youbetterwork
For example, if you have the high ground, enemies (even animals) know that bows (and spells) have range and run away until you equip a melee weapon. How does the AI detect this and can I mod this?
IsharaMeradin
I don't think they are detecting what weapon you are using. Rather, their AI determines if there is a navmeshed route to your location. If there is a route in the loaded area that they can take, they will take it even if that requires them to go out of sight. If they cannot find such a route, then they will hide because there is no way that they can fight back. Unless they have ranged weapons themselves, in which case they may fight back or take shots as they can while trying to hide.
youbetterwork
I made a quick video to illustrate. https://imgur.com/Ep3f4gM You can see the bear does back away a little when I hit it with melee from high ground, but runs away completely when I draw the bow. IsharaMeradin
Still navmesh related. When you're using melee and able to hit them, they'll think they might have a chance at fighting back. In the video you can see the bear testing whether it can reach you or not. Once it realized that you had a longer reach, it backed up out of range and tried to threaten you away. Once you switched weapons, you have a greater reach so it ran out of sight. That isn't to say that there isn't a check made for the weapon type. Just saying that what you are seeing is the result of how the navmesh is laid out. Find a location where you have the high ground and a follower follows you there without getting stuck. You should notice that when you attack an enemy from above, they'll run up to your location regardless of what type of weapon you may have equipped. A good example is in the cave during the Lights Out quest. One can use a bow to take out enemies near the "boss" from a higher area. Because that area is navmeshed the remaining enemies will start running up the slope to attack the player.
youbetterwork
Thanks for the info! I guess you can't mod that short of changing the navmesh of the entire worldspace.
