Hugely disappointed with an IPS-panel monitor, playing at night and with a dark(er) nights mod is basically impossible

Recommended Posts

So I got me something that's quite a good monitor actually (Asus ROG Strix XG27AQ, 27", IPS panel etc.) thinking that it will be an awesome upgrade from my decade-old monitor that started flickering when warming up (Samsung SyncMaster 226BW, 22", TN panel). I am aware that there are different panels, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but I figured a hi-end year 2021 monitor -- no matter what panel -- will beat a 2010-ish monitor easily. Well, I was horribly wrong. What reviews -- and I did go through lots of them -- mention only shyly and without going into any kind of useful details, is that an IPS monitor is an absolutely UNACCEPTABLE solution if you're playing (1) at night and (2) a game with lots of very dark scenes. Well, that's PRECISELY how I play Fallout games -- at night (or evening, anyway, when there's least light coming from outside) and with one of those "darker nights" mods, both for maximum immersion. So I've installed FONV after a few years, to enjoy a new playthrough on a newly built PC and new monitor, only to discover that when the in-game night comes (using Nevada Skies in this particular case), the panel glow (the so called "IPS glow" and "bleeding") is so strong and distracting that the game is unplayable. I went through absolutely all monitor settings but even with the brightness at 0 % it's still so strong that what's supposed to be a dark corner is a source of ugly grayish backlight. No setting can help that, it seems. This is a great monitor, but if you're using it during the day, with brightness at high levels and for a content that's completely colorful, i.e. with no significant black or dark scenes or object. That's NOT how I can play neither Fallout nor Skyrim.

In short, an IPS monitor + Fallout/Skyrim + any kind of dark nights mod = utter disaster.

I'm still playing with settings but I'm not so optimistic about this. Rant over :-)

I found the opposite, my older asus panel (4k/60Hz/TN) is significantly worse in every way compared to the acer predator (4k/120Hz/GSync/HDR/IPS), so much so that the old one is essentially for web browsing now. The backlight bleed isn't related to an IPS panel but the manufacturer. A good IPS monitor should provide you with very rich blacks and excellent contrast compared to a TN panel, the TN should look washed out when side-by side. You should be able to adjust brightness to your liking though that level of backlight bleeding into the display could be a defect which is what makes it unusable. Another thing worth mentioning is to ensure that your display adapter is outputting full dynamic range + highest color depth. If that doesn't help and it is returnable or under warranty I'd suggest it to try either a new one of the same display or try an alternative display.

if you like panels with a true black as i do, you react sensible on washed out black you will never be happy with ipc or tn lcd panels. especially if you play in darker environment only oled panels can make you happy. black is true black and response times are extremely low. i can warmly recommend them and in my opinion the crispyness and the true black without any back light bleeding it is worth the extra money.

The blacks are definitely better on OLED which do drive great contrast ratios, I'm just not ready to break into the $3000+ market space on a single display to get the 120Hz/GSync/4K/HDR I was looking for though.

In the past I have had some bad experience with older OLED burn in as well though I am sure it has improved to an extent. Are there any OLED monitors which hit 120Hz and aren't in a TV class yet? I don't want to sit a half meter away from a 55" display, though if I replace my secondary display at some point it would be interesting to consider an OLED panel.

gaming with my 120Hz 65" lg oled is quite a nice experience. since my first oled experience with lg c7 i can not switch back to lcd. for me it was worth the 1500e (i payed roughly same for both tv). blue ray movies watching is a much crisper experience with oled than watching with lcd or in cinema. now my children play with the c7 and are more than happy with it. to be honest the c7 has some minor burn in issues after 3 years of intense use. not visible during normal use but watching plain red showed some darker areas. but no dead pixels after frequent use over 3 years or any other issues and the plain gray is still perfect.

an oled monitor for 3000e is definitely not worth the money. seems to me much too expensive. i can recommend the newer lg oled tv and burn in gets better from generation to generation. but in the end oled is organic material so brightness will decrease over time. a problem lcd also suffer from (backlight led). but most annoying for me in the past had been single dead or wrong emitting lcd pixels and the nasty back light bleeding.

I could definitely see a large OLED TV being an excellent experience for any controller style games (Red Dead 2, racing games, etc.), I'll have to keep an eye out. For movies and general games the burn in wouldn't be nearly as bad as a desktop or phone experience either where there are frequent static icons. Though a graphics card will probably be my next upgrade when the market allows for it hahah!

Inventory is loosening up, and prices are coming down, albeit, rather slowly. :) I don't expect things to be back to something resembling "normal" until some time next year though. :D

I sure hope so, it will be interesting with the intel entering the dedicated GPU market and Nvidia possibly entering the consumer CPU market in the more distant future (and AMD doing excellent on both fronts)!

And yesterday I read an article saying the chip shortage was getting worse, not better....... Wish they would make up their minds. :D
