Need help with eyes

Recommended Posts

I'm sure I have done this successfully before but just won't work for me now - I want to make glowing eyes but only a part of it, either the iris or pupil but I can't get out of the whole thing being lit up for some reason:

This is part of a hi-res eyes pack i'm working on and would like to add different glowing variants of some designs, but might not bother with them unless I can sort this out.

Here's what I did;

  1. Made the texture, then the glow map - bright iris, everything else black
  2. Made the CK texture set (tried putting the _g in the 4th slot, then the 3rd)Set
  3. Made the usable eyes under 'Head Parts'

After I realised this wasn't working I tried playing around with eyesmale.nif in nifskope;

  • Set glow shader type
  • Checked glow map under shader flags 2
  • Adjusted the emmisive colour and strength to get a decent glow
  • Added the glow map to the texture set (again tried the 4th slot first, then 3rd) as well as the diffuse

Still the whole eye glows instead the area I want, could someone tell me where I went wrong?

Also you might have noticed the corner of the eye (the fleshy bit) cuts off near the top, looking at it in nifskope I can see that it's part of the eye texture's alpha property overlapping this bit for for some reason it's cutting it off...I saved the texture in dxt3 (edit: tried dxt5 too) which is how the vanilla map is done so can't that being the cause.

If you have saved the file as DXT3, then resaved as DXT5, the compression damage is already done. You will need to add back in any lost detail in the alpha channel. Usually, the difference between 3 and 5 is fairly neglegible (similar to a gif compared to bmp), but it is still there.

This isn't going to cause the issue you are having though. Sadly, I ran into the same thing and spent several days messing about with it before deleting my efforts. The glow shaders just seem to flip out on eyes. :(

Oh god no I didn't compress a dxt3 to dxt5 that would look terrible! :laugh: I learnt that back in NV when I noticed big horrible green blocks on dark textures and now I save my textures as Gimp xcf files to avoid quality loss.

There must be a way to do it though, Dawnguard has cool glowing vamp eyes (black and orange/yellow) which seems to isolate the glow just to the coloured parts BUT sadly I don't actually have DG and can't replicate how it's done. :sad:
