Dinin
Wow, Valdir is right. You are basing your whole opinion on a few quotes. Even though they have said the game would be "smaller" with "minigames" and with "fewer quests" you're automatically making the worst case scenario for these things. You say it's gonna be hack-n-slash, what the hell do you know? They just said they were greatly improving the combat system! You're expecting smaller as in only a 50 hour game, when smaller could mean only 20 hours less game play, and in Morrowind, that would still add up to about 180 hours. Why can't you people just wait for more information. Those of you that have said they wouldn't even buy the game, i hope you go through with that, because the way you're acting you dont' even deserve to play the next addition of TES. NCBeachBum
I'm basing it upon the numbers they gave in the article, Dinin.... only 6 joinable factions/guilds? Only 1000 NPC's? That's just too damned small to expect any length anywhere, including side quests.
Dinin
Do you have any idea how long the average side quest will be?Is it so hard to wait before jumping to a conclusion? It has been made clear to these forums that Game Informer will have an exclusive look at TESIV in their next issue. Why not wait and see what GI has uncovered before assuming the worst? Let me repeat a famous saying : When you assume you make an ass out of u and me. ;)
NCBeachBum
Well, I think perhaps you and I look at 'length' differently. I don't look at it in the term of hours. I look at it in terms of replayability, roleplayability, and the depth of the game. With more factions/guilds, you can roleplay so many different types of characters, making it able to play the game over and over. Unmodded, unexpanded Morrowind had over 2500 NPC's and 13 joinable factions/guilds. Oblivion will have 1000 NPC's, 6 joinable factions/quests (one of which is called the Arena guild.... if it is what I think it is, and in this case I am just speculating, it'll just add to hack n' slash), and a shorter MQ. That's an absolutely huge dropoff. Morrowind was a big dropoff from DF in those terms, but everything they added in other areas (i.e. more believable and unique NPC's, etc) made in an incredible game. I just cannot believe that they can manage to add enough quality content to offset cutting the number of factions/guilds by 54% and the number of NPC's by more than 60%. Dinin
Alright, i kinda see where you're coming from here. But i dont know, they say the graphics are jaw dropping (individual blades of grass). Personally, i wouldn't mind if they sacrificed some of the replay value for top-quality graphics. They could use TESIV to set their new standard of the eldar scroll series, then use TESV to make a game thats similar to Morrowind in replay value but with all the previous advantages of TESIV. Still, I need to take my own advice and wait.
NCBeachBum
Well, don't take me wrong, I'm not completely on the doom and gloom side of things either. I'm trying to wait and see, and hope that Bethesda isn't going to totally sell out to 'mainstream' console gamepad type play. But from what was in that article, I'm really afraid that is exactly what is happening, and I'm not one to keep my mouth shut and not voice my concerns. If I'm wrong, I'll just admit it and be damned glad I was. :D Another thing I haven't really been able to wrap my mind around: combat will now be based on the player's skill level at playing, with button combos and such, as opposed to the PC character's skill level in battle. Mundane things like lockpicking and armor repair will now be based on the player's skill level in mini games, rather than the PC's skill level at those skills. So exactly what will be the point in raising skills? Will you start a new character after beating the game, and because you can now play the game, your new level 1 character will now be able to do everything just as well as your old level 40 character? Dinin
I'm guessing the combat system will be a little like the LOTR action games. Before you say that means the combat in TESIV will be hack-n-slash, remember that the people at Beth. said that blocking will be an important part in the combat (it really wasn't in the LOTR games). I think the main similarity between the two games will be that you will increase in skill by gaining new combos and added strength/speed to your attack, which doesn't really sound bad to me. eviljim
i sat down and played Outlaw Golf Last night. it's pretty fun. ^_^ believe it or not that was an on topic statement.... In hot shots you're skill with swinging the golf club is what wins you the game but if your character is frustrated you have to be more accurate with the controller. if your character is calm and 'in the zone' you can be less accurate with your movements and it will still count them as mostly dead on. i'm thinking it may be a similar setup for the 'minigames' and combat. your skill with a keyboard and mouse will be critical but as your character levels up you won't have to be quite as detailed/exact to get those high level locks or hit the good combos... just an idea though B)
pharzon
more shoot'em-like to please the average gamer Where'd you come up with this? Did you see this: "Probably - and of course I don't know this for sure"?What I wrote was my interpretation of the information we have, where they specifically say that Oblivion is going to more action-orientated. Thus why I wrote it.And Valdir, if you don't want to discuss this issue then just don't instead of just writing nonsense like "You guys are pretty lame.". This is a forum and thus we can discuss anything we like whether you agree or not. And remember that this discussion is based on the information that is avaliable at the moment - we don't know who's right or who's wrong. But we can all interpret things like we want, and that's what this thread is for. We can, of course, all just wait for the game, but that kind of renders the whole point of a discussion superfluous. Oh yeah, and Dinin, you say that "They just said they were greatly improving the combat system!". Have you even read what they were saying? Obviously you have not. They said that they would improve the combat system, correct, but they also said that the game would be more combat orientated. And you say that those who are questioning Bethesda regarding some of their statements don't deserve the game? Oh yeah, if you have a concern just shup up, because else you don't deserve the game. Makes much sense to me. pharzon..
Slaiv
It has been made clear to these forums that Game Informer will have an exclusive look at TESIV in their next issue. Why not wait and see what GI has uncovere\d before assuming the worst? We have. You most likely haven't read what's on the first page. All of that information came from the GI article. But i dont know, they say the graphics are jaw dropping (individual blades of grass). Personally, i wouldn't mind if they sacrificed some of the replay value for top-quality graphics. Graphics don't matter. It's the gameplay that counts. Peasant's Quest is one of the funnest games I've played recently. Warcraft III - not too-good graphics. One of the best strategy games of all time, up there with Starcraft. Final Fantasy V and VI - awesome. For the SNES. The best MMORPG available right now just happens to be free, and has terrible graphics: Runescape. Morrowind is awesome - graphics aren't that impressive. Good, but not impressive. They could use TESIV to set their new standard of the eldar scroll series, then use TESV to make a game thats similar to Morrowind in replay value but with all the previous advantages of TESIV. Yeah, if you want to wait 10 more years. I'm guessing the combat system will be a little like the LOTR action games. Before you say that means the combat in TESIV will be hack-n-slash, remember that the people at Beth. said that blocking will be an important part in the combat (it really wasn't in the LOTR games). Blocking or no, it's still hack and slash. You can block in Dungeons & Dragons Heroes, as well as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Those are hack and slash. I think the main similarity between the two games will be that you will increase in skill by gaining new combos and added strength/speed to your attack, which doesn't really sound bad to me. That right there jsut contradicted yourself - that's what happens in hack and slash games. Don't get me wrong - I really, really hope that I am wrong about all this, but as of now, it doesn't seem so. If Bethsoft basically drops the skill-points system, you undoubtedly can count on me opting not to buy it. ;)
