ruvuk
Hi everybody. :-) This is a simple question about a horse. I REALLY like the Skyrim horses. But I'm guessing (maybe 80%-sure) that I'll never get a horse for myself. There are just too many places I can't take a horse. I got my first and only horse killed about 5 minutes after I'd purchased him, and that was a downer. I've since fiddled with the game settings so that all horses are now "essential" and some other indestructable sort of setting. <lol> Well, practically speaking, I never ride a horse now because I'd have to STEAL the horse to do so. Well, while I was involved in the Civil War for Skyrim, there were several times when one of the horses didn't show the usual "Steal Horse" option but, instead, a command to simply "Ride Horse." So I did. 2 or 3 times. Short distances. Well, no surprise, I'd often have to dismount and fight some bad guy or bear along the way. If I hurried and got right back on the horse, all was well. But if the fight took more than about 10 seconds, the horse left. The first time the horse left, I thought my fun with the horse was over. But this same horse started meeting me when I'd fast-travel. I fast-traveled maybe 10 times during the war, as it seemed that I was repeatedly going back and forth. Anyway, the horse would only just meet me; I always had something to do when I arrived and wasn't ready to mount the horse right that minute. So the horse always left. I'm expecting that the horse will be waiting for me the next time I fast-travel after writing this post. :-) He's not exactly a problem, but I think it'd be better if he found somebody who could really use a horse. Or just go back to whichever stable he was living in before hooking up with me. Can anybody tell me how to send this horse home? Tx.
Georgiegril
I suspect that some of the changes you made caused that horse to be "your" horse--that is owned by you. This typically happens if you buy a horse, not if you ride a stolen horse. However, some of the changes you made may have altered this. You might be able to fix this by removing the essential tag and then killing it. (A distasteful solution, perhaps.) I sincerely recommend the Convenient Horses mod. It vastly increases the usefulness and (Surprise!) convenience of horses-- you can have them follow you, or wait wherever..and you can call them to you when you need them. It is also very adjustable to conform to many styles of play. I found horses more an annoyance than anything until I started using this mod. ruvuk
@Georgiegril: Thank you for your nice reply. I will definitely try Convenient Horses. . . . As for the horse following me now, I'm *guessing* that making all horses essential isn't the problem for the not-dazzling reason that I added the essential and invulnerable options to all horses months ago, but I didn't have any odd experiences with horses 'til I rode the horse during my time with the Imperials. . . . But I'll try your suggestion and remove the horse options and see if that changes anything. . . . If not, and if I've still not figured out how to send the horse home, I'll think about zapping him with something (whatever is sure to put him down in one knock). Hate that. And, as it happens, I've found myself using fast travel less and less--to the point where I'm always surprised when I do use fast travel and find the horse walking off. <lol> Just talking here . . . I tried a mod that added wild horses to the game. I thought that was a great idea. And one horse in each herd was rideable (or something like that). Better and better. The mod worked as described . . . but I found myself not liking it all that much because the horses in these herds didn't seem to have the right "moves" for relaxed, free-ranging horses. Especially when one of the wild horses would turn around, the turn made the horse look like he or she was a tin target in a carnival shooting gallery. Basically, I guess the only movements the mod author had to work with were the game's movements for the horses when they were stabled/hitched or being ridden. I was really sorry that the wild horses mod didn't work out. . . . 'Course, the mod might be just right for most players. Maybe I'm too fussy about this stuff. Or maybe I'm just stuck on my own experiences growing up with horses. (Tennessee Walkers and my own horse, a Palomino.) :o)
Kateishness
I think it's an issue with the game system 'remembering' what horse you last rode on, so something flags in the Player Faction about that horse being owned by you (possibly because it's not flagged as stolen? I'm not sure), thus the fast traveling following. Most notable example I've had with this is at the Riften Stables, after helping out Shadr (the stable hand guy, being shaken down my Sapphire) you're able to pretty much borrow a horse from here all the time, however, like stolen horses it will walk away after dismounting. So now every time I fast travel, there it is. I've had this since I first started playing Skyrim, so it doesn't really bother me (I just put it down to another Skyrim "feature" ;P). But I did a quick search on the Nexus for you and I've found this, if you're interested: Stop Horses Fast TravelingCan't really vouch for this as I haven't used it, but it looks like you'll be able to dismiss the rogue horse, without trying to zap him. ;)
ruvuk
@Kateish_: Thanks a lot for the link to the mod that'll stop the horses fast-traveling with me. I bookmarked that one and will use it the next time I have a horse following me around. :o) As for getting used to a horse following me, this isn't a big deal, and I'm pretty sure I'd soon get used to it. Plus, it might come in handy if I started thinking about my quests knowing that I'd have the option to ride at certain points. (Have you tried the Convenient Horses mod? I'm going to try that one, too, for sure. The horse isn't following me now because I started a new game. This is the 3rd time I've started over b4 getting too far along. I'm trying to do some different things (like choose different skill perks) in the game, but I have a hard time with this kind of planning when I'm a little guy--it's hard to resist getting the fighting perks when you really need them! <lol> Thank you guys for your help with the mods I need. It's so nice when I can find some help here with my noob questions. :o)
Kraeten
This has happened to me too actually. There's this hunter camp out by winterhold, and there's a dead horker up on a table to be carved up. Anyways there's a horse waiting at the camp, presumably for its hunter owner. The hunters are dead though, as they somehow let themselves get killed by the slow sorry Horkers. Anywho, I figured since they wouldn't be needing the horse I rode it to the College. Horse followed from then on pretty much. I liked to think it was grateful, but I'm sure it's just some bug. It's fixed though when you DO buy a horse. ruvuk
@Kraeten: Thanks for the posting. I'll definitely remember what you said about the tagalong horse getting sorted when I buy a horse. It'll be great to have a horse. I'm fantasizing about the farm I'll put together one day . . . a couple of horses, lots of cows, lots of goats, lots of chickens, and some serious farmland (that doesn't look like somebody's kitchen garden) . . . Maybe I can figure out how to get somebody to take care of it for me . . . :o) . . .
