Fallout 3 Main Menu Freeze

Recommended Posts

Let me start off by saying that this situation happens to ALL my Bethesda games, including Morrowind, Oblivion, New Vegas, and finally, this game. I don't know what happened. First thing I noticed is that whenever I go into the main menu, the background music doesn't start. I don't know why, though I really don't care about the BGM that much. It's the fact that whenever I click "continue" or "load" or new", it always freezes. It doesn't crash. Just freezes. It can't be my load order, since this was working yesterday.

My suspicion is AVG, which is an anti-virus program. I ran a full-scan yesterday and cleared every virus and malaware/spyware. If it's not this, then I don't know what else that could have caused this. This never happened before. Please help.

What has changed on your system since yesterday? You can try restoring your system to a restore point just before the problem started. - hopefully whatever caused the change also set a restore point - Some Antiviruses do when they update.

Are you launching from NMM or a script extender? try launching directly from the game launcher without any script extenders (OBSE, FOSE etc) Also, try launching with the original disk in the DVD drive.

It can also be caused by a firewall blocking things. Most firewalls also have exclusion lists.

Set up your AVG & firewall exclusion lists for the game folders as well.

I do not use AVG, but do use Comodo. I set my entire C:\Games folder as excluded - this takes in all games, including the Steam games which are in C:\Games\Steam - AND, it covers my NMM, BOSS, Wrye Bash and a few others that I have installed to the C:\games instead of the arbitrary and fickle UAC controlled 'Program Files' folder that they all want to default to. Then I also excluded the folders where the save games and the ini files are.

You just have to remember to un exclude them if you want them to be included in a full system scan - a good idea as otherwise a virus could hide in those folders. (not very likely though)

Many antiviruses scan every hard disk read and every hard disk write while you are playing. Even if it was just scanned a few seconds ago. This can cause a very small delay for every read and every write - possibly not even noticeable. Excluding these folders from this kind of scanning will speed up those actions that do a read or write as well.

I'm using the script extender, but using the original launcher harbors the same result.

Not only did I try excluding all the games, I even turned off AVG just to see if it changed. It didn't.

I guess my only option is to try to restore the point before it all happened. Can you tell me how to do that?

Hi gunneroflife,

sorry for this words but imo you must make a backup of your data and go on formatting your pc and after that you must make all upgrade to your drives and SO , this is only action to obtain a clean base for test other solutions, i suggest you to change also the antivirus with one less intrusive.
