CaptainPatch Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Aha! Never would have thought to look past Steam to steamapps and then to common, and _then_ to Skyrim. Why can't Win 7 Search find it? It may be waaaaayyyy down the directory chain, but the file name is distinctive and solitary, not appearing _anywhere_ else on the PC's file directory. Compared to XP's Windows Explorer, Win 7's version seems to lack.... intuition. So, I clear out any existing versions of SKSE and Wrye Bash (to minimze confusion) and reinstall them to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\ Now to see how I might screw that up. *********And sure enough, it screwed up. I started the download Wizard and specified the destination location to be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\. Sure enough, the skse_1_06_14 folder is there. But the skse_loader file is now one folder lower down from Skyrim. Am I supposed to take the entire _contents_ of the skse folder and paste it into the Skyrim folder, so that the SKSE_loader and TESV.exe are on the same level? (That would be my guess, but it would pointedly be a _guess_.) Edited June 7, 2013 by CaptainPatch
ripple Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Yes. Make sure all files and the sub folders in the skse folder and their contents get moved over as well so they conform to the game directory path (/data/ to /data/).
CaptainPatch Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) Okay, it looks like I'm making progress. A last complication is that there is a Skyrim Data folder, and there is also a skse_1_06_14 Data folder. Lifting the Data folder from the skse_1_06_14 folder and attempting to deposit it in the Skyrim folder generates a warning message that says, "Do you want to replace the existing folder with the newer one of the same name?" Seems like what would be called for is to rename the skse_1_06_14 folder's Data folder.... but wouldn't doing that interfere with skse_1_06_14's functionality? Edited June 7, 2013 by CaptainPatch
ripple Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) Choose 'yes', the files in "\data" folder of the SKSE archive are supposed to go into the game data folder. They were archived that way, folder and all, for easy extraction (usually 'extract here' or 'unrar here', depending on the decompression utility you are using). Edited June 7, 2013 by ripple
CaptainPatch Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Done. Now, when I start the skse_loader.exe file, the game of Skyrim itself starts: boom, boom-boom, Continue/Load/New/Credits/Quit menu appears. Is that what is _supposed_ to happen? If so, is this supposed to be how I henceforth start the game (given that I had mods that used SKSE), rather than the Steam-provided desktop shortcut?
ripple Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Yes, you should always start the game with the SKSE loader if you have mods that require SKSE, not the vanilla game executables or the launcher.
CaptainPatch Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) Okay then. I retargetted the shortcut to use C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\skse_loader.exe Now to sort out Wrye Bash. Bleah. So I take the time to review the Readme. Therein in states "1. Download and install the MSVC++ 2008 Redistributable." So I follow the link and start to download that program. But it comes time to Run the installer, it tells me "Error 1704. An installation for NVIDIA Control Panel is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue." Does this mean that MSVC++ is incompatible with my NVIDIA Control Panel? And if those two are incompatible -- and MSVC++ can't be installed -- does that mean that Wrye Bash can't be installed? ripple Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) There shouldn't be any issues with nvidia control panel....try updating your graphic driver. Remember you uninstall the old driver completely first (preferably with something like Driver Sweeper afterwards to get rid of any orphan files and registry edits). Edited June 7, 2013 by ripple
CaptainPatch Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 (edited) I use the NVIDIA GeForce Experience to automatically keep my video driver up-to-date. As a matter of course, whenever it installs the most recent version (320.18, dated 5/23/2013), it removes the previous version. (Or so I've been led to believe.) I tried to locate the current driver via DXDIAG, but the only references Search (with ts lack of intuition) can find is in a bunch of System Information .ini-type files. (Which translates to, "If there is more than one driver on file, I don't know where to find them.") [Aside: See what I mean about the detours? Pretty consistently, in order to get to the "next step", you have to first do something with _that_ program. And before you can do something with _that_ program, you have to do something with this **other** program. And before you can do something with this **other** program... If programming is your way of life, all these intermediate steps are probably inconsequential. But to someone that has to climb a ladder just to get a view of becoming a neophyte, it quickly becomes rather... daunting.] Edited June 7, 2013 by CaptainPatch
ripple Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) I am not sure, but it sounds you've got some non-Skyrim related PC issues that needs sorting out. Have you tried lower the Win7 UAC settings? See if you can install Wrye Bash (the standalone version, then the Python version if that doesn't work) and run it without MSVC++. Edited June 9, 2013 by ripple
