Autosave reliability

I remember with Fallout New Vegas (maybe FO3 also) it was advised to turn off autosaves and use CASM or any other save game manager, due to the autosave causing crashes.

So I just recently bought Skyrim and was wondering if its safe to use autosaves?

Thanks

Autosaves can cause crashes caused by corrupt saves for several reasons.

1. Autosaves overwritte old saves. This process increases the chance of save file corruption. (Also true for quick saves).

2. Autosaves, because they are times, can sometimes cause a corrupted save when it creates a save in the moddle of a script execution. (Also possible with quick saves, or even full saves, but less likely since you are in control of when the saves happen.)

Autosaves also can cause annoying lags as they create their saves. This may be less noticible with the saves tied to an activity (ex save on rest) but can be very annoying during timed saves.

After disabling autosaves I only have had a handful of corrupt saves (in over a year). Those were attributable to my trying to full save a game during a script execution (usually my companion mounting/dismounting his horse), immediately apparent and quickly remedied by reverting to the previous save.

Right, but besides the little noticeable lag, if you do both save regularly and use auto save, if one file is corrupted you simply fall back on the others. Having a auto save in a spot I didn't remember to save in is nice. Even if it has the chance to corrupt ... I am not losing anything. It's simply a convenience and the corruption excuse makes no sense to me.

Now if you only rely on auto saves, that's just dumb.

So again, why shouldn't a person use auto saves, assuming they still regularly save as well?
