Game Crashes while Loading Savegames, worked fine just yesterday

Hey Everyone,

got myself the Fallout 3 Goty edition during the Steam Summer Sale and after adding some texture Mods and Fellout as well as the unofficial Patch and Fallout Error Corrections i started playing the Game yesterday, i deactivated the autosave options like suggested by different threads since they seem to be buggy and also always created a new savegame instead of overwriting an existing one. I played this way for an hour or two without any problems and was able to reload my game via quickload as well as from the main menu after doing some Fallout.ini tweaking, but when I started the game today to continue, the game suddenly crashed when i tried to load my savegames which were working fine just a few hours ago.

This goes for all the savegames i created, not just the latest one, so my question is, is there a way to fix this ?

The only thing i did differently was that i started the game through steam and not NMM like i did yesterday, but that shouldn't affect my savegames, should it ?

My Config:

Intel Core I7 860@ 3.4 Ghz

8GB Ram

Amd Radeon 5870

Game is installed on a Crucial C300 SSD

Operating System: Win7 x64

Edit:

Btw this is the first time i am modding a Bethesda Game and i don't have a lot of modding experience in general, but i watched the Tutorial video by gopher and read up some info here on Nexus so if you get too technical please explain in detail so i can understand :)

Hi ElRizzo,

please you can post your load order? which change made on fallout.ini? (its very dangerous to make manual chenge on it) what fix you do exatly?

Im sorry but at 99% your save is corrupted and if you use mod you must start by NMM.

Sure can do.

Here is my loadorder, top being the first to load:

Fallout3.esm
Anchorage.esm
ThePitt.esm
StreetLights.esm
BrokenSteel.esm
PointLookout.esm
Zeta.esm
Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch.esm
Fellout-pipboylight.esp
Fellout-Full.esp
Fellout-Anchorage.esp
Fellout-BrokenSteel.esp
Fellout-PointLookout.esp
Fellout-Zeta.esp
Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - ALL DLC.esp
FO3 Error Fixes.esp
Night Vision Sunglasses.esp

As for the .Ini changes, i just changed the value of uGridsToLoad to increase the Distance at which Objects are displayed.

Im sorry but at 99% your save is corrupted and if you use mod you must start by NMM.

I tried it with NMM too and the saves won't load.

ok your load order seems not the problem , my suggest is:

- to make a multicore fix, large address fix and merge patch with fo3edit (you can see how to in the gopher videos: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL77ECC4B6194E1685)

- for the save imo its better to make a new one after make all fix

- for the "uGridsToLoad" value dont exceed 9 otherwise the game can ctd very often

i hope i was helpful

You should not change the values in "uGridsToLoad". If you changed the values after you made a save and exited the game, you cannot use that save. You have to start a new game.

That can't be right, i played around with the value quite a lot from 15, which caused my fps to go down below 5 fps , to 7 which i currently use and i exited the game every time i changed it and loaded the last save without any problems. Besides, this value can be changed by the ingame graphics settings as well so it would be quite bad if that would corrupt your savegames right ?

@ nino791

Sorry that i didn't mention it, but i already made my Fallout3.exe large adress aware  and the multicore fix is also already in use  but thx for your quick answers and of course you are helpful !

The game engine cannot run with a uGridsToLoad value of 15, if the correct .ini was changed. You cannot make a save game, exit the game, and lower the uGridsToLoad and use that save game, ever. You cannot change the value of uGridsToLoad with the in game settings. If you could, why would you need to change the .ini?

Please see this: http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_9.html It was made by someone with more knowledge than I.

Because the maximum Setting with regular ingame Settings is 5 which you can exceed by changing the setting directly in the .ini file as stated in the Link you posted  and to proof the fact that you can actually start the game with a value of 15 or even more click this link and open the image gallery near the bottom (don't know if you speak German) they compare the maximum ingame setting of 5 with a value of 19.

I swear to you, i did and it worked just fine ... the drop in performance was very noticeable and i changed the correct ini since it was also a strong visible difference between 5 and 15 which you can also see in the screenshots of the link i posted.

But your link gave me an idea, i will change the value back to what it was before and see if that may work.

Edit:

I don't believe it ! It worked :D :D i changed the value back to 9 (previously 7) and my savegames are working again  ! THX so much for your link M48A5 and also nino791 for your help !

And if anyone stumbles upon this thread and doesn't know how to revert his value back to normal (or just lower than the value at the time of saving the game) THIS will help you as it helped me to now play the game at my desired settings.

As stated above, you cannot load a save with uGrids set to a lower value than it was set when the save was made. If you made the mistake of saving a game with a higher value than 5, do the following:

1. Change uGridsToLoad to the setting used by your save.

2. While in-game, change the value in the INI back to 5 and save it.

3. Open the in-game console and enter "RefreshINI"

4. Save your game.

No tweaking guide from a knowledgeable source will ever advise you to change the value of uGridsToLoad. It's set at 5 for stability rather than for performance. The Gamebryo engine is far from bulletproof, and some things are better left alone.
