ruvuk
Whoa. Sounds unreal. I'd rant, too. I've been thinking about what you wrote and comparing it to my own experiences with the game. Sometimes I get so burnt out when working on the stuff-to-fix list that I think maybe I should just find a new game. I've even spent a little time looking at what's out there. I've not given up on the game, but, then, I've never had anywhere near the problems you're talking about. Every few days or maybe once a week I get a crash to the desktop. I also get a few freezes where the only option is to shut down my machine and restart everything, but those are rare. I'm not a tech guy, and I really don't have a good sense of why Skyrim is so vulnerable to bugs. When working on mods of my own, I've been surprised by how easily the game will crash when I ask it to do something illogical or leave something out. My only guess is that some of this vulnerability is the tradeoff required for the Creation Kit. I'm curious about one thing, but maybe it was just too basic to even mention. Have you tried starting the game over from scratch? You know playing real vanilla for 20 minutes and then adding your mods in 2 or 3 at a time? The real problem with doing that is the clean reinstall. There are a LOT of ways you can miss scraps of old code when trying to clean out a game. Even using the Revo Uninstaller at it's most aggressive settings, I still find that I have some code litter left behind. My point is just that it's easy to think you're doing a clean new install when you're not. (I think this is courtesy of Microsoft's policy of settling for poor-quality algorithms in the belief that ever-more-powerful hardware would overcome the weak and/or unstable code. I say this because Bill Gates used to say it when speaking.) Thinking back over my evening, I can remember maybe 8 things that went wrong with the game. All of them were minor. But I was old friends with most of them, so they didn't bother me; I hardly noticed them at the time. The 2 new problems bugged me for sure, probably because I didn't know how serious they might be. I *think* both are going to be OK, which means that they won't occur very often and that I'll know not to worry about them when they do occur. Crazy game we play. Good luck. And I'll make a point to kill a few extra Thalmor to cover for you. :o) Edited July 26, 2013 by ruvuk
aviform
Have you tried uninstalling the High-res texture packs and testing skyrim then? That, more than anything else, could be the big problem.
ArtMurder
This entire site is devoted to helping you with all the problems you described, so I am sure if you just calm down and step back you can solve it in no time! ^_^ Skyrim crashes can be hard to iron out. For one, if you are using a save file that had mods installed, but have sense uninstalled them, the odds of crashing goes WAY up. To get the best skyrim install, something very very sturdy, look into ALL the mods you want before ever downloading them. Check the description for compatibility, make sure all the mods you work together don't conflict. A personal tip, manually install mods, while more complicated and harder to uninstall, you can be more certain the mod is being installed right. This also allows you to use "Skyrim Install Swapper" which allows you to very easily swap between multiple mod load outs and create a 'vanilla' skyrim setting from a heavily modded one, without losing the heavily modded one! This allows you to try out mods better, try installing them just a few at a time on a copy of the vanilla skyrim install on a test character, and slowly add more and more mods, until you are happy with the result. Then, once you are 100% sure you are happy with the mods, the game runs smooth, and you are NOT going to add or remove any mods, make an entirely new character, and use THAT character to play the game with. Download BOSS, and Boss Userlist Manager. Also, TES5Edit. These programs are great. First run BOSS, and if it does not recognize any mods, use BUM to place them near similar mods (if it's an armor mod, add a rule for it to load after another armor mod you have) Just NEVER let it bundle the unknown mods at the bottom, this can cause problems for a lot of mods that HAVE to be at the very bottom of the load order! If you really have that much trouble, just to a fresh install, and stick to about 20 mods you like best. The less mods you have the more stable. That also makes it much easier to work out conflicts! I have about 200 mods installed myself, and I get CTDs once every hour or two from the memory issue, skyrim is just a wonky game sometimes and going hours without a CTD is kind of lucky even in the vanilla game. Especially if your character is past 100 hours play time. I manage to keep my load order semi-stable through trial and error. I use the papyrus log and help from users here to figure out what's causing CTDs, and managed to remove over 95% of my mod related CTDs!
mindw0rk2
Dude, no kidding. Im trying my ass out to find what causes crash near rock right out the exit from Riverwood (on the way to Standing Stones), and it feels like game is trolling me. No matter what I do and turn off, it always comes back even if at first looks stable. This particular place gives me nightmares. aviform
In addition to the highres texture packs, it looks like you have a tooon of cleaning to do on Update, Dragonborn, Dawnguard and Hearthfire. If you've been cleaning those with TES5edit, you haven't been doing it right. But when I cleaned mine I didn't notice any particular change in performance, so first I'd disable the highres texture packs and then test. As for the rock, if there are any mods that edit or add any place around Riverwood, that would do it.

RS13
As I keep saying, I've tried EVERYTHING. I'm using freshly modded saves. I've uninstalled and reinstalled AT LEAST three times. Obviously, I use BOSS--that's where the list comes from--and I cleaned the files the last time crashes force me to uninstall-reinstall. I got the same problems then. The High-Res packs aren't even active, so how that's supposed to be the problem is beyond me. This isn't me getting frustrated and giving up the first time I've run into problems. I've been at this ALL SUMMER. Don't you think I've tried the basics already? Edited July 26, 2013 by RS13
Shadeybladey
I'd get rid of Convenient Horses. I don't use any horse mods now, they aren't needed, NPCs cannot fight on horseback and I was getting lots of crashes. Also, you should start a new game after making any major changes to your mod list. And post your system specs. Also, what size are your save files? RS13
Let me be very clear. I'm NOT yanking mods out of my load-order mid game. Got it? That's not the issue. I'm getting these problems without ever loading a "relies on missing content" save. I'm getting crashes on characters that I created to do NOTHING but test mods out on. I have added mods to pre-existing saves, but considering that these problems always show up several hours down the line from my last install, if I have to start over everytime, I'm just not going to be able to test a load order at all. What if the problems show up 20 hours into a playthrough (as they have previously)? I can't yank them all and I can't roll back to stable config, since my current config WAS stable for 19+ hours. If it takes 20 hours to test every config, It'll take years to get truly stable. Edited July 26, 2013 by RS13
