, and that stutter is possibly due to FO4's problematic memory allocation. When you walk, the bottleneck is less because less objects are being loaded at once. You should try an ENB, maybe ENBoost If you have a GPU monitoring software like MSI Afterburner, you should check if your 1080 Ti or CPU is periodically throttling down in spikes too. I have a 1080 Ti as well, even running at 1080p I get short freezes when I have to load a new area, especially in the cities. -
Stuttering in first person
Roentgens replied to NathanTheCreator111's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
What is the nature of the stutter? I know of primarily two kinds, frequent intermittent stutters, usually short in duration with no pattern, and there is the stutter caused by texture streaming which you get when you transit from one map grid to another. The former is difficult to fix. -
Thanks for gathering the info, it will be a good reference for others. I was already using the looksmenu 2048 ini fix but still stuttering. In my case it was due to Real HD Faces, I hope I figure it out in time, so I can use settler mods again. EDIT: There is essentially no solution to Real HD Face Textures 2K. It will stutter with any settler mod, with or without looksmenu 2k face fix. Unique player face textures don't work either, since the popular NPC replaces will hook to player textures anyhow.
-
I get stutters running NPC mods such as Better Settlers as well, but a large part of it is due to me running 2k face textures. A lot of NPC mods are using player textures and assets, and that is one contributing factor. Generally, my observations track yours, there is something that is choking the engine when you load a large number of custom NPCs, even outside of their custom textures. I disabled the settler mods, it was a big loss but I have accepted it.

Yeah I've heard that stuff too, and I'd say they are under utilizing their SSDs. I bought two TLC NAND SSDs back in 2011 (TLC is the cheap stuff with the lowest read/write cycles), and I put them into RAID 0 as my main OS drive. I put games, system pagefile, caches, everything on it and it still works to this day. It has been more reliable than my disk drives, and I can only imagine the latest SSDs are even better in all aspects. As for the OP, just put the game on the SSD, just don't bother with the 55gb high res pack. My installation is 50gb with a ton of mods, add another 4gb for saves, and another few gb for NMM, it's all well under 70gb. I could have even put the NMM file directory on my disk drives to save more space.

To add to agreatweight, I'd say 4gb VRAM is definitely not enough for a heavy ENB setup. I run a maxed out ENB at 1920x1200, and I monitor constantly with Rivatuner Statistics Server. I have a gtx1060 6gb VRAM with 16gb system RAM, and even then I get heavy pagefile usage. This game depends on memory, and it gets big performance increases from memory speed and memory capacity. RX470 is marginal for a heavy ENB setup, it will be fine outside the city, but it will get tanked at places like Postal Square, Fallen Skybridge, and Faneuil hall. Go for RX480, and try for the 8gb version. There is nothing out there that is as demanding as FO4 with ENB.

You can lower DOF setting in the launcher from Bokeh to Standard, that will give you some FPS but lower quality blur, but you do need DOF to achieve what you are looking for, there is no special INI workaround for it. DOF in general is not that performance heavy, it has only moderate effect on performance. I disabled DOF in my game because I don't like it visually, but if I did have it enabled I would definitely keep it at the Bokeh setting. http://images.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/fallout-4/fallout-4-depth-of-field-interactive-comparison-001-bokeh-vs-standard.html You can reduce computationally expensive settings like godrays, shadow distance, and as a last resort, shadow quality, to gain back some performance. Godrays has a real cinematic presence in specific areas, but if you completely disabled it, you probably won't even notice it. You can gain ~30fps from Ultra setting godrays to disabled in some areas. Godrays is very heavy on tessellation, this is very difficult for even nvidia Maxwell, and even worse for AMD.

Areas with high draw calls and shadow calls will be bottlenecked by a weak CPU. If you want more performance, you should make the move to a new platform like Skylake/Kabylake or Ryzen, with DDR4 support. Both recent Beth titles, Skyrim and FO4 have been CPU bottlenecked. I'm barely surviving on a i5 [email protected], and it's bottlenecking even a GTX 1060 on a maxed out ENB setup. GamersNexus has a good article on effects of CPU and RAM performance in FO4. http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/2182-fallout-4-cpu-benchmark-huge-performance-difference

Nick Valentine's perk potentially unobtainable? -Spoilers-
Roentgens replied to Khtugg's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
I don't think it's a bug, you just need to reach 100% affinity with Nick, and this can be done after Long Time Coming is completed. You need 100% affinity + Long Time Coming to get his final talk and perk.- 2 replies

