thoughts on vampire lord

okay...I am playing through the dawnguard questline..because I finally got sick of the endless vampire attacks killing off my vendors.

I became a vampire lord halfway through and I am playing around with it ...maybe go for the steam achievment.

I am thinking this may be due to the "mobflation" that occurs at higher levels, the vampire lord looks powerful in theory if I was still level 10 when I became it...

I just want to hear other's opinions on the vampire lord form

the thing is, i dunno if I am playing it wrong or if its just really poorly designed. it could also have something to do with the way the leveled enemies scale...i am level 73 right now.

when I turn into the lord, I have this weak raise dead spell that doesn't work on anything they all say the level is too high, and the drain life spell is so crappy and weak it takes 8 shots to kill a mudcrab and about 15 shots to kill a "bandit" and anything above "bandit outlaw" is practically unkillable.

the form has like zero armor so if I get ganked by more than 2 enemies they slaughter me in seconds.

the descriptions say the claw attacks are "Fast and powerful" but they are pitifully slow and the bite attack to progress my perks is very hard to pull off.

enemies that die in 1 or 2 hits with my sword take about 20 claw swipes in vampire lord form.

I feel gimped when I transform and I have taken to using tactics like killing all the enemies but 1 then transforming and feeding on the last one... or getting them almost dead with my sword then transforming... or I could just feed on mudcrabs to get the perks but what the heck?

Another satisfied customer ;) I was thinking the same thing...

Werewolf, same thing, no armor, no damage, weak as s#*! - only has drawbacks...

I tried both way, few times, never felt it was a good choice, have since completely ignored both sides...

Btw, that all your enemies are so strong - next time start a game with a good enemy scaler... something with correct encounter zones so you actually see a progress of strenght instead of just needing more dmg each level to kill the same enemies. ERSO, SkyRe, whichever you prefer.

This is strange, I found both werewolf and vampire lord are very powerful. It takes some time to get used to, but pretty interesting to play once I managed. My vampire lord can defeat a whole tribe of Forsworn with ease using vampiric drain and vampiric grip (are you sure you are not taking Serana with you?), provided I fight during night. My werewolf, with howl of terror and ragdoll attack, can pretty much make short work of almost everything. Only dragon, giant and mammoth prove to be threats. I was at level 81 and play on legendary difficulty. I don't use any kind of combat overhaul or better vampire or werewolf mod.

well, as a matter of fact I got changed to vampire lord by serana to get into the soul cairn and since she follows you through most of the quest line, I was unaware of the "conditional" nerf on my vampiric drain when she is with me. I hate followers and never use them...

I have since finished dawnguard and had to cure myself to get the guy to talk to me again so I have no gotten around to asking serana to turn me back yet.

I don't really get why they had to nerf vampire lord only when serana is following and then force you to take her through most of dawnguard...maybe they thought it would make it challenging? it might have been fun to fight harkon vampire lord vs vampire lord but serana ruined it...bonehead programming and I know someone made a mod for it but whatever, I finished dawnguard I just wanted the vampires to stop killing off all my vendors...another bonehead programming decision...

right at the beginning of the game

I lost belethor like 10 minutes after getting to whiterun and had no idea why because it happened off stage

then I lost the warmaiden in the next vampire attack...her ashes are still in front of my house where they have been for the last 175 hours

then I lost her husband in the next attack because he was inexplicably outside instead of minding the shop.

then I lost the blacksmith of riverside in a dragon attack and had to adopt his daughter (nothing to do with vampires I know)

then I lost madesi and mjoll the huntress and maven blackbriar in riften (I reloaded)

I lost all the food vendors in markarth (I just let them go)

then the vampires tried to kill lod in falkreath and I was like...eff this I better finish dawnguard

it seems like the vampires specifically target the vendors first.

I supposed they must done that to kind of pressure you into finishing...and as I progressed, the attacks started getting worse and more frequent and some essential quest npcs got permanently locked into running away in fear mode from the constant attacks and it took several reloads but I finally did it and

I digressed, my point is I probably won't do that again.

if I ever get around to asking serana to change me back I will try and finish the perk tree and I have the bow now to make things easier

Actually, both vampire lords and werewolves get armour, although its not a lot - maximum of 400 for werewolves and 300 for vampire lords, though this is partially made up for by a substantial health boost. They do pretty decent damage though - 120 per hand/claw for werewolves (with all the perks) and 150 for a vampire lord's vampiric drain (not perk affected), but only at level 46. Annoyingly, they don't scale any further.

I guess lycanthropy and vampirism are most useful for classes that wouldn't normally have much offense/defense, such as thieves. Even then, the lack of scaling past level 46 limits their usefulness.

EDIT: The nerf of vampiric drain while Serana is with you is actually a glitch. I don't know if its planning on being fixed.

Actually, this seems to be intentional on Bethesda's part (as silly as I and most people would agree that it is), according to the UKSP folk. That's why the UKSP doesn't fix this.

I thought being a Werewolf was actually not bad, it certainly has far less liabilities than being the Vampire Lord, far easier to manage.

The only serious disadvantages of vampirism (with DG installed) are a 50% weakness to fire (which you can counter with resist fire equipment) and a weakness to sunlight (which can be countered by waiting for the sun to go down). Without DG installed you can't speak to anyone without being attacked, which makes it basically useless. With DG installed its an overall buff.

Warning: the following includes a rant about the USKP team induced by my inability to access the Skyrim Nexus due to the server being overloaded. I apologize if you feel offended.

USKP team logic: Necromage-powered player vampire is a glitch, Serana nerfing your VL form is normal.

...no offense to the USKP team.

why the need to turn into a ugly very cartoonish looking character , beats me why they did it

with the right mod ( i use the better vampire mod) and plenty of time imy character is more powerfull after time than what that vampire lord will ever be

and with a mod you can make it as difficulty or easy as you want

by example better vampire mod setting i am using

sunlight damages you

healing potions and spells do not work only bloodpotions and necromanct

no corp feeding

like i said with some carefull planning and dedication you will rise rapidly and have much more fun than turning yourself into a vamire lord and mindlessly zapping npc with your ' deadray'
