If a company is going to use something as sensitive as the Eastern Front they should make an effort to get it right, they certainly shouldn't be taking liberties with the truth just to add a little drama to an event that left millions dead. The west does have a problem with certain groups, all German soldiers are portrayed as blood thirsty Nazis, Russians are portrayed as lunatics with no regard for human life (not even their own) and the less said about the way Arabs are portrayed the better. Developers shouldn't expect those they continually insult to keep quiet and they certainly shouldn't expect them to buy their products.

Yes, but you're forgetting something. WWII is pretty much just FPS porn these days. They don't care about history, they just care about the fact that it's one of the few scenarios where you can have a game where you can kill tons and tones of enemy soldiers without having to put those soldiers in a zombie (or alien) suit to avoid people throwing a fit over the whole idea of one person killing another inside a virtual world. You can't do it with "terrorists" any more because of defamation, so if you take away the universal Nazi strawman, there really won't be anyone else left that game companies can kill by the boatload except for zombies, aliens, or other fantasy antagonists. Blame humanity for not yet having a group who was afraid to say "Yeah, we're evil, we don't care, what are you gonna do about it?" without lawyering up or trying to make like none of it happened later.

I just feel that this whole thing was unnecessary. Russian history is misrepresented in a videogame and suddenly thousands of russians are up in arms and having incredibly vocal protests about it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/russia-anti-gay-laws'>Russia passes anti-gay laws that actively trample all over human rights, but you barely hear a word out of the russian citizens about it.

Is the second thing not a much better incident to be vocal about? It's an issue currently affecting your country and placing you in a bad light. I'd think that if I were to kick up a ruckus about something on the internet, I'd much rather kick up a fuss about the government trampling on homosexual rights than a videogame company misrepresenting historical facts.

And down here in South Africa we are often portrayed as uncivilized barbarians. While I was in Europe I'd often get treated with suspicion and disdain when people found out I was South African. In the rest of the world americans are often portrayed as ignorant buffoons.

Groups and nations are often portrayed in a bad light. We shouldn't necessarily accept this, but we shouldn't have giant hissy-fits about it either.

You know you’re living in the Twilight Zone when Russia is no longer the biggest lunatic at the table. America/UK is a parody of a parody. It's a living sitcom and tragedy combined.

People underestimate the effect that the fortunes of history can have on a people. Russia is far from perfect, but the way they are rejecting modern degenerate nihilistic movements for traditional and conservative values, while Anglo nations flush their cultures and heritage down the toilet, is worthy of praise. The fact that Russians are able to see the impending descent of the West into mediocrity, and are resorting to the kind of thinking and action our ancestors 200 years ago would have resorted to, speaks volumes to our decline as much as it does their own advancement.

It was a little more than just portraying them in a bad light, what they done was beyond offensive when you consider how many died in that conflict, I think they have every right to be annoyed with Relic.

Don't tar everyone with the same brush, it makes you as a bad as them.

I can understand both sides of the argument.

Frankly if I had a chance to completely remove the utter insult the film U-571 is to British war history, I would.

Oh, and Pearl Harbour. Obviously not for the British reason.

Same...

I just saw U-571 for the first time. I think I developed a twitch trying to cope with America's blatantly untrue rewrite of history. (And I'm American)

Annoyed, maybe. But don't you think their outrage is a bit over the top? Especially considering contemporary issues such as human rights being trampled by their own government does not seem to inspire the same amount of outrage in the russians?

No it's not over the top, it's an event in their history that left over ten million of them dead, those dead deserve respect and Relic dumped on them.

But is there some contradiction here to pretty much ever other war game? can you tell me an even remotely historically accurate WW2 game? I've never seen one I'd even say was even remotely factual beyond dates and names, and definitely not the narrative driven FPS ones.

And yet peoples' human rights are being dumped on by their own government right this very moment, but the one issue that gets the biggest response is that a videogame company misrepresented some historical facts.