Ammunition reloading, you are all doing it wrong!
Roentgens replied to Fatalmasterpiece's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
You made a bunch of good points, but this was by far the strongest point made. The current simplified system removes one of the key strengths of chamber loaded guns and revolvers. The way I see it is, even an advanced game like Stalker, which had an inventory system and ballistics modeling, did not use proper mags (but it did have weapons durability and jams). Fallout 4 doesn't even have weapons durability, let alone ballistics modeling or magazines. I could emerge from water and fire a waterlogged rifle without clearing it, etc. Beth makes game worlds, their approach is very macro, and this is good enough for most players. In a way, survival mode was actually a real departure for Beth as it was a very micro oriented development. On the hierarchy of needs, there are so many things that could be implemented, that something like real time magazine and ammo management is a very low priority. We could imagine the things that could be done though. Magazine and ammo management would change the game progression a lot. The difference between a raider and a Gunner could be the difference between a guy with a break action laying down potshots, versus a skilled enemy with automatic rifles and reliable magazines, with the ability to lay down a high volume of fire. It could really show the difference between an organized force with proper logistics, and a ragtag force that uses whatever they can scavenge. A rookie protagonist might have to make do with single shot weapons in the beginning, but as they accumulate reliable mags, that pre-war automatic sitting back in town workbench might become viable later on. Of course, this skews the current perk system in favor of semi autos and single shot, but I'm sure that it could be worked around. You could even have mechanics like a load bearing vest that will let you have 6 ready mags that can reload a rifle at full speed, and the rest you will have to draw from the pack at the cost of time. Generally, I think a real magazine/ammo mechanic would change the pacing quite a bit. More downtime between engagements, and the engagements themselves will be shorter, as the player will have less combat endurance. -
The Why FO4 Totally Sucks Pants Party
Roentgens replied to PocketKnife256's topic in Fallout 4's Discussion
Personally, I thought the OP was just having a little bit of fun lol. But we all know the endgame of FO4 is fashion and apparel. -
It should be pointed out that the actual Septim bloodline died out long, long before the Oblivion Crisis. I think it ended with Kateriah, but i'd have to dig up the line of descent again... The problem wasn't really hereditary descent, but the Amulet of Kings As for the current line of Emperors, Mede doesn't seem overly concerned. For such a great leader (and he really was a great leader) this is telling. The line of descent is well in place, and there is no risk of a vacant throne. I actually suspect Motierre was working for the Dominion. We know they have spies in Cyrodiil, they have since the rule of Titus Mede I. They've also infiltrated the Elder Council before. Tiber Septim's direct bloodline ended at Pelagius if I remember correctly. And I agree, Mede II was an exceptionally capable emperor saddled with a weak Empire and a strong Dominion. I suspect that while Motierre was in on the plot, he is not in direct line for succession to the throne. It is likely that multiple members of the Elder Council are participating in the plot. They would not send the successor out to do the dirty work, because even if he/she escaped mortal danger, if any rumors came out that the successor had a direct hand in the Emperor's death, all legitimacy would be lost. They just sent someone that they trust, and wouldn't mind losing.

Saadia's story does not check out. The Thalmor prefer to handle things in house, they would not hire Alik'r warriors who can't even make it past the guards at the front gate. If we remember Malborn, Esbern, and the Dragonborn, we know that the Thalmor can infiltrate cities at will and capture or eliminate their marks with sleeper agents and kill squads. The large amount of Alik'r warriors in Skyrim suggests that there is indeed a large bounty on Saadia, and it is not from the Thalmor.

Replaying Skyrim. Adept vs Expert vs Master vs Legendary?
Roentgens replied to deception345's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim LE
As an archer, almost any difficulty can be overcome as long as you have enough arrows. If you have Dawnguard, fletch your own arrows and you won't run out against ridiculously tough opponents. Higher difficulties in the early game will punish mages and two handed/dual wield specialists more than almost any other class. Followers do not become any weaker relative to enemies as you raise the difficulty setting. If you bring 4 followers, you essentially reach critical mass and will outnumber the enemy in most engagements. Sneak attack crits + bows + cheap arrows are a match made in heaven. YMMV -
Stalker SoC was a unique one of a kind game. Entering Rostok and Pripyat for the first time was a breathtaking experience. To this day its atmosphere, audio, graphics, art design is still top notch. The game never got too easy, and arrogance is always punished no matter what your equipment is. The deeper into the zone you get, the more you will have to prepare. But after a long foray into the wilds, you can always return to Rostok to wind down, grab a drink and listen to a guitar by the campfires. Its why the game is still a cult classic. Whatever Bethesda does, I hope they'll at least try to continue the franchise instead of just sinking it. However, using the Creation Engine for a Stalker sequel would be a step back compared to the Xray engine. The poor shadowing and lighting would ruin the atmosphere. The lack of bullet physics will also be a major loss, especially for modding.

It has been written in books that Tiber Septim had used his shout to blow apart castle walls. Considering that the Tribunal of Morrowind had to bow down to Tiber Septim, I would think that those various accounts of Tiber Septim were not purely exaggeration. The Thu'um can be immensely powerful, and I think what the current Dovahkiin can manage does not necessarily represent the limits of the Thu'um.

This has been a very helpful discussion as most of the hangs and CTDs I encountered were a consequence of pushing the game too hard. After disabling the Texture Pack Combiner, these issues disappeared. It's a fact that certain areas are oversubscribed. Whiterun and its surrounding areas are especially bad as others have said. For reference I only had the following mods: Whiterun Outskirts Market LC-Become King of Riverhelm Texture Pack Combiner (Skyrim 2K, Serious HD, Skyrim Realistic Overhaul, Vurt's Flora, Lush Trees and Grass) And it resulted in nonstop CTDs and hangs all around Whiterun.

Titus Mede II had inherited a weakened empire in an era of Thalmor ascendancy. If he had made any mistake it would have been at the negotiating table where he had ceded too much to the Thalmor. He chose to make great sacrifices to preserve the Empire at any cost. And the cost was high because the Thalmor were masters of diplomacy and managed to bluff the empire into accepting overbearing terms in return for a temporary truce. Titus Mede is more at home on the field as a general than as a diplomat as he had shown in the Battle of Red Ring. It was on the negotiating table that he was outmaneuvered. I believe that ultimately Titus Mede II had pragmatic intentions at heart when he requested that the dragonborn kill Motierre. He realized that the dragonborn has the power to be a kingmaker, and that Motierre is too weak to save a dying empire. The dragonborn is killing two birds with one stone; he ends the reign of a capable yet disgraced emperor, and denies the throne to a conniving tyrant like Motierre. Killing the man who negotiated the White-Gold Concordat is symbolically equivalent to tearing the treaty apart. The dark brotherhood is just there to provide the means for the dragonborn to fulfill his destiny as a kingmaker.
