It looks like a monkey, it smells like a monkey... It's...?

Santa, you absolutely hit the nail on the head with this post, I couldn't agree with you more.

However.. there are several (well, I should name one in particular) mods that make fallout3 a MUCH more enjoyable experience, that being Martigen's Mutant Mod I sincerely thought about putting down Fallout 3 and playing some other game, until I stumbled upon this mod, I played on Very Hard difficulty before discovering this, and still do, but now I can honestly say with the Increased, Increased Spawns.esp checked, when I'm using a vanilla Hunting Rifle, It makes the game so much more worth it.

I'm sure you know of this mod, and probably have it installed already, Just wanted to make the point that, There are mod's being made to make the game better.. Honestly I would give it sometime just too see how it all play's out, While I am very disappointed with Fallout 3's Main story, and I suppose overall.. It does have potential, after the amazing Nexus community puts it through the ringer, I think that the final product will be something we can all at least be content with.

Cheers, Lukas.

Say something constructive or say nothing at all...

OK, how's this?

I truly hope you enjoy the freedom to say what you please, none of which was constructive or productive, while telling others to either add to your rant or say nothing. That freedom is brought to by Hubris and Arrogance Inc.

Now - Try doing something difficult instead of ranting and then essentially demanding that other people fix what you don't like - Learn to code and develop games. Learn to mod yourself so you can show everyone else how it should be done.

Mods: If this warrants a ban or removal, so be it. Rants with a condition that you either support the whining and thrashing or stay silent are nothing but trolling for attention and a fight. Rants that present a problem and then ask the community to come up with solutions without being arrogant about it will produce results.

I don't put up with this kind of behavior from people in real life, I certainly have no problem pointing out a thrashing toddler in need of a nap here.

Quoted for truth

Ya, fallout is a bit generic now but would you rather have a generic fallout or no fallout at all?

If they took all the time they took designing GECK and put it in fallout, fallout would never reach the heights which it will reach in the future.

What will fallout become in the future? Only time will tell

This is essentially what I was thinking of saying, but in all fairness, he is a modder.

"I'm looking for my father, middle-aged guy, have you seen him?"

This summarizes the extent of "roleplaying" you will do during conversations in Fallout 3.

Now, if someone; anyone walked up to me on the street and asked "I'm looking for my father, middle-aged guy, have you seen him?"

"'Bout yea tall, kinda looks like me, has a beard and probably a labcoat or a Vault 101 jumpsuit, sciencey-type, I'd tell you all of this but there isn't enough room in the conversation window?"

You're a role-player, use your *ban* imagination. Let's not forget that the player character's appearance (and therefore, to an extent, your father's) is completely changeable, and as such the game would have to magically generate a description based on his appearance?*

That would be a-ok, considering the fact that this is a "huge open-game-world", but if you ever try to enter a building, which seems to be nearly intact, you will soon find that (insert random percentage-here) doors does not open. Sure there are doors and sure there are boarded up-windows and sure it does look "intriguing", but no. You can NOT enter.

Try bringing down the console and type "tcl" (toggle-clipping-mode), which gives you the ability to "fly", then look down on... ooohhh let's say; Tenpenny towers.

What do you see?

A big hole.

A big nothing.

A roof?

No.

Nothing.

Same goes for all major buildings which are taller than the average super-mutant.

They have no roof.

There are no ladders.

And "there are no roofs".

While this would not bother the "casual-gamer-who-only-wanders-where-Bethesda-wants-them-to", the "rest of us", who actually want to explore

What the hell are you exploring that puts you ABOVE Tenpenny Tower? There aren't any hills that high. Are you just randomly climbing buildings? Noclipping? I mean, if you're using glitches to get up higher than Bethesda expected, why the hell should they cater to that at the sake of performance?

The buildings that you CAN enter, consist of load-zones. God forbid that there would be even the slightest possibility of entering a house, by simply opening the door and blasting everything inside and then smoothly run away for cover.

No.

You are loaded into a completely different zone. It is not even on the world-map (if you look at it in the editor or (once again) "tcl" your way around.

This is (of course) done so that everything will run smoothly on your computer/console.

But it completely breaks immersion.

So not being able to wander in and out of a building (the only entrance to which is a door) freely is a bigger sin than a game that runs like crap because everything is out in the open at all times?

You got weird priorities.

There are PLENTY of items to find. Everything from a simple "iron" to "forks".

These items have one purpose. The "rock-it-launcher"

Yay. I can shoot forks.

My gratitude is endless.

It's called clutter. It's there so that the game world isn't barren, and/or strewn with weapons every five inches. It's the kind of random poo you find stashed up on shelves. Go remove all the clutter from any given house or building and then stare at the even-more-boring (as far as you're concerned) glory of it all for a while, and you'll see why they did it.

The AI (or lack there-of) makes up for interesting encounters.

Actually no disagreement here, the combat AI is pretty dull.

The dungeons in Daggerfall was the highlight of Bethesda's dungeon-crawling.

That was their highlight? Mounds of earth randomly placed with completely random contents? You could enter the door at the top and actually take a stairway straight up, and you're bitching that Fallout 3 breaks immersion?

You're *ban* amazing. Is your head lopsided, too? I picture you with a lopsided head.

* I'm actually noticing that a lot of your complaints reflect upon limitations, both script-wise and engine-wise. That's fine, I guess, but I'm not sure why you think you can expect better. Fallout 1 and 2 certainly didn't get your hopes up for this, and there's no way Oblivion did because you apparently hated it. Why the hell did you even get the game in the first place? Just to female dog?**

** If you can be a facetious angel, so can I.

Censorship makes me seem a lot less angry.

I can't think of anything the OP said that I disagree with. To be honest I treat Fallout 3 in the same way I treated Oblivion, a big empty world that will slowly be filled up by modders. If it wasn't for mods I would have given up with the thing a long time ago.

Why shouldn't we be able to wonder everywhere without load screens? the GTA series and its many clones have allowed players to freely roam cities for years. Interiors should of course be separate but there is no excuse for forcing the player through several loading screens and a subway just to get to the other side of a pile of rocks. If it's a limitation of the engine then that begs the question why are a company known for making large open sandbox games not using an engine up to the job? Fallout 3 works in exactly the same way Morrowind did, isn't it about time they bought things up to date?

The GTA Series and its many clones don't have as much interactivity with the landscape and the world around them. The DC ruins are densely populated with interactive objects, Havok objects, enemy AI and scripted events. GTA IV had pedestrian AI (which was really very simple), vehicle AI (again, very simple), and not much else.

I grant you, they could've easily cut down on the amount of stuff/junk/miscellany they added to the world and been able to open things up a little more, but apparently this is how they wanted to do it.

A better engine would've done a better job, but they're using a very general, multi-purpose engine (pretty much the same one they've been using since Morrowind) and tweaking it to their needs. This gives them (and us) flexibility to do a lot of things a more specialized engine couldn't handle well. It's a trade-off, but considering the popularity of this site it was a good call.

GTA4 and Saints Row 2 both have plenty of objects in the game world that use physics, just drive into a crowd of peds and watch them fly or drive through various pieces of street furniture. Saints Row 2 also had bottles and the like scattered about, not just as decoration either but objects you could hurt people with. You can't damage the environment in this game at all, except for the exploding cars. It feels like a film set or a theme park. I agree with you on the modding though, a familiar and mod friendly engine certainly helps there.
